Best Time To Run?
I've recently gotten into a running kick, and I try to run or do a long walk every single day.
Because it's so darned hot outside during the day, I usually do my running at night when it's cool outside and the sun isn't glaring down on you. I've also noticed that nobody else follows the same pattern. Is there an advantage to running during the day? Do you burn more calories? Obviously, the "scenery" is better because more ladies are running, but are there really any other advantages outside of that? Thanks! |

during the hotter days, the worst time to run is between 12pm and 4pm, that is usually the hottest time span of the day. if you do during that time, be extra careful and make sure you get plenty of fluids, you don't want to get heat stroke or exhaustion. otherwise, whenever you can fit it into you schedule and stick with it is the best time to do it.

If anything, you would burn more calories at night as you would have more energy due to less heat and sweat. Run when your body is most comfortable with the temperature outside. A good friend of mine runs at night.

I used to run at night alot, now I prefer the morning. Just give yourself a little time for your body to "start up." I like to have a bannana or something and read the paper, then go for a run and come back for breakfast.
Running in mid-afternoon is ok sometimes too, but my guess is that it's a bit more of "fake" exercise since alot of the effects of running in hot weather is in the form of water loss (sweat). When you get home and drink a glass of water that all comes back. Running at night/morning allows you to go farther and burn more calories as well as get better cardio endurance training. |

you do burn more fat if you run in the a.m. on an empty stomach since you don't have as many carbs ready to burn for emergy forcing the body to go for body fat first.

I've seen a lot of references that recommend running in the morning. The biggest reason is that it jump starts your metabolism and they say that it keeps your metabolism running faster for the majority of the day. I usually end up doing most of my running during the night, mainly because I am totally not a morning person at all. For some reason I enjoy running more at night and can push myself harder when its dark... It's totally mental, I know. Run when you enjoy it most, and when its convenient for you.

Although I'm not sure if you burn more calories per mile at different parts of the day, I remember reading that the best times to run are before 7 am, or after 9 pm. Something like that. Because I've had to work in the mornings all summer, I've taken to waking up at 6:30 am, and I find the lower levels of humidity make breathing easier. However, if you run at night, your body has had the whole day to stretch and loosen up, so you can push yourself harder sooner into the run.

If you'd like to loose weight by running it's recommended to run in the morning and also in the evening. Because a nice 45 min run (@ 70% of your max heart rate) elevates your resting metabolic rate for the next 10 hours. So basically you'll still burn fat after you've stopped.

For weight loss, I always do my training in the morning. Generally if I excercise during the day you, I feel that I am spending the first 20 minutes just burning off the last meal I had, not really burning off stored fat. When I go first thing in the morning, I start burnging stored fat right away. I've read several books that corroborate that, but every book tells you something different anyways.
If you aren't running for weight loss, but you instead you are just doing it for cardio or shear masochism, I'd say its up to you. |

I prefer running in the morining. Get me ready for the day and I'm too tired at the end of it to do much of anything.

Run when it works for you is best. No optimal programme will work if you miss workouts regularly because that is not optimal for your lifestyle. energy levels etc ..
The morning workouts can burn = calories But if you are smart they can burn a greater amount of fat calories i.e. fat makes up a greater proportion of the same number of burnt calories. Glucose or sugar is used by the brain all night and is a little low in the bloodstream come morning. So the body will have to fight for more protein and fat. There are things you can do such as the ECA stack to enhance this even more. But ..... fat MUST be burnt with oxygen or NO energy at a muscular level. So this means you will feel yourself working hard but your split times may not be near your best. So if your goal is fat burning then great! If it is anaerobic fitness and competitive running .. bad! If your interested in more just ask and we can discuss effective timing and type of breakfasts after this training and also after a night run. Hope to hear from you.

I agree that morning runs, before any type of meal, are a great way to burn off calories.
But i dont have time to run in the morning so i do lots of evening runs. Running one way or another is obviously gonna give you great cardio and health benefits. I recommend buying a good pair of shoes as well, so that the joints dont get jolted about when your feet hit the pavement. Happy Running! |

My college health teacher believed that running in the morning before eating trained your body to store fat more readily when you finally do get some calories. Constantly straining your body would cause it to store more fat during the rest of the day. It seems to make sence, but I'm no biologist.
I used to run in the afternoons, but after a few night runs with dunkelhelmut I was converted. It's a lot cooler out, there's no traffic to deal with, and my asthma dosen't bother me as much. |
