Stuttering-is it in the genes?
Ever since i was a youngin' i've had the tendency to stutter. Back in my youth i never really thought it was much of a problem..no one really made fun of me (except for that bastard kid Rodney in 2nd grade...he'll get his... ) Anyways..i never really considered it much of a problem at all in life. My father stutters occasionally, but no where near as often as i used to. Nowadays i've basically got it under control...i just take deep breaths before i speak, but sometimes i hear myself saying things really fast & 'stuck' together. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that it is a genetic thing, seeing as my dad and I both have this minor setback. My brother or sister don't have it, but i seem to be the one 'cursed' so to speak with this. Now that i'm 19, i've basically looked passed it, i think about it now and then but i don't let it bring me down ever. But hey lets look at the bright side, i remember reading something, somewhere, saying that people who stutter have a tendency to be really smart, and hey, i can't say im stupid  hehe well anyways, i guess thats it. any thoughts? comments? whatever, its all good. Thanks for readin :)

Although it is incorrect and wrong, many people will instantly assume you to be a bit slow-minded if you stutter. (I don't -- just stating the popular prejudice)
It's good that you don't let it get you down, though. It's even better that you consciously try to do something about it. I guess your options are that you can live with it (which it sounds like your currently doing a fine job of), or you could try to resolve the quirk. For the latter, I would suggest talking to a speech therapist and get some advice. But yes, best wishes regardless of what you choose! |
I mean i have thought about going to a speech therapist, and i just don't think i have it severe enough to go ahead and do that. But i am open to any sort of solution or remedy that i can do/use in the comfort of my free time...cause it'd just be one less thing to worry about, ya know? My thanks Antagony, i'm still getting used to people posting intelligent things on my threads :-D

Most welcome! I'm sure you'll do well in your endeavor.

Neither of my parents stutter but sometimes I do. Sometimes it feels like my thoughts are trying to come out faster than I can say them. It's like you said, "fast and stuck together". It can happen at any time and it may happen for a minute or two and then not happen for weeks or months. Personally, I just try to calm down and speak deliberately and slowly when it happens.

My brother stutters. He started when he was three and now he is 29. I used to feel sorry for him b/c he never would call in orders on the phone or go through the drive-thru. I'm not sure if it's genetic. My parents stuttered when they were young, but grew out of it. I never have stuttered.
He is okay with it now and some people don't even notice. However, if he sings or something, he doesn't stutter b/c he knows what he's going to say and doesn't have to think about it. |
Cliv i feel ya.
Yoshi, glad your brother has it somewhat under-control, its not easy to completely stop. Luckily i never had it to the point where i was afraid to speak to new people, i think i'm too loud to not be noticed :-! |
i have heard that people who stutter lose it once they sing. i think it's because singing is controlled in a different part of the brain than speech.
|
On a talk/interview show thye have in Australia, a guy was in a car accident and was slightly brain damaged. Anyway, when he talked with his normal voice, his speech wasn't recognisable, although once he started talking in an American (texan) or Irish accent his voice was veyr clear. That was quite interesting, might have something to do with what anti fishstick said.

Hey anti, maybe i should start singing then? :-P
Hmmm, nah i don't have it in me. I think i'll just keep talking and blah blah blahing on. :) |
I have a few friends who stutter..not sure where they got it from, but it's not a big deal. Most of the time I do not even notice it..
although I do have one friend and I think its pretty hot when she stutters  |
