Corvette ZR1 Unleashed!

How many of you love the Corvette? How many of you love comparing its numbers to the exotics? Ever since I was little the Vette has always been my favorite sports car. While the C4 never did anything for me I absolutely loved the C3 stingray and the C5, when the whole concept of the Z06 came out I almost shit my pants. I have dreamed of owning one my whole life and some day hope to. Now, check out this bad boy!

Quote:
After years of speculation, spy photos, and rumors, General Motors has finally revealed its 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, which will be on display at the Detroit auto show in January. As expected, the ZR1 is the most powerful and most expensive Corvette model ever.

An all-new LS9 motor produces 620 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 595 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. Delivering 100 horsepower per liter, the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 is mated to a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox with a new high-capacity clutch designed for the increased power. The twin-disc 260mm design provides plenty of clamping power, while maintaining a relatively easy clutch action.

GM has not disclosed specific performance numbers, but the company admits a top speed of 200 mph is very likely. In terms of acceleration, the ZR1 will most definitely beat its Z06 counterpart, thanks to a 115-horsepower output advantage. Since the Z06 rockets to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, it's a safe bet the ZR1 will be much closer to the 3.0 mark. Final numbers will be announced in March 2008.

"It all boils down to the power-to-weight ratio and the ZR1’s is exceptional," said Chevy's Ed Peper. "Better than the Porsche 911 GT2, the Ferrari 599 and even the Lamborghini LP640. In fact, the ZR1 is expected to be the first production Corvette to achieve a top speed of at least 200 mph."

GM used the Z06 chassis as a starting point, but further tuned the front and rear independent suspension to work with the ZR1's ultra-wide tires for increased grip. According to GM, the car achieves 1g cornering grip.

Exotic looks, exotic materials

The use of carbon fiber is pretty extensive throughout the ZR1. The wider fenders are made of the material, as are the hood, roof panel, roof bow, front fascia splitter and rocker moldings.

The roof and front fascia splitter have a raw carbon fiber appearance with a protective clear coat. The hood is painted like the rest of the car, but the underside is exposed carbon-fiber-weave for increased novelty.

Another standout feature of the hood is a clear polycarbonate "window" that provides a view of the top of the engine’s intercooler, with embossed "LS9 Supercharged" lettering.

Brakes, tires, and wheels

The ZR1 has the largest wheels ever of any production Corvette — not just in diameter, but in width also. The rims measure 20 inches in rear diameter and 19 inches up front. Rear width is a whopping 12 inches, while the front wheels are nearly as massive at 10 inches of width.

In terms of wheel finish, a bright silver paint coat is standard and a chrome version is optional.

The matching Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires measure P285/30ZR19 in front and P335/25ZR20 in the rear. While Michelin's PS2 tires are offered on many vehicles, these were engineered specifically for the ZR1, GM says.

The car's braking system features carbon-ceramic rotors measuring 15.5 inches up front and 15 inches at the rear. GM says the rotors are so durable they should not requiring replacement for the life of the vehicle.

Squeezing the dics are six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers, painted in ZR1-exclusive blue.

Adjustable suspension

The ZR1 comes with GM's Magnetic Selective Ride Control (MSRC) suspension system. The MSRC shocks are automatically adjusted based on driving conditions and vehicle dynamics (cornering, braking, etc) for optimal handling. The system is adjusted every milisecond to provide sharp handling during spirited driving, and a smooth ride while cruising.

While the ZR1 is overall a more aggressive sports car than the Z06, it is actually less harsh over bumps, thanks to the MSRC technology. “The damping control of MSRC allowed for front and rear springs that have a slightly lower rate than the Z06, which enhances the car’s ride quality,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer.

Optional premium interior features

There is very little optional equipment on the ZR1. Aside from the aforementioned chrome wheels, the only other optional equipment is a premium interior package. The kit includes power-adjustable leather-trimmed sport seats, leather-wrapped interior elements (including the dashboard), a navigation system, and Bluetooth connectivity. The interior leather treatments are available in four colors.

http://www.leftlanenews.com/chevrolet-corvette-zr1.html

I can't wait to get the official numbers on this thing. From what they are saying it has a better weight to power ratio than some Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. I bet you this package is gonna come in at $120,000 or less. For a car that will destroy $200,000 cars and IMO looks 10x nicer this is a pretty sweet deal. The only problem I have with it is the chosen name, I think ZR1 sounds a little weak and generic.

What do you all think of corvettes, and most notably the ZR1

Yea, I put this car as costing slightly more than the Viper. And the current Z06 beats the Viper. And the ZR1 is supposed to mop the floor with the Z06... low 3's for the 0-60 time. DAMN!!!

This is awesome.

Now I'm even more anxious to see how the new 2008 Nissan GT-R is going to perform in "real life"

This is the main deal: This Corvette ZR1 is probably going to cost much, much more than the Z06. But, look at what $66,500 (base model) can get you from Nissan:

* Top speed: (193 mph)
* Acceleration: (0-62 mph) in 3.3 seconds
* Standing 1/4-mile: 11.6 s at (118 mph)

These figures have been confirmed by Edmunds.com, and they say the 0-62 MPH may be quicker in better road conditions.......

For $66,500.

I'm a huuuuge fan of domestic cars, but jesus, watch out guys - Nissan might have a real winner here!!!!!!

If you think you're only going to pay MSRP for a GT-R you're dead wrong (MARKUP).

Looks like GM is finally using something other than Tupperware for their interiors.

that new Vette is going to be a beast. i may take a trip to the local Chevy dealer just to get a look at one. it'd be my best chance to actually see one. around here, one of those would be parked in a garage for about 10 months of the year.

I really like it, although there's a good chance that it will not only be the first vette to 200 mph, but also to $100,000 sticker price. Still a quarter or half of what most of those exotics are.
Redjake, as others have mentioned, that Nissan will be close to the vette's price when it is all said and done, although it is a great car.

Sort of like the ZO6 bringing back my memories of the original ZO6 of 1963, the ZR1 name to me conjures up the last ZR1 that Chevy developed back in the early '90s which I really liked and coveted back then ...so I'm ready to covet all over again, but this time even way more.

I didn't see it in any link above but did you see it on a racetrack ...fast as all hell!

Yes I have been reading about the GT-R as well. That car is going to be a beast! But nothing will take me from my love of Corvettes

The thing that I love most about Vettes is the fact that I have a realistic chance of owning one in my life, now I doubt I would ever be able to afford the ZR1 but a Z06 would probably be feasible for me sometime in the near future... that is unless I get married and have kids. So its either a wife and kids or a vette! haha.

And I think that nice interior package started being offered on the Corvette either last year or the year before. You can bet your ass I would be getting that option. Makes the interior look amazing.

Even though it's more powerful than previous models and has a ZR1 after it's name it's still a Corvette. Not much different from others that I see everyday. If I wanted to get looks, I'd spend $100 grand elsewhere, such as Aston Martin Vantage or a used Gallardo.

Having driven a Z06 a couple of times, I can't imagine what this car will be like. Its nearly impossible to use the Z06 to its fullest. I like that the Z06 doesn't look all the different than a stock Vette. The ZR1 kind of strikes me a little over the top (for a Vette) however I'm sure I'd get used to it. Especially if it were in my garage.

Its really great to see an American manu bring out a high performance supercar.

Not just the average non-car type person at all, I consider myself to be a car fanatic and personally this is just a Vette with a bigger sticker price that won't make people turn their heads anymore than a Z06 did. People who are used to a little passion with the marque see these as just another Vette, Ferrari, Lambo, Masseratti, Porsche, Chevy? One of those manufacturer names just looks silly there, regardless of how many class wins they get at Le Mans.

I agree LoganSnake, 100K would be far better spent on an Aston and people would actually turn their heads when you drive by.

Well as far as I see, there's a difference between head-turning and pin-your-head-to-the-headrest. If I wanted to turn heads, I'd get an old Countach, or for far, far les money, a shelby cobra kit car (that by-the-way also can have super performance). It is interesting that people are examining what "car-people's" reactions versus non "car-people"s" reactions are. While some of the marques such as Lambo, and Ferrari still make bona fide exotics and have the names to go with it makers like Maserati and Aston make good looking cars that don't really set themselves apart all that much (IMHO). Some of the Astons look like Jaguars (which are very nice, but somewhat less exotic) and the Maseratis are sort of, almost boring. I pulled in opposite one in a parking lot a week or two ago and it actually took me a while to figure out what the hell it even was. Going back to my original point, I think that the new vette will be a driver's car, and other drivers will envy the driver, but regular people will just shrug and not appreciate it above a regular vette.

So people who don't appreciate this car are now 'average non car type person' or just 'regular people'? Who knew all these years I thought I was a car guy and come to find out I have to appreciate this Vette to be one, oh well, juts call me a non car type then, or just a regular person

Yes there is, quite a few cars can accomplish both, this may have the pin your head to the headrest portion, but it won't be turning heads, at least not mine. Then again though I'm an 'average non car type' or just regular people as some like to call us.

Cool is in the eye of the beholder, which is why some people seem to think this Vette is cool. Finding this Vette uncool or not as great as the majority doesn't make anyone an average non-car type person , or a regular person who knows nothing about Vettes or this particular model. Just means they have different taste, but no surprises here really, if someone is against the majority here they must be an average non car type person.

Jesus, somebody needs to switch to decaf! the implication was that to some people cars are cars, which is the reason why we have 2WD SUVs, and 4 cyl Mustangs. Some people dig performance, and some just want a pretty name. It's all subjective anyway. Would it make you happier if I had said SOME drivers would envy the driver of the ZR1 because they knew about the car's capabilities?

Switch to decalf? I always enjoy how people say that here, like they're talking to someone who's pissed or excited about a post, when they really have no idea the emotions or lack there of behind someones post. I'll just leave the thread, and next time before assuming that someone is angry or excited when they post make sure.

I never said you shouldn't stick by thinking Jags and Aston's look the same I merely said 'are you serious'? I have no issue telling them apart, but I guess some do, to each his own, much like this Vette, you like it, I don't, to each his own.

Well I know lots of people don't like vettes, but I sure as hell do. I would rather look and drool over a corvette than a Ferrari. I would take a Vette over a ferrari or a porch or a new lambo any day.

I love the old Countach and the Diablo, but I can't stand the look of the new ones. and the performance on new ones is pretty sub-par for the sticker price.

To each there own I suppose.

Well I'd take a new Vette over a porch as well, only things to do on a porch are sit and drink, maybe smoke some weed. haha, I know, I know, Porsche.

I like Vettes don't get me wrong, I'm just more of a classic Vette fan than the new Vettes. Drooling over a Vette is something I'd never do, unless women were performing unspeakable acts on each other on the hood, then the drool would flow.

Yep to each their own, I'm just making people try and see that just because someone doesn't like this Vette doesn't mean that they are average people who think cars are cars, or an average non car type person, we just have different tastes, different cars get us going, the Ascari makes me nurse a semi everytime I see it, as does the GT-R:

You think these cars look alike? First is the Aston:

Jag:

Oh well, to each his own, once again, and not liking this Vette makes us regular people(not that its a bad thing) or average non car type. Oh well, as I said before, I'm done with this nthread, I'll go back to nonsense where people are allowed to have different likes and tastes.

Redjake, as others have mentioned, that Nissan will be close to the vette's price when it is all said and done, although it is a great car.
Actually, the Z06 is QUITE capable of over 200 mph. The factory tuning has it restricted. GM specs of HP v/s windrag, weight, rolling resistance shows that the Z06 would be capable of over 225 mph, but the drivetrain itself was not designed for those speeds. I am looking forward to the new Vette since I get to work of these cars almost every day. Very nice piece of equipment, and I am looking forward to the first one arriving at out dealer.
