American InterContinental University - Anyone ever heard of it?
My husband is looking to do the distance online learning thing - mostly cuz it's the only way to get a degree when you're serving in the Army - and he has been doing his research. What he's found is American InterContinental University and I was wondering if anyone had experience with this school. University of Phoenix is not an option - they're do damn expensive and I have a friend who works for them - I know too much of the inside operations to have him go there.
Anyway - Anyone know any reason why he should or why he shouldn't go there? Rachel

Well, there's one here in Atlanta, but I don't have any experience with it. I remember hearing some stuff, but no facts. I did a google search for "American Intercontinental University review" and got some links you might be interested in.
Here's the search: http://www.google.com/search?q=ameri...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 The only think I remember hearing (I think) is that there was a posting on an official bulletin board saying that graphic design students should be purchasing windows machines because the Macintosh was being phased out of the design industry. HA! That's funny. And I think that they train using Freehand instead of Illustrator. But I'm not really sure about all that. But I am sure that it's your portfolio and your interview that get you the job (in design), not the school you went to or the grades you got. Unless you failed out. Good luck. It sounds like a diploma mill... Sorry, but I wouldn't go for it. I wouldn't trust an online institution, not one that doesn't have an actual physical campus somewhere that people have actually heard of.

Now he offers his psychological expertise in his private practise. Does extremely well too. Considering he's pulling in approx. a 100 G a year, not bad for a guy with essentially a high school education. He mailed away for the diploma, and poof, 6 months later he's a doctor. He prefers to be addressed as doctor. I try and watch Americas Most Wanted just to see the day when he gets caught and is revealed as a fraud. But yeah, I wouldn't go the online route unless it's 100% legit from ever angle. You may pay more at a recognized university but that's security as I see it. And probably better looked upon as well on a resume.

I did a little looking around on the Net. AIU has some basic credentialling; it handles business training for some large corporations. I read a comment or two on boards from people who were underwhelmed at the quality of the online training.
Thing is, AIU is not only online, but specializes in accelerated degree programs -- get your degree FAST! I just graduated from an accelerated degree program at a public university, and I have some real problems with the concept. Basically, you have so many hoops to jump through in such a short amount of time that you don't really learn very much. It'd be even worse if he was taking the classes online, with limited contact with instructors and other students. And I doubt that the instructors are particularly great. There are good distance learning programs out there, some from good public universities. Tell him to keep looking, and to stay away from the accelerated crap. |

Don't do it! AIU started a campus in Plantation (outside Ft Laudadale) (long enough to get credentials) then moved to Weston (where some of the same students couldn't get to). They screwed the pooch long enough for the feds, then left students hanging. DO NOT TRUST THEM!
