propane powered hooptie anyone?
well, since I've been sitting around a lot I've been thinking about this truck to buy, I REALLY like trucks, 4wd trucks are even better, 4wd reg cab short box trucks with v8's and manual transmissions, well, it doesnt get much better than that.
So, where I am in montana has some elevation, and I plan to do as much hunting as I can up in the actual mountains once my back gets fixed, so, obviously carbureted trucks (and most of the good ones are carb'd, why they strayed from twin solid axles is beyond me) dont do so well at altitude, and the fuel efficency makes it hard to justify one as a daily whip. But then I started thiiking about propane conversions, found some stuff about how you can convert to LP gas... anyone know what the mileage is? from what I've read it seems that you lose some mileage by going to LP, but heres the thing, those are in engines with compression ratios designed for pump gas, LP has an octane rating of 110, so are there any experts here that can shed some light into what kind of numbers I am looking at (ballpark) if this was attempted in an engine that needed 110 octane to prevent premature detonation? I know that one of the ways to get more power out of an engine without increasing displacvement is to increase compression ratio... also, I have a hunch that since propane burns so much cleaner, it would extend engine life (no carbon to displace oil supply) anyone have any thoughts? oh yeah, LP has is about $1.4 a gallon around here.
