Historic Route 66

Historic Route 66, aka the "Mother Road" or "Main Street of America" stretches from Chicago to L.A.. Route 66 is mentioned in several songs and movies. I travel a section of this road to and from work every day.

I was wondering how many people of the TFP have heard of this road?
How many have actually traveled a section?

Route 66 goes through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California.

I travel on Route 66 in AZ. How about You?

I live quite near to the section that runs through Southern Illinois, into St. Louis. I have been on the stretches around here many times.

I've only been in a small part of it when I was in New Mexico working on an Indian Reservation. Aside from that it's the only time I've been on it, and the first time I'd heard of it.

Hmmm...interesting thread. I live near and travel on the part in, around Santa Monica, Los Angeles. It's kinda neat. I always wondered where it went and what the story with "Historic Route 66" was.

Maybe we should start a trip this summer or a relay of some sorts. It would be neat to "connect the dots".

I travel a quite famous section of it often, through Amboy.

You've probably seen this sign in commercials it's been in a few, one was a Saturn car commercial.

i have lived on route 66 for much of my life. literally a hundred yards or so from it for... i think it's been 9 years total. now i live about 6 miles north of the old thing. there are some genuine points of interest close to where i live.

if you've read john steinbeck's "grapes of wrath" you'll recognize some of my local landmarks in the prose. i frequently fish off one of the bridges they crossed and a decent makeout spot is right off their route.

here is a pic of the bridge i took on a dreary day last fall.

Yes, I've known about Route 66 since I was a kid thanks to Natalie Cole:

Don’t forget winona,

I've traveled a part of it several times, between Albuequerque (sp??) and Flagstaff.

Of course, it's now Hwy 40 there, but it's still Route 66 to me

Used to live in Flagstaff and crossed everyday to go drinking. My friend's surf-rock band is named the Route 66 Killers.

Rt 66 in Flag is really kinda run-down, now.

Natalie? NATALIE??? I hope you've heard her dad's version. She's not bad, but Nat King Cole... that man could sing.

I've never been on Route 66, but I'd love to some day. I really want to go coast to coast.

I've been on Route 66. Stayed the night in Williams, AZ. And of course my mother being who she is, we had to listen to the song about fifteen million times.

I travel on it every day. My workplace, the National Hot Rod Association, is just off it in Glendora, CA. The cities in that area just went through a 'nostalgic period' and renamed it Route 66 (although not all of the signs have been changed which makes it a little confusing). It travels from Glendora, toward the sea, through Pasadena (where it becomes other street names) then out to the pier in Santa Monica. Millions of people probably travel on it each week and don't even know it. On my many drives into AZ I have wanted to take the small stretches of it where you see the signs "Historic Route 66, NEXT RIGHT", but then I worry for my suspension, as CA and AZ let it go out in the desert. But it would sure be fun to someday make it out to Chicago on as much as the old Route as I could get there on! Happy Roadtrips!

Check it out if you're interested in Route 66 in Pasadena (LA).

Heh, yes, I've heard his version. I like him a lot more (of course). I just heard her version first cause...you know...I was a kid right around the time she was popular.

I live somewhat near it, and traveled on parts of it in Oklahoma. One of the sites to see in Oklahome is the round barn in Arcadia. If I have time later, I'll find a pic and add to this post.
