It depends, obviously. There are great games for the PC that would never work on consoles, and the reverse is true as well. Consoles make for great party games and also some good single player stuff, but PCs generally have better large group play and so on. You can't get a really good flying game on a console, something like X-Wing, because there're just too many functions and not enough buttons. Rogue Squadron is a console interpretation, a flight sim lite. But I don't see how GTA Vice City could be nearly as fun on the PC as it is on the PS2. Buying a console comes down to games for me, so I'll play whatever's good on the PC or on a console.

Lately is seems like a lot of games are being developed to run on multiple platforms (consoles and PC). I'm sure this is advantageous for the game companies (more profits). But it sucks for the PC. The PC version of the game is always 'dumbed down' to the console's controls and save capabilities. If the trend keeps up, there's no reason to stick with the PC as a gaming platform.

I like the PC for strategy games. It's a heckuva lot easier to grab multiple units and such with my mouse than a big clunky controller.

However, for all other games console is the way to go. PC games are hard to program because everyone has very different PCs. It's hard for the gaming industry to take advantage of the big ass new video card when less thatn 1% of the buying public has them.

For consoles, it's static. Every gamecube/X-box/playstation 2 is just as capable as another gamecube/X-box/playstation 2. Standardization allows the game guys to take full advantage of the consoles capability.

Consoles are great and we have fantastic games on them and I refuse to put them down despite my great love fro PC games but quite frankly they have nothing compared to the PC Games.

Free multiplayer support, modding capability, better graphics, faster gameplay, patches.. the list goes on and on!

They both have thier ups and downs. A PC is much more powerful and has easy access to the internet, and a computer has almost no threshold for greatness! You can just keep upgrading until your CPU explodes! The downside if you dont have alot of money for these upgrades games suck big penis and you haveta install CPU games.

So quick list.
Pros:
Can be upgraded to infiniti
Easier to access online games
Cons:
Games suck if you don't upgrade your computer enough
Have to install games.

Now platforms also are good and bad. On the upside you never have to wait for install times, just pop it in and your good to go! And once you buy a system its all you need to play any game made for the system. That is it's blessing and it's curse. On the down-side it's very costly and hard to play online, what with all the adaptors and add-ons.

Quick list.
Pros:
No installs
Never have to upgrade
Cons:
Hard if not impossible to upgrade till the next version comes out. (EX PS -> PS2, N64 -> GC)
Hard/annoying to access the internet.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to games.

I would hate to play a fast FPS or an RTS on a console.

Conversely, I'd hate playing stuff like Silent Hill or Zelda on the PC.

I can't stand consoles. PCs are insanely better, and even if you do claim that some games are better on consoles because of the controls, you can use an xbox controller for a gamepad on your computer, or just get any other gamepad. PCs rule in every way. Sure, you have install the games, but only once. Is it that big of a deal to have to wait a couple minutes before you play a game for the first time?

PCs are great for gaming, but they can also be 4 to 5 times more expensive, not to mention how often computer hardware goes out of date...

One of the things I really like about console gaming is being able to sit back on my couch in front of a big tv with the sound coming out of a nice entertainment system in surround sound.

But If I had to choose one and only one, I would choose PC Gaming, just because the games tend to have more depth, and don't usually fall into the model of 20 minutes of gameplay followed by 30 minutes of cutscenes.

I'm with Peter Puppy (man I never, ever thought I'd type those words). I got tired of being caught on the upgrade treadmill. With each new round of games you have to upgrade your PC hardware, then the new drivers make your PC more unstable, so you have to keep upgrading to try and stabilize it, which can make it more unstable. Then the next round of games come out and you have to upgrade again...

I got a GC for Christmas, happy as a clam with it. I'll probably try to get an Xbox this Christmas because there are a lot of games on it I'd like to play and the GC doesn't seem to be going anywhere with it's online play. But I may just hold off on the Xbox if the GC games keep me entertained, heck I've only got 4 so far.

It's true that for most one-player game the PC is king. Anything that is all about taking the time to figure things out on you own and blow the hell outta monsters in the privacy of your bedroom should be done on the PC.

The only area where consoles really have strong point is anything that invovles more than one player. Now I know some people will bring up online game but that is crap. Nothing beats MarioKart in a room full of 4 guys all gunning for the chance to go in backwards. Or even just two player games like NHL93-03. Online gaming on the PC will never ever come close to that. Typing to your friend on Diablo "U stink : )" will ultimately always be lamer than a "Fucking Boo-yah in your face!" delivered from across the couch.

Well no wonder my $3000 PC can out-perform my XBOX and PS2 babies, that costed less than 10% each. The PC has tens of thousands of gadgets on the market to add on from. If only that market will prevail the PC will allways be ahead, at much larger cost though. As a tech freak with a fat wallet the PC will rule my home forever.
The XBOX is doing a great job so far to entertain me though. It is so much like a PC in that you can integrate it into your network and through its FTP-server (modded XBOX), put games and media on the hard disk and do alot of other tweaking and customising.
The PS2 is totally anonymus and some of the fun games is what makes me keep it.

So while the PC is outstanding in so many ways and will allways rule, the consoles are the greatest party-machines, great for gaming in bed/sofa and, in the case of XBOX, great fun to tweak and integrate with the PC.

As for the games themselves, all platforms have some excelent unmatched releases. But thats personal depending on what games you play and how you prefer to control them.

If you have the dough, you've got to have them all!!!!!

Console is superior for sports games and platformers
PC for sims, and stragegy.
They push for RPGs in my opinion.
I have both PC and a couple of consoles but spend most my time on the pc.
of course, not too many console'ers are reading this so the vote will prob go to the pc.

I'm not sure if this thread is still alive (if people still look at it), but I like both, except I lean more towards console. I guess the main reason why I like console games is because a couch is far more comfortable and spacious than any computer chair I've ever seen, and I especially like playing HALO with my pals on a big sofa or whatever. Sure, you can set up a LAN but people tend to have gigantic, sensitive monitors and those really big computer cases, and having to haul all that expensive equipment around and gently place it in someone's garage on some tables and then hook them up to the hub... well I dunno, I guess thats fun but it also takes a while. I think RPG's are best suited for the console, and I don't think I'd ever play HALO for PC (coming out soon) because the controls for X-Box + HALO kick too much ass, if you turn the sensitivity all the way up its just as good as a mouse. What else... well, RTS like StarCraft and all that is worth shit on the console, and should only exist on the PC. Only thing I like better about PC is how you can customize your game, like making your own maps (yeah I know someone else already mentioned this) and skins especially for FPS games. HALO is the only FPS that rules on the teh console, every other FPS should stay on the PC.

Some of you mentioned that patching is a strength for PC's.
In truth, you need to look at why patches exist. A lot of times, to meet release dates, companies will release an unfinished title knowing that they can just release a patch later for the issues left unresolved. This means we (as consumers) get an inferior product.
Consoles are a different story (xbox being an exception and only applies to the Live enabled games), due to the fact that you cannot update games with patches. Developers are forced to produce games with higher standards upon release.
Sure its good that patches are released for bugs that have gone unnoticed, but we have no idea how many bugs go passed as "acceptable" on release unless there is a readme (on PC) informing us and these are only noted for the more serious issues like specific vidcard/soundcard incompatibilities and such.

Oh, as for my opinion on what is best, though... I dont think there is a "best" system. Like a few others posted before me, I believe different systems have their particular strengths and weaknesses. Even the different consoles are unique to each other. If you notice, multi-platform games are never identical and will often have an ideal system to be on and it wont particularly be the PC. Ports dont always go as planned as well.
I guess it all depends on who you are and what types of games you prefer, and where you like to sit, and how much you can afford, and blah blah blah...
This can be debated on forever. Cant it? *sigh*

I voted for PC only because I don't have the reflexes to play most of the console games available. Yes this does mean that most of the games that i play are the strategy/rpg/Simulation games that are usually best played on a pc with a keyboard and mouse.

PC vs. Consoles

Which do you prefer? I'd have to say PC at the moment, mainly for online gaming. I've got PS2 online but it doesn't compare to PC online gaming. I know its a hassle having to upgrade your PC every year or so, but visually, they're alot better then consoles. Which do you prefer?

I truely think that a PC is THE future. Sure, new consoles come out and look outrageously awesome....but then new computers/parts come out and obliterate them!
The best reason to become a PC gamer is the mods. That is 1 of the key factors when I purchase a game that is available on all platforms.
For example, GTA III on the PC is pretty standard and it runs like it does on the PS2. But once you download an awesome mod like RealGTA then EVERYTHING changes! It makes the PC version much more likeable.
