A silly bet...
Hi,
Last night, my roommates and I dared one of our neighbors to drink the juice from the steaks that we marinated. It was a tall glass worth, I believe the beer afficionado called it "a pint", I'm not sure. What was in it? It was roughly half Coke, and the other half was blood, spices, etc. I feel kind of bad for him, be he felt it was worth doing for $20. Is he going to get a few dozen tapeworms? Will he die of food poisoning? Rob |

Doesn't sound like it was cooked--we're not talking about cooking run-off, we're talking about left-over marinade, right?
The coke probably killed anything biological. Doesn't mean you couldn't get sick off the blood. He probably won't die of food poisoning, but I'd watch him closely for, say, 72 hours. |

As long as the meat was fresh and had been properly refregerated for all stops along the way (including from slaughter to the supermarket) he should be OK. Obviously you have no control over it before you get it, so if you've never gotten bad meat from that market before, chances are pretty good he's alright.
On the other hand, most of the "bad stuff" on meat tends to be on the exerrior edges where airborne bacteria can settle and stick to, which is where the marinade was sitting. So there may be some foodborne nasties happening. He'll probably get the runs pretty bad. Shouldn't be anything worse than that.

I've done stupid stuff like that, without even getting 20 bucks. He'll probably be alright, but don't dare anybody else to do this, until you are ready to pay those med bills.......
mmm blood

Hell, some people pay good money to eat carpaccio or steak tartar and it's just raw steak and spices...

Yeah, if it came from a reputable meat market (not the kind with the big jigglies... oh wait!) then he is likely fine. I eat damned near raw meat most of the time. It's not like it was meat "product" like uncooked hot dog. Also, beef is less of an issue than say, pork juices. That shit would mess you up. At any rate, the human body IS designed to handle that type of thing most of the time. Some shits and maybe a bit of heartburn, but nothing much else is likely.
