My friends on a motorcycle trip
My friend Ryan set this page up, he's absolutely hilarious.
http://www.half-throttle.com The bikes are pretty nice and that ability to vote on the route makes for some interesting options. At the moment I'm voting for Ryan's route (Mitch just wants to see his GF and Ryan's right, that trip is gorgeous). What do you all think? Another point, would anybody be brave enough to let people choose their trip for them like this? Personally I can't stand driving on the freeway most days because I spend all my time compensating for other people, I think if I was letting somebody choose my whole trip I'd go bonkers the 3rd day in!

That's pretty cool, I love the concept. I voted for Ryan since I didn't see any explanation why Mitch's way has anything going for it other than his GF.
On my way to or home from work, while the highway is usually the fastest way, I often take a back road, and mix them up so I don't take the same way all the time. I just like taking different roads and I know there are many other's who are similar in this regard. My friends even sort of joke about it because even when I'm someplace I've never been, I'll just turn down some unknown road for no particular reason, sometimes it looks interesting and sometimes it's just there. Often this leads to interesting discoveries so I keep doing it. For example, a few years ago I was driving thru the French country-side exploring the Loire River valley and chateaus etc. I was on a rough 1-1/2 lane wide back road thru lush farmlands when I passed a large open barn door and looked in and right into the eyes of an old woman working inside, it sort of stunned me with the beauty and impact of the moment, so a few seconds later I suddenly turned hard left (since it was France) onto a very narrow dirt road that went up and over a hill. A couple miles back on that road I see something strange in the distance on the next hilltop. They were large modern looking "sculptures" in primary colors, so I drove as close as I could before running into fences and locked gates but I got a closer look at all the sculptures there. A few months later at home I open an Architectural Digest and see a photo spread showing that exact same spot and it turned out to be Alexander Calder's home in France, so those where his private sculptures on his farm. |
