Star Wars Games for the Non-Gamer?
I haven't played anything since the original Quake back in the 90's and don't have any interest in getting sucked into an online world, but I do have a hankerin' for blowing up the Death Star and shooting out some AT-ATs.
Can anyone recommend a Star Wars game for PC that allows me to sit in the cockpit of assorted ST vehicles and run basic missions through the classic movie battles? Does such a thing even exist anymore? I'm looking for a game that I can enjoy for short stints rather than one with immersive planning and strategy or empire building. From what I've read, it looks like maybe Battlefront 1 or 2 is best for me. What do you think? |

Star Wars: Battlefront is what you need, end of story.
|
Lego Star Wars: The complete saga.
One of the funnest games ever - but I'll give the nod to the X v Tie series as well - back in the day they were my favourite game. |

I second Star Wars: Battlefront. That game is endless fun. And the ability to respawn many times during battles is good for the non-gamer.
Not sure if the multiplayer is still active though. |
Unfortunately, the best games of the kind you're describing are on consoles. Rogue Squadron II and III to be precise. The first RS game is on PC, but I don't know how good it is.
If you want to actually fly, then you're stuck with Rogue Squadron and Jedi Starfighter on PC. Neither is new and they do look pretty damn dated. |
X-Wing Alliance was my favorite by far. It was the first time the story did something to keep me interested in a Star Wars "flight" sim besides giving me 20-second breaks between missions.
But like a lot of things mentioned in this thread, the game itself is quite dated and might not have aged well in your opinion, depending on what you like. |

The game may be dated BUT the gaming engine is perfectly sound. The good folk at Xwing Alliance Upgrade (xwaupgrade.com) are adding new revised models so the game looks schmick once again. Seriously, check it out! ---------- Post added at 02:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:57 PM ---------- Of course there is always this little gem. You can find it on most freeware game sites but here is the link to developers. Battle of Yavin and Battle of Endor (Endor being the better of the two in my opinion). Most addictive games ever. bruneras.com - sorry, a noob to these forums so cant posy links. But slap a www in front and BAM! |
If you can get it running, TIE Fighter was absolutely awesome. Of course, it was out in 1994, so you'll need to be pretty good with an emulator, but damn was it fun.
Most of the Jedi Knight games are pretty good, except for Jedi Academy. |
Battlefront 2 !!!!!
Fantastic game series ... Like yourself I don't really have the time to spend for extensive campaigns. SWBF 2 and SWBF 1 are excellent if you want instant gameplay .... online play is the best way. They both still have strong followings. If you play online note that most games don't involve spacecraft ... but, I'm sure, if you looked you can find some servers that are more space-battle friendly. If you play the solo games you can play any way you wish. Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2 are the games you're looking for. |
I still play Battlefront routinely.
|
You do?
What's your tag? I go by "<-------Shoot_that_Guy" If you've played often no doubt you will have seen me. |
Actually, I don't really play online. It's more playing with people that come over and visit.
|
A pity.
Try online play. It's terrific when you have a full server with 35 other people online as well. |
Thanks for the advice everybody! I just ordered SW Battlefont I ($12 all in) so hopefull I'll be kicking AT-AT butt in a few days.

Be sure to let us know how you like the game!
Maybe we can meet online. |
