need to make a GOOD marvel superhero game

remember that old side scroller/beat em up for SNES? great game. Similar for Spiderman/Carnage etc...

I just played the demo for some spiderman game for pc and deleted it shortly after. It wasn't interesting (obviously aimed at the much much younger gaming generation) and completely lost what it was to be spiderman. I mean, the dude can flip a volkswagen, yet it still takes a dozen hit to knock over a simple bank robber.

They need to make a good spiderman game, good phsyics, great webcrawling/slinging, where spiderman is a badass like he used to be. Not a mcdonald's toy.

I am so looking forward to the next Freedom Force game, i LOVED the first one.

Spiderman 2 is supposed to quite amazing, not really a Spidey fan so I can't atest to that.

X-Men on the Genesis was fucking awesome (the side-scroller where you could choose to be Wolverine, Cyclops, Gambit or Nightcrawler). I still play it, and still love it. No marvel game has come to close to that ones awesomeness yet. X-Men Legends looks set to be delicious but I'll have to play before saying anything else about it.

I think X-men Legends is your only hope. Although there are some Marvel MODS for Freedom Force.

My favorite Spider-Man game was Sega's arcade game, with the 4-player action. You could also be Black Cat, Hawkeye, or Namor... no idea why they used the last two instead of more Spidey-affiliated heroes like Daredevil or Torchy. The one that came out for all the consoles a few years ago was pretty good too, though.

I played the demo of Spiderman 2 last night (which I think was the one Rune reffered to).

...and it's complete crap. Don't even bother downloading it, don't buy the game, it's crap.

yea, there's only 2 buttons.

imagine a spidey game, where you could swing around a large city, with pedestrians, cars, everything. (Grand Theft Auto like) that would be SOOO cool.

You could play the story missions of course, but there would also be non linear missions, like finding and stopping a mugging, swinging over the brige to stop a robber, supervillains on the loose. You could even have peter parker missions where it's your job to photograph spidey (i.e. set up a camera in the right spots)

Of course they'd need to get all spidey's traits right, swinging from buildings, jumping high, climbing up stuff, super strength (which most games over look)

You could even have a "pubic opinion" rating, where your view in the public eye would change depending on what you did. Non linear, "save the old lady!" type missions would increase this, (of course the news media would hate you) and depending on what you do during your missions, it would change to. People on the ground would be like "hey look, it's spiderman!" (instead of the "in the navy" or whatever from GTA) you could websling on to backs of cars and such.

oh well. the game industry need me, i know it ;)

I agree that a GTA style superhero game would be pretty cool. To me, the problem that superhero games get into is that they try to impose video-game style limitations on the powers of the hero. In a lot of superman games, you have to get "powerups" to fly, and your heat vision is limited, etc. An easy way to get around that is to use a hero with more limited powers. Spiderman might not be a bad example, but there are still a ton of challenges from a game design standpoint. How do you accurately represent his powers without making him too powerful? Can spiderman just walk around the city in broad daylight? Should the city be freeform, like in GTA, or would it work better if it was compartmentalized in to specific levels with specific examples?

The essential problem here, and the main difference between it and a game like GTA is that GTA is based on the real world, and is plausible to some degree. Spiderman (or whatever) is totally fictional, and it's not as easy to make that transition. In other words, GTA with spiderman won't work out of the box.

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/521/521020p1.html - This explains the experience that both Rune and the_marq had playing the game. I'll be so nice as to put in the article. Hot off the presses from IGN:

June 03, 2004 - Like every action loving gamer across the planet, we became ecstatic when an unofficial Spider-Man 2 demo for PC was released as part of a Russian soft drink promotional program. We'll jump at any chance to play Spider-Man 2 on any platform because the game simply looks fun, see. Turns out this demo is not for the game we thought it would be.

In a nutshell, avid PC gamers are getting shafted. Spider-Man 2 for PC is a strictly toddler-oriented title that is in no way indicative of the console experience that we've covered for so long now. This is not a publisher trying to convince people to stray away from an unofficial demo, either. The game is fundamentally different in many ways.
On PC, Spider-Man 2 features brighter graphics more reminiscent of a cartoon than the movie. And, though it also features a familiar storyline with familiar characters, it boasts a kid friendly, intentionally simplified control scheme that's not for the hardcore amongst us.

Again, if you're interested in playing the Spider-Man 2 PC demo in order to see a bit of what the console versions will eventually be, don't bother. The titles are different and one does not represent the quality of the other.

I loved the original spiderman games for Playstation. Spider-man and Enter Electro. the ones right before SPIDERMAN the movie game came out. The original although it was a bit more linear(not entirely), it just seemed more fun and experimental and ground breaking. I didn't like the movie game at all. So i think they need to go back to thier roots on this one.

I thought Spiderman 2 WAS going to be a GTA clone....

heccubusiv 06-05-2004 09:26 PM

X2: Wolverine's Revenge was not that bad of a game, it was not that good either, but it could be used as a good starting place

Maveric 06-10-2004 06:09 PM

play city of heroes, i've made numerous marvel and DC clones in the game. some are pretty damn close to the originals in looks and powers.

i made an awesome Rad/Rad Defender that was a clone of Green Lantern that was the best in game experience I ever had roleplying...

GregsterGT 06-16-2004 11:47 AM

I remember an old SNES game with Spiderman and the X-Men called Arcades revenge or something like that. It was fun, but I remember it being difficult after the first level.

LNCPapa 06-16-2004 04:39 PM

X-Men Children of the Atom - doesn't get much better than that :)

X-Men vs Streetfighter was pretty damn good also

archer2371 06-16-2004 06:17 PM

The Punisher has such promise for a possible kickass video game.

NeverBorn 06-17-2004 07:50 PM

try Freedom Force..its not marvel..but it can if you want it to be I've seen Marval mods

Bim 06-17-2004 09:17 PM

I really enjoyed playing Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, I played that game to death. I feel sorry for my worn Dreamcast :(. Also i loved playing X-Men in the arcade, the one with, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Collosus, and damn i cant rember the rest... i know theres more. HAH drawing a blank right now.

I know it aint marvel, but you always have to rember the crap that was Superman 64. Ohh god, i never played a more horrid Super Hero game.

Ohh and storm was in the game too... one more tho... DAMN IT! ><

Dazzler, I think it was.

I got Arcade's Revenge for Christmas the year it came out, and I was deep in my Marvel fanboy phase. The Spider-Man & Cyclops stages were decent, but everything else was pretty miserable, in my recollection. They put Storm in a damn underwater bomb disposal level, a la Ninja Turtles on the NES.

hulk 06-17-2004 11:01 PM

I'm looking forward to the _real_ Spiderman 2. A lot. Like, an inordinate amount. I <3 my 'Cube.

Ugh, I remember that, and Gambit's level had a Giant ball of spikes chasing after him.
