Binary image
I have some image files that were taken by an infared camera. They are in binary - .bin file extension.
I would like to convert them to jpg, tiff, or any other format supported by Adobe Photoshop. Anyone know how?

Well, I'm definitely not the expert on digital photography, but a few things.
.bin as an extension doesn't actually tell you a whole lot about the contents of the files, or how they were encoded. However, you may be able to open them as they are. Simply try opening them in Photoshop and see what happens. Failing that, I know that Magpie's fancy digital camera allows you to choose what format you want to download the files in. If you have access to the camera, you may be able to re-download them in the format of your choice. Finally, there's probably a utility out there that'll do it for you. I'll leave that recommendation for someone who knows more about these things, though.

IrfanView - Official Homepage - one of the most popular viewers worldwide handles almost every image I've thrown at it with ease. Try that.

I've tried opening them in photoshop, paint, etc.
That little program didn't work, Cyn. Thanks for the tips, though. Anyone else have any ideas? ---------- Post added at 06:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:06 PM ---------- Thanks, Twistedmosaic. Unfortunately that program doesn't work either.

I believe they are both developed by the same company, but as I have yet to use Irfanview, and have limited experience with xnview, I'd like some input on how to handle batch pic-resizing with either program. Whichever handles that function, is the one I'll keep. So, if you could help me figure it out, I'd be most appreciative. Sorry to de-rail your search about .bin files and how to handle them, genuinegirly. I don't know if this pertains at all to what you are asking, but I recently bookmarked this search engine in order to learn more about using it effectively. This is it: http://www.binsearch.info/faq.php

Ok - so I've renamed the file extension to .raw and was able to open the with photoshop, but I am still fiddling with getting the right pixel ratio.
The image looks like a fuzzy nightmare, but it's more promising than anything I've tried tonight, so I'll keep fiddling with it. ---------- Post added at 08:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:20 PM ---------- Got it! Whew! 1) Directly change the file name from .bin to .raw 2) Open the file in Adobe Photoshop. 3) Figure out the height x length pixel ratio for your specific image (mine was 512 x 162) 4) REJOICE! 5) sleep. I figured out the pixel ratio by taking the automatic pixel ratio that Photoshop guessed (288 x 288), multiplying them, taking that number and finding all of the factors of that number, trying them along the way. It started looking like the image I wanted at 384 x 216, then I continued searching possible factors until I figured out 512 x 162. There has to be a computer program out there that can do this crap. Oh well - at least it's done!
