Career Advice? - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

I'm just about finished with my AS Levels (dunno what the american equivolent is, but we take these when we're 17-18, last 2 years of school). If my grades turn out to be good, i'll have passed Media Studies, Politics, English Language and Information Communication Technology. I'm now looking to decide on which course(s) to study at university.

My question is, if you had a pass in all these subjects, what course would you take at university? Which course(s) do you think would suit me best?

i dont believe there is a course that will fit a person that does a certain set of subjects.
i'm getting closer to university preference entry by the day, and ive known for quite a while what i wanted to get into.
i found that actually working in what you would be doing by doing work placement is an incredible asset to deciding what to study. i've completed over 4months of unpaid work placement doing different jobs i thought i'd enjoy. boy was i surprised at what i learnt.

my advice to you, would be to really look into what you want you enjoy, and go from there. its not about what anyone else thinks, just yourself. your the one that will have to do the course, then work in given industry. if you dont like it, whats the point?

Want to have fun? Take International Foreign Policy or Political Science.

Want to make money? Go into Advertising, Marketing, or General Business.

first.
take a year.
work.
then go to university, and take some courses, not a majo, but a smaterring of courses, history, scinec,e language, politics, whatever.. open your eyes up to whats out there.
2 years isn't that much time in the long run.

Stay the hell out of graphic design too. It's good to be multi-faceted. Don't focus on one thing.

find something that you think you'll enjoy, but ask yourself, can i make a living from this?

also, frozenstellar, where in australia u from?

If you find something you have passion for,study it. If you live it ,you'll make money. Just don't study something because someone thinks you should or even study something for the money.I know people who are 40 years old,make a six figure salary,are miserable and all I here is how they would have liked to have done this or that. Would have,Could have,Should have. Do what you want,not what you have to do and you won't have to worry about it.

I reckon it's pretty hard to know what you want to do at 17 or 18. I sure as hell didn't. I agree about taking time out, if you can and if you want to. It was only after I left Uni for 2 years that I realised that I actually wanted to put some effort into studying. If you can think of things you enjoy doing then you can try and think how they might relate to a job. That might help you choose what you might want to study.

if you can handle it, take as many quantitative courses as possible. Those are the ones that add the most value. The 'mushy' stuff can always be added on later, but the math part is the hardest to learn on your own.

Hedge your bets.

For your first year, take your general studies, and experiment by taking one or two classe of the different fields that interest you. Don't commit until you have at least finished your first year of college. Oh, and expirement by taking a couple of course that you might not have considered.
