My guess is that he missed a shift, overrev'd the engine. I'm going to assume that the flywheel was a stock piece that was excessively lightened instead of an actual lightweight flywheel.

lightweight flywheels aren't that much money are they? why go to the trouble of lightening one when you cn put a new one in? Prob did miss a shift though.

Damn, that would definitely get my attention. I have to admit I'm not very knowledgeable about clutches and flywheels, but that looks like a cast iron piece. Aren't most high performance flywheels steel? I would think that would be the best way to prevent something like that from happening. And a scattershield is definitely a must have on a car like that.

That's not cast iron.

Gotta love it when clutches blow up. Have a friend who's Mustang likes to do that it just shoots the pieces out the side so if you next to the car look out.

yikes! I think there have been cases where drag racer's legs have been seriously injured/partially amputated by shattering clutch/flywheel assemblies ...which is why they mandate scattershields in many classes.

I have a lightweight flywheel in my Supra, it's aluminum except for the ring gear. Fortunately, it has not blown up yet.

That's what caused Don Garlits to develop the first successful mid engine top fuel dragsters. He lost half a foot, several pieces of the flywheel/clutch are on display in his museum.

Yesterday I broke through the constraints of Hollywood As I enter the PA Turnpike on the way home from work, I look up the highway at approaching traffic and if it's wide open, I hammer it to the floor and usually let up as I pass under the first overpass since it happens to be almost exactly a 1/4 mile ...though it is from a fast rolling start. Yesterday I just stayed in it for several additional seconds until I got closer to traffic ahead of me ...didn't want to approach other cars going over 150. But I did not miss any shifts nor splatter parts all over the highway.

Also remember Skylines rev to 8000-9000 RPM most of the time. I never rev my car over 6200.

I try to hit my 8000 RPM redline at least once a day. On-ramps FTW!

I don't think anybody makes a scattershield for those, aren't the bellhousing and tranny case one piece? All you could do is make a steel plate surrounding it... better yet get a good flywheel that won't come apart. That does look like a cast one.
