Sure looking good matters. Sure being smart matters. Which matters more to you and why?

For me being smart matters more. I get the things I want in life, the opportunities to play, through my smarts. All my looks do is get me laid.

let's just say it'd be difficult to date someone who looks liks the backside of an ass, but if they can look decent [no need to be a model], keep themselves tidy, and remember to wear deoderant, it's all good. Any better looking and it's just a yummy bonus.

BUT...whether the guy is at the lower end or higher end of the looks spectrum they'd have to be smart. Not a super genius, but competency is a minumum.

I think I agree with everyone so far that it's a bit of both. Personality and intelligence go a long way in making a girl more attractive. I still look for a girl who's attractive, but if she's supermodel hot, but dumb and bitchy, I'll walk away in a heartbeat, and if she's average or better, but smart and good-natured, I'll stick around.

I'll bet for many people here, like me, it all starts with looks. I won't suddenly become attracted to someone who's homely, just because they're s.m.r.t.

Not to say that it begins and ends with looks, but I have realized that beauty is what initially sparks my interest, and brains/personality are what keep me interested.

How can one really choose between the two? I would think that it would be natural for people to sort of require both attributes to contribute to the actractiveness of a mate... It's like food and water; eyecandy is good and fulfilling in it's own way, but we'll die without some intellectual nourishment...

Brains + Confidence = Hot

The really amazing thing about confident, brainy chicks is that even if one is homely, she will carry herself and converse in a way that makes her presence felt, and will make people WANT to be around her. This is a winning combo, and I will gladly choose her over a dense supermodel or one that lacks confidence.

Of course a confident, brainy, AND beautiful chick is every man's dream, but I don't think its possible to have all 3 at once. One is always deficient....

well, i guess this depends on the desired outcome of the relationship.

if i´m looking for something for right now, or an affirmation of my own social appeal, then sure, its about looks... and to a lesser degree a mental connection.
but ideally, both are equally important.
