it's no where as easy as you think it is to actually do it, but it's not that difficult a concept, read it and you should be able to get it with some work, but if u have the tools its much easier

I had fun researching this not long ago, but please note, that this can get you in a lot of trouble if you actually do it. Also, just owning lock pics is illegal in some municipalities if you are not a locksmith.

Picking locks with a single set of pins is easy.... It's all in the tension wrench as explained in Lebell's first link, The last lock I picked was on my friends Blazer.... his son had lost the key to the spare tire, and it was a big MasterLock.... I tried for a few minutes but it wouldn't pop, so I shot some WD40 in it and opened it in about ten seconds..... being out in the weather had gummed it up.

I was apprenticed to a locksmith for awhile before moving back into computers. Picking isn't hard at all to learn, but it's 90% feel so it takes lots of practice. Some locks are easier than others, and some are made to be difficult or impossible to pick.
Once you learn what's involved, you're going to laugh whenever you seem some actor "pick" a lock in a movie or on tv. Annoys the hell out of my wife.:D Those are good sites! From what I was told, they qualify as "burglary tools" and as such, are illegal for you to have in your car unless you can prove you're a locksmith. Same goes for slim jims. This is in ILL. anyway. They aren't actually illegal to own, you just can't have them on you outside the house I guess. |

I see these guys on TV walk up to a door, turn around and with one slide of the rake, they're in. Bullshit. But my wife just goes, "well if you're good you can do that". Whatever. Any of you all use one of the lock pick guns? What a male torture device those would make, eh? |
Thanks for alll of the great links. I always wondered how you get started. One of the sites explains how to remove the tumblers from a deadbolt. You start with one and then reinsert them as you get better. Very cool.

Reminds of when I did something similar though. I had a customer walk in to my store with one of those large round American brand locks. They look like they'd resist an anti-tank round. His key wasn't working to well and he wanted to know what to do. Without a boring lecture lets just say that the lock mech. is actually really simple to defeat in spite of how it looks. I told him the key was probably worn, but lets see if the lock is working in the first place. I took a pick and in/out/click! That fast. doesn't always work that way, but this time it did. He started sputtering and said "but then what is the use of having a lock" I sold him a better one instead. Not what I had intended, but it worked out well.:D |
When I was a kid I cut a master lock open to see how it worked, and found out that the part that slips into the notch of the shackle dosen't really lock..... it just snaps shut and the key simply moves it back when you open the lock. Just a well aimed shot with a hammer to the right spot and a downward yank pops them open every time....... :)

Called "rapping". Works for some other locks too.

I saw a show called "Repossesors" a couple days ago. They were repo'ing a Porche. One guy was lookout and the other picked the door lock and then the ignition. They kept going to a close up of the lock picking, then back to the lookout saying "hurry up" over and over. What was interesting was that the closeups clearly showed him just rattling the tools in the lock and not doing anything at all. It took awhile.
Then when the guy finally has the car started and is pulling out of the public garage, he tells the camera "two locks in under a minute. That's pretty good I think". Sooo, the producer was trying to heighten the drama by having him pretend to be struggling for a while. This is reality tv huh? |
mtsgsd: lol they have to make it seem like its hard to the public so everyone wont just go do it.
