PSP racing games

I've been thinking about adding a racing game to my PSP collection, but with so many to choose from, I don't know what to get. I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore racing fan or anything, but I have enjoyed most of the Need For Speed series, Midnight Club, GTA, etc... Midnight Club 3: DUB was just released this week, but after reading some reviews, it looks like it's plagued by long load times and poor framerates...

What racing games have you played on the PSP? Did you like them?

YaWhateva 06-30-2005 09:45 PM

Wipeout: Pure is amazing. I love that game.

Isn't there a Burnout game coming to the PSP soon? Personally, I'm not a big fan of racers as a genre, but the Burnout series has totally sucked me in. So my money's on that one.

I really enjoy the NFS Series, I'd stick with Rivals :)

Krycheck 07-01-2005 08:40 AM

Wipeout Pure is pure sex.

NFS is good too but I can't seem to win my current circuit race after 20+ tries :(

nothingx 07-01-2005 02:56 PM

Wipeout, eh? I've been reading some good things about that one. I saw some video footage of it too, and it really does look slick. What about Ridge Racer? Most of the reviews put Wipeout and RR on about the same level...

I haven't played Wipeout yet, but I have Ridge Racer and it's pretty fun. I've had hours of enjoyment out of it. I'd recommend buying it if you're wanting a racing game.

I'm also not that big on racing games, but this one isn't bad at all.

This thread makes me want to buy Wipeout.

My PSP collection is just Wipeout Pure and NFSU Rivals.

Wipeout Pure is the best Wipeout to date. It's fun, it's fast, and you really feel the speed. Also, there are downloadable levels. It was my first game, and I played it like mad. It's got a cool techno trance soundtrack, typical of wipeout games. Me likee. This is the game I show off to people when I show them my psp.

I felt the need for a racer that let me switch gears, and picked up NFSU. First off, it says on the box that it supports infrastructure play (thats connecting to the internet and playing against others like you would on a pc with, say, Counter-Strike). It DOES NOT SUPPORT ONLINE PLAY. Just ad hoc, short distance wireless play. So that was a big upset for me. It is quite hard, and I've often been in spots where I couldn't pass any levels without upgrading, but I'd need to win to have enough points to upgrade. The soundtrack is like NFSU2's with some additions, and I find most of that to be complete crap.... Drag racing and Nitrous run are really fast and really fun. Most of the modes use variations of the same tracks, which gets a little repetitive. The game really feels lacking, and I think it was a rush job to get it on the market. It's still the game I've been playing most on the go, though.

Thanks a ton for the suggestions guys. I ended up getting a copy of Wipeout, and let me just say, it's freakin' sweet. I was a little afraid it was going to be a boring F-Zero type game, but it is so much more. The style and presentation is the biggest turn on for me. I love the way it looks and sounds. I haven't really gotten into it yet, but after the first couple hours I'm really diggin' it.

One thing I think is really great, that no one mentioned, is that you can download more tracks and stuff from the website. I love this concept because its like getting a free expansion pack.

Maybe some day I'll look into NFS or RR... maybe by then GT4 will be an option too. :)

I don't like ridge racer, only because its just too easy, I've beaten it and it didn't take me very much time.
I can't wait for the new burnout game, reviews say its similiar to the new Burnout: Revenge, and that would be awesome!!

Wingless 07-05-2005 10:16 PM

I think it's called Burnout: Vengeance, but don't quote me on that one...

If I stretch the scope of this thread a bit, forgive me... but I thought I'd put my 2˘ in on Midnight Club 3. I figure someone will ask about MC3 at some point.. :o

Since Wipeout is a great "quick fix" racing title, I was looking for a more involved racing experience...and IMO, Midnight Club 3 is a very impressive piece of work.

The range of customizations and vehicles (60+) are incredible, and unlike NFS Underground, you aren't forced to "rice out" your cars to progress in the game. Add in the free roaming environment (which NFSU Rivals lacks) and the other arcade races and you've got a game that will last for quite a while.

And beyond the visuals, there's a solid physics engine that gives the cars real character and distinct handling. For instance, the SRT4 I started out with will understeer all day until you get on the handbrake. By comparison, the '57 Bel Aire will swing its arse wide with a quick jab of trailbraking. It's not Gran Turismo level tuning, but when it comes to driving, I'd argue that MC3 is better than the NFS:U titles.

Like I said, just my 2˘. :)

MC3-DUB sounds well within the realm of "PSP racing games" ;)

Really?? What about all the negative things that have been said about MC3? Don't the load times really bother you? I've heard that sometimes it can take literally over a minute to load a race. That sounds insane to me. Also I've heard that the frame rates kind of suck when the action gets intense. Any truth to that?

wdevauld 07-26-2005 03:17 PM

I'm content with NFSU:R until Burnout is out for the PSP

politicophile 07-27-2005 01:00 PM

The Gran Turismo series is definitely the way to go: soooo many cars and the very best physics engine. I can't tear myself away from GT4 sometimes... :D

damn we aussies have to wait till the 1st of september till we can get the psp!!!

Mr.Deflok 08-02-2005 12:20 AM

Not too long now my Australian buddy!

Though it's been said I've got to say it too: Wipeout Pure is godly, I love to bits and would have it's children if that were possible.

I'm keen to try out Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition too seeing as how the Xbox version is so brilliant.
