[question] How to get rid of vermins?

I have an infestation of squirrels and chipmunks and mouse in my backyard.
They actually ate the plastic siding to get inside and then made nests of everything possible. They ate chairs, mattress, plastic jars, baseball gloves, etc.... enough to cost a ton of $$. we live in a wooden area with a tiny field and forests and rivers around my house so it's very hard to get rid of them. even if we cut down all the trees in the area, they'd still be here.

One reason is because we have bird feeders and that definitely attracts them but I'm searching for a way to get rid of the squirrels and not the birds.

in the past, I had an air rifle(pump 10 times to scare, pump 20times to kill) and that did the job for 1 summer. but then the mouse came in and they're so small that we can't really kill them with the gun.

So what I'm looking for it a way to get rid of EVERYTHING with 1 method if possible.

I'm on the search for a CO2 powered rifle so i can kill the bigger ones on sight. but for the ones I cannot see, i need a new method.

mouse traps?
cages?
poisons?
covering the shed with metal siding?

any ideas?!

You can try everything you mentioned. Metal siding would defiantly be a plus (I worked at a farm and garden store to have fielded this question before).

This still doesn't guarantee that the little buggers will stay out. They are remarkably resourceful.

The poisons on the market will kill mice, possibly chipmunks, and rats if you have them, but won't touch the squirrels. Squirrels have a gag reflex and will throw the poison back up.

Naturally traps work, but they are a pain in the ass to set, empty, reset, and at most, you will be effective will population control, not extermination.

Sorry to break it to you, but that's about the best you can do. Limit their access to food stores. Not much you can do about them getting in the feeders except shoot them (hopefully missing the feeder), but outside that, I don't have any additional suggestions.

Well, I have one. A good cat. But cats like birds too.

You should be able to get coyote and/or fox urine at most decent greenhouses. Check into it. It'll keep almost anything away.

We had mice in our cupboards for a few months. Eating and pooping everywhere.

I bought some old-school $0.99 wooden mouse traps, baited them with a drop of honey (they seem to prefer the sweet things in our cupboards) and rained sweet vengeance upon the mouse population.

sweet! thanks for the comments guys!
i'm gonna try the mouse traps just because it's the cheapest way to go for now. set up like 10 in and around the shed.

and then if we still get em, i'll try the GUN.

in the meantime, my dad will get metal siding and under the roof too. hopefully that keeps em out. fuckers.

Try 'Wire Wool' to bung up any gaps that they are using to gain access . None of the critters can chew thru it.

Anti-Freeze....but you need to add sugar now (they removed the sweetness to protect animals). Just leave a bowl out where they gather overnight...they will be gone within a week. I just hope you don't have cats around.

Have you tried moving your feeders further away from the house?

Where are you keeping the bags of seeds?

Also make sure you store the seeds in a metal can with sealed lid so they can't get into the feed stores.

A barn cat would do wonders for you.

clorine, white pepper and/or red ceder tree usually helps

Had a friend in come up with this idea:

Surprisingly enough, it got rid of his vermin problem.

I realize it's been a couple months, but we used to get mice and all kinds of stuff up along our pipes into the kitchen. We bought one of those noise makers that shoots out a really high pitches whistle at a low volume, we just put it near the hole where they came in. It was under the sink so you couldn't hear it and it kept out the mice for more than 5 years until the speaker died. I would have bet good money that the damn thing didn't work. I was wrong.

thanks for the late replies everyone! I'll check out some more of these ideas when spring comes back. for now, they're all mostly hibernating or something.

This works so quickly, I think I may have read it on some 'organic' site.

Save human male urine in a container for approx. a week, then simply pour 1/4 cup of this down any critter hole and the little buggers will scoot.

I rinsed out a laundrey detergent bottle, set it next to the pissin place,
and instructed all males to please use that for just a little while.

I would like to know how fast this works for you.

The anti-freeze idea is crawling around in my conscience.
I have to say something.
Pleeze don't anyone seriously consider this option.

It pushed a button in me, bigtime.

its illegal for a reason.

I had to watch my cousin cry and mourn his beloved dog, after it got a hold of meat tainted this way.
