Getting an interview after you've started a job - Advice please!
I have two jobs. I just got a call for an interview at another place and booked it for Wednesday at 4pm. I'm not even sure I'm going to go because I would have to quit both and likely earn less money. Plus, the lustre of the company that called is... different. Let's say if they were different magazines, I would be at Time, with contract work at National Geographic. This other company would be like Maxim.
It could be fun. There could be lots of scantily clad women. I could get national exposure. It could damage my resume. I could likely never get hired for my dream job. Work into this that I just started both my other positions and have not accrued leave yet. I would have to come up with some kind of cockamamie reason to get a couple hours off. Also, my contract work is what I really like and it seems like there may be a possibility of that becoming full time - though the company is looking for buyers. The price is very high, so that may or may not happen. BTW, these are not magazines, but are a form of media. WWYD? |
I would go to the other interview.
Nothing is ever written in stone, and you won't know the full offer until you are offered it. |
Go to the interview. It is always good to get your name out there and to check out what else is being offered.
You just never know. As for getting the time off, you have an appointment you need to keep. Two hours is very little. You can make it up later. |
Okay, I say go to the interview. There is no harm in finding out other opportunities. In the future, you don't have to put "Maxim" on your resume, you could put "a national publication". That gets you from resume to interview, where you can explain the work that you did face to face.

Also, when you start a job, the last thing you should be doing is looking for another unless this ws just a get me throug things job. If so, unless you were forthright, you just lied to your new employer - not a good way to begin a relationship. That said, it's important to find the right job. Find one and stick with it. |
This was a case where I applied for three jobs all at the same time. I really never thought this place would call because I checked out their EEO report and they don't have a single "off the street" hire.
A new wrinkle, they want to interview me at the same time my new employer is holding its company party. I'm leaning towards just canceling. One of their previous employees who held the same position quit them because she felt the pay was too low for a network spot. |

I would let it go. It's the fantasy...but not your dream, as you stated yourself. If you're "Time", then you're in a good spot already. Missig the company do is a big no-no, especially if you've just started.

I'd still go as well. Just call them and reschedule the interview to another time.
