How Did You Say Good Bye To Your First Car?
Car was totaled in an accident 6 years ago or so.
It was very traumatic for me. I did EVERYTHING in that car and with that car. At the junkyard, I pulled my license plate (the one that wasnt mangled) and saved it. |

I gave it to someone special who needed it (my new in-laws had just given us an old camaro for a wedding present, and we didn't need/couldn't afford insurance on 3 cars).

After 11 years and almost 200,000 miles I traded my 73 Beetle on a 1981 Escort. Worst decision EVER.
Beetle had no gas gauge(crapped out), no odometer(quit working as well), nothing left to the driver's seat(I sat on a towel draped over the springs) and a layer of ice across the passenger side due to a hole in the rear quarter panel from hitting a jeep and the left tailight hung to its side, held on with duct tape. It was still a better car than the POS I traded it for. |

I beat the hell out of my first car. Once I decided there was nothing left to save I started parting it out because it was worth more that way.
Some guy finally called wanting to buy the whole thing (or what was left rather) and as I was tired of piecing it out I said sure. He said he would come tow it away that evening. When he showed up he was alone and had a tow chain. Anyone who has ever towed a car with a chain knows that this is pretty much a two person job. He made it across the street and my involvement was officially over.

I actually choked up and had a tear in my eye as I handed it over to the next owner. The guy was very understanding and emotional, but also excited at the same time since he was going to own and restore it like it deserved.
My first car was my '67 XKE Jag Roadster that I bought in 1972 two weeks after I got my first job out of college. This was the car I "fell in love with" at first sight when I saw it in 1961 as an impressionable 12yo boy, one of my greatest interests was cars. It was in near perfect condition when I bought it and how it got from near perfect to needing a full restoration is a sad story that still makes me angry at myself for letting others do that to me/my car ...I was too gullible. |

I'll tell the story of my first two cars.
I drove my first off a cliff. Luckily it did not roll, and the frame was folded back a few inches. After topping off the fluids it still ran. I did not think to consider that the radiator was now pressed against the motor. A couple weeks later while driving on a hot day the car burst into flames on me on the highway. My second car had alignment issues, and I would burn through wheel bearings, tie-rod ends and ball-joints way too quickly (spending more money on repairs than I would on a car payment). I parted a few things out, and decided a joy-ride to the junk yard was in order. After jumping the car a few times, and doing doughnuts in a parking lot till all you could see what smoke I dropped it off at the junkyard with 3 of 4 tires hissing out air. My friend driving behind me said it was the first time he has ever seen the undercarriage of a car on a public road. I look back at both of these incidents and only think "wow, I was a fucking idiot".

no problem...I still got it !!!...1959 Borgward Isabella TS...bought it as a senior in high school with 200,000 miles on it(1965) and commuted to college for 4 years in it(52 mile round trip)...rebuilt the engine once when it blew a head gasket and stopped diving it in 1975,it's been stored as a parts car ever since..........xoxoxoo

My first car was transportation. I bought it as something I knew I'd be able to beat the holy hell out of; being rather poor at the time, reliability was a key factor (I didn't want to spend a lot on repairs).
When I finally found myself in a position to get something nicer I sent it off to the scrap heap without hesitation. I actively disliked that thing. Then came the 'retta...

I'm attached to my vehicle but I'm afraid I'll need to get rid of it early next year due to outrageous insurance (newish + youth) and gasoline costs.
Trading in a newer truck for an older sedan sounds a little like rape to me. I don't like rape much at all. |

It was an 87 Cavalier.
I didn't say goodbye. I sold it to a friend. Then I used to money to pay for food in first year University.

I said goodbye with a bang... and a rather heartfelt (ok, screamed) "I cannot fucking afford this!!!". Sigh. It was my first and only accident, in that '88 Ford Festiva.... until last weekend, that is. Double sigh.

Still have it, Yellow 1982 Toyota 4x4. I got it from my parents in 1990 and drove it almost full time until 3 years ago. It still pulls my lawn mowing equipment around in the summer. She's a trooper, about 200,000 miles.

I still have my first car, piece of shit 92 honda accord lx. When the new year comes around I should have enough for a new car. This piece of shit was enough to make me never buy a used car again, even if I have to shell out 10 grand as a down payment.... I'm going to beat the shit out of my car with a couple buddies and get it on tape. Not sure how much use I'll get with the video, I'll post it when I make it. Keep an eye on it in the year 08 to come. love love

Did that the other week.
99 Ranger. Had it from day 1 (sept 1998) to end (Nov 2007). Bought a 2008 Civic EX, took the new keys. Got in the car, looked at my old baby. Then drove off. I suckered that dealership so bad, both on trade and car value. Gotta love it when the cards work in your favor.

I totaled it. I got rear-ended at 50 MPH and the Camaro that hit me went under the bumper and broke the frame of my car. Shifted the axle about 4 inches forward too.
I went to the shop before they took it to the junkyard and took the VW emblem off the rear of the car. |

I still have parts off my first car, too, including some not so easy to find parts. Luckily a friend is restoring his '66 XKE so the parts will have a good new home.
My second car was less traumatic than my first car story above. It was stolen from practically in front of my house but I didn't bother reporting it since I only paid $100 for it and already got 40k miles out of it; a couple weeks later it showed up in the same condition, parked in about the same spot from where it was stolen, so I gave it to my buddy since I already replaced it with a high-dollar $600 '64 Buick LeSabre with a Wildcat V8 ...I liked that 3rd car. |

My first car:
a blue 1986 mazda 323 170,000+ miles broken sunroof no A/C lived in Texas My wife was rear-ended while driving the dog to the vet. The car was totaled. It was worth more totaled than if I had sold it. I went to the lot in which it sat and pulled the license plates. Then, we bought a new mazda. My friend's first car was a Datsun 240z. He sold it at some point. Years later, his girlfriend at the time found his car (the actual car, not just the model), bought it, and gave it to him for his birthday. |

The first car I ever bought was a Mazda MX6. I was getting on the freeway and hit oil... slid my car right into the barrier and totaled it =(
I still have the little metal Mazda keychain from it, though.

Well, I've had a couple of cars that are more or less my firsts--one, a 1989 Volvo 240 named Zippy, taught me an important lesson. My parents signed Zippy over to me in order to sell, because they didn't need Zippy any more. I'd been driving him for a year, and loved him, but since my parents had promised to give me their extra Volvo station wagon (94 940 wagon named Baby, first car I ever drove), I agreed to sell him for them.
We were Zippy's original owners. I didn't really enjoy selling him. We'd had him since I was six. Furthermore, about a month after I sold Zippy, I received an email from the girl I'd sold him to that made it clear she didn't give two hoots about my car. I've regretted selling Zippy ever since. That's why I've decided to drive my Baby until she's ready to go to the junkyard.

What it tells might be wrong, so I'll tell you what I thought, if I may diverge from this being a "first car" story. I bought it in 1974 and the car was a 1961 Plymouth Valiant. It had the famous slant-six motor and push button on the dash Torqueflite transmission. The car had 42,000 miles on it, one owner, owned by my very good friend's dad, who realized that I needed a car then and he had already gotten a new car and felt that he'd had the Valiant for 13 years of reliable good service and it didn't owe him a dime, so he said "give me a hundred bucks for it". That car never hiccuped or missed a beat the whole time I drove it. To the collector car afficianados I'll add that it was a historically significant car since it was the first car ever built in the U.S. with unibody construction ...so this sort of turned into a "first car" story anyway. Forgive me for my temporary insanity going O.T. I think the reason they gave it back was because they found out it belonged to me and were somewhat fearful that I'd find out who took it, and in my mind/inner fantasy world I was an inner city bad ass and my potential revenge was more than they could bear. Either that or they got tired of it. |
