Puttin' up Ye Tree ~

I'm doing it today! I have yet to got to sleep, but it's going up today by God.... I even went shopping TONIGHT with my sister-inlaws, and mother-inlaw at WALMART!!!

Heh... we'll be buying one soon too... Now that it's technically the day after thanksgiving, I can buyt Christmas decore without feeling guilty. And dammit, I will... I love Christmas :)

We've got 10 of our 15 trees up, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! And the neighbors were all busy today putting up lights. It's so cheery looking now.

I'll probably get mine up in about four weeks.

My wife is a Christmas fanatic so, at this very moment, sitting in a pile of ornaments with a tree nearby. The place is already 3/4 decorated and looks like Santa puked out everything Christmas into our apartment. Please help me!!!!

Seriiously.. I haven't had a tree for years... Seriously contemplated getting one this year, then I got it out of my system by putting up my parents tree yesterday. I'm done. I have a few Santas around my place (that stay up year round) and a few holiday themed cookie jars, that stay up all year - -maybe I'll dust 'em.

I did put a Holiday themed plaque on my front door... Decorating's done.

I always thought setting up the tree before mid Dec was too early. There is only so much xmas cheer I can deal with.

My wife likes to put the tree up around December 1st, so I imagine it will go up next weekend.

We like to take the kids up north and cut our own tree. I just like the smell and look of a real tree better than a fake one.

The problem is that for the past couple of years I have been away on business at the start of December so I miss out on the annual slaying of the tree (as my son and I call it). I will be thinking of their slog through the snow as I slog through the crowds of shoppers on Singapore's Orchard Road...

We did most of our Christmas decorating today. We put the lights on the roof, the light-up trees in the front yard, the garland and bows on the front porch, and the manger scene in front of the house. We put up the tree, but we haven't gotten it decorated yet.

Sorry to say but where I live with my friends probably won't get one, too big of a mess is probably what the owner of the house will say, and he thinks a fake tree is just to "fake" I miss the days when I used to live in my dump of an apartment and had a real tree and had a christmas party to decorate it with beer cans. Oh well at least my parents will have a real tree. :)

Amonkie has us beat in numbers. We have 12 trees (7 indoor and 5 outdoor), and we still have 3 indoor and 1 outdoor left to go. Since Saturday is a shopping day, then it will have to be finished Sunday.

Im not putting a tree up at all. I live alone, so there's no real point.

Can you explain your trees a little? Are these mini trees, or do you actually have 10 regular size trees up somewhere inyour house?

2 weeks before christmas is fine with me, especially since we get a real tree

I still have my "fall" wreath on the door. Last time I checked is was still November.

We actually just put up our fake 2 ft Christmas tree about 5 minutes ago.

You know, I just checked, and you're right, it's still November!!! :thumbsup: :D ;)

I thought I'd go along with that "Day after Thanksgiving" tradition of putting up the tree. It's up, it looks pretty. I even got some shopping done the "Day after Thanksgiving" too. I got my most expensive gift for my daughter out of the way - I feel almost responsible this year. :)

My "fall" wreath is now my "winter" wreath, because it could be for both. :D

If I was moved into my house already I would get a tree sometime in mid dec..maybe around the 10th. My girl is a decorating fanatic so she would take care of everything else. My only mission would be get the tree. Though she is a fan of fake ones while I lean heavily towards "real" ones so that will have to be an issue next year. For the time our place is way to small to support one :( Next year though I will be posting on my alcohol induced-tree putting up experience :)

We have a small palm tree that we just put christmas lights on. I'm not sure if this counts, but its what we put our presents under. I can't imagine bringing a real tree up 5 flights of stairs (I live on the third floor), but I think that my wife is not going to let me get by with just decorating our palm tree for too much longer. She always had a real tree when she was growing up, so that will only be sufficient now.

My g/f and I hate christmas trees. We'll never put one up.

We have many lights outside....the neighbors gushed...me thinks it may be a little too bright. Inside we have a tree in the living room and one in the sunroom. Electric candles are in all the windows and in the hallway are two small natural looking pine trees that my cats have adopted as their own. I did not experience this degree of elaborate displays while I was growing up. It is a culmination of my love of decorating and my husbands' year long anticipation of the Christmas season.

The festival season was marked by much merrymaking. It is in ancient Rome that the tradition of the Mummers was born. The Mummers were groups of costumed singers and dancers who traveled from house to house entertaining their neighbors. From this, the Christmas tradition of caroling was born.

In northern Europe, many other traditions that we now consider part of Christian worship were begun long before the participants had ever heard of Christ. The pagans of northern Europe celebrated the their own winter solstice, known as Yule. Yule was symbolic of the pagan Sun God, Mithras, being born, and was observed on the shortest day of the year. As the Sun God grew and matured, the days became longer and warmer. It was customary to light a candle to encourage Mithras, and the sun, to reappear next year.

Huge Yule logs were burned in honor of the sun. The word Yule itself means “wheel,” the wheel being a pagan symbol for the sun. Mistletoe was considered a sacred plant, and the custom of kissing under the mistletoe began as a fertility ritual. Hollyberries were thought to be a food of the gods.

The tree is the one symbol that unites almost all the northern European winter solstices. Live evergreen trees were often brought into homes during the harsh winters as a reminder to inhabitants that soon their crops would grow again. Evergreen boughs were sometimes carried as totems of good luck and were often present at weddings, representing fertility. The Druids used the tree as a religious symbol, holding their sacred ceremonies while surrounding and worshipping huge trees.

In 350, Pope Julius I declared that Christ’s birth would be celebrated on December 25. There is little doubt that he was trying to make it as painless as possible for pagan Romans (who remained a majority at that time) to convert to Christianity. The new religion went down a bit easier, knowing that their feasts would not be taken away from them.

Christmas (Christ-Mass) as we know it today, most historians agree, began in Germany, though Catholics and Lutherans still disagree about which church celebrated it first. The earliest record of an evergreen being decorated in a Christian celebration was in 1521 in the Alsace region of Germany. A prominent Lutheran minister of the day cried blasphemy: “Better that they should look to the true tree of life, Christ.”

The controversy continues even today in some fundamentalist sects.

Anyway, my family doesn't really get into Christmas. My mother doesn't have a job, so she just decorates for the fun of it.

I put up mine a couple days ago. I always procrastinate until mid-December when I have a million other things to do, so I went and did it this weekend. I love Christmas. We didn't celebrate it as a child so I get all into it now, especially since my son is getting old enough to be excited about opening presents :)

My roommate and I put up one of those little tiny fake trees tonight. Its fiber optic and looks cute while it helps brightens up the place a little bit.

I even have some presents wrapped and under it already! I only have to get about 5 more presents and all my x-mas shopping will be done!!

So we really are "Killing a tree for Jesus"

We always had a freshly cut tree when I was a kid, and we'd pile it into a bucket with water and rocks. And each year since I had kids, I would try and get a fresh cut tree, since I just love the look and feel of them. But since we've moved recently, there is nowhere I can get a fresh cut one - calls to nurseries and specialty shops have been fruitless.

So today, the kids and I went to Target and bought a fake one, but with fibre-optic ends that change colour. We decorated it and it looks wonderful. And the kids are happy. So I'm happy. :)
