smoothies

i did a search and didnt see anything along these lines...

i was wondering what yall put in ur smoothies, i put in a couple frozen strawberries, 1/2 milk, a thing of yogart, ice and some protein powder.

i am afraid to just start mixing things cause it may very well suck, so wanted to see what others made and ones that actually taste good.

Good topic. I just got a super-fancy blender as a gift (the kind that would make amputation painless it's so powerful) and am curious what to do with the thing.

Seems to me there are three general approaches to making a smoothie--creamy, bright, and banana.

In creamy smoothies, you use milk/yogurt/soymilk as a base. This makes a thicker, frothier, and more filling product. If you use acidic fruits, you need to use them in moderation.

For the more 'refreshing' type, you use just ice and maybe a little lemon/lime juice to bring out the flavor a bit. Tends to be better for more citric/acidic-type fruits (mangos, oranges, and the like).

Bananas are in a class by themselves, since they seem to give a good consistency, whether or not dairy is added. Smoothies with bananas are thicker and richer than those without. Vanilla extract (just a little bit) and nutmeg are good flavors to add to many smoothies, but particularly good for banana ones.

Besides the typical fruits you can add, you might consider:

nuts (almonds, walnut), peanut butter
coconut milk/flake
chocolate, coffee (brewed or instant)
grains (instant oatmeal in particular is a good addition. Also, Koreans have an 'instant ceral' powder, composed of all sorts of roasted grains, which I think is quite good)
malt powder
raw egg (a little dangerous, but good for protein)
carrots (depending on how powerful your blender is--you may blend and strain as well)

I like a blend of strawberries and orange juice. Mmm, mm, mm. And a full dose of vitamin C.

Cost of smoothie (with whey) at smoothie place ~$6.
Cost of smoothie waiting 5 mins to get home ~$0.75

I like (pre-workout) ice, skim milk, ON ice cream flavor, malted milk powder, honey, banana or strawberries. If it's for breakfast I'll add a normal serving of a hot breakfast cereal uncooked. The "crunchiness" adds to the ice texture, gives me more fiber and more bulk. The malted milk powder adds a neat flavor.

That's my main stay but I'll combine almost anything, always with ice and usually with skim milk (but ice or water only right after a workout).

I used to work for Smoothie King and I've gotta say we used to put banannas in practically every smoothie we made (to make it creamier I guess). I've recently been experimenting with canned fruit (mostly pineapple) and frozen fruit like strawberries or blueberries. My favourite at the moment has to be the half can of pineapple a few frozen strawberries and a bit of orange juice to make it mixable add some cane sugar and soy protien and you're rockin'. I found out a while ago that if you want to make your smoothie without alot of ice you should break up some ripe banannas, freeze them for a day or two (or longer) and throw them in the smoothie like ice. Like I said before, you can add banannas to practically anything and it'll taste allright. Oh, and if a smoothie mix is tastin' bland you should throw a squirt of lemon juice (not lime, too bitter) and it'll jazz things up.

2 bananas, 1/4 blender container of ice, orange juice about half way up....

Same, with strawberries and a little less juice

Same with _no_ ice and a pack of _frozen_ strawberries.

Half pack frozen blueberries, half pack frozen blackberries, two bananas, OJ.
