Breath some new life into me....

I've lost hope in gaming.

Most games i see out there are so monotonous that they're not that interesting to me anymore. I own a PS3 and a Wii, and no games seem to interest me. I've been looking forward to the release of Final Fantasy 13 in 2010 but thats too far away for me to keep interest. I thought about F.E.A.R. 2 since I own the original but it seems to hold the same characteristics as most first person shooters. I thought about Resistance: Fall of Man 2 but lost interest for the same reason as F.E.A.R. . I'm particularily in love with RPGs but there are not many good ones that have a good story out there. I do like shooters with well thought out storylines.

Am I being too picky or should I suck it up and get the above mentioned two games? And please name some games that would appeal to a person who's lost faith in the video game world.

Oooh I got it!

Valkyria Chronicles for PS3

I had one hell of a time trying to find it, and ebay sells it for about 100 american (ouch!). I will let you in on a little secret...

I found about 4 copies of it at South Centre at EBgames. They had new copies for $70, and 2 used ones for $55 (I think thats what it was). I got one of the used ones, this was about a month ago, I imagine they might have some left. Go check it out! (I am assuming you are still in C-spot)

Baraka_Guru 04-17-2009 03:15 AM

I too am concerned about the RPG genre. I hope MMORPGs haven't ruined it.

Wrexify 04-17-2009 06:07 AM

I feel your pain... I can't keep interest in a single player game for more than a few minutes anymore. The only time I truly enjoy gaming now is when I play Team Fortress 2 or Left 4 Dead with friends. Maybe the occasional Rock Band song, but again I lose interest quickly if there aren't other people playing.

I'd be interested to hear some suggestions too... I miss good gaming!

Baraka_Guru 04-17-2009 06:20 AM

Have any of you played Oblivion, yet? I've held off because at the time of its release, my machine was too weak to run it. I have a newer one that will chew it up now. And I see it's getting cheaper to buy.

Maybe that will fill some time until some better releases come around?

braisler 04-17-2009 06:30 AM

Have you played through Crackdown, Assassin's Creed, Fable I and II? Those should keep you going for a while.

ObieX 04-17-2009 06:34 AM

Oblivion is ok i guess. You do get that rpg feel when playing it. But when playing it i also get an... empty..(?) feel as well. I guess thats because i've been playing mmorpgs for over a decade now. I have a hard time getting a feeling of fulfilment out of Oblivion.

I'd recommend Fallout 3 over Oblivion if you haven't played it. Its like Oblivion meets Mass Effect. It has a lot of the stuff oblivion has, like being able to pick up tons of random stuff around the environment and steal stuff etc and like mass effect with its "pause the action and select a target" type thing.

I was thinking of trying Fallout 3. But have you actually played Mass Effect? I was pretty excited about it when I watched the featurettes. I also like the idea of sci-fi rpgs. I played Knights of the Old Republic and enjoyed that well enough.

Crackdown was fun yet short. Assassin's Creed i found to be boring and repetitive. Fable 2 is a renter cuz its just so short even if you do all the side quests.

The problem with having the systems you have streak is that their game selections are kinda lacking. The Wii is mostly shovel-ware and kid shit. The PS3 has few quality games that you cant just find on 360 or pc.

I'm kinda in the "bleh" position you are when it comes to games. I work in a video game store so i get to play pretty much everything right when it comes out and its been a long time since i've been impressed with a game.

I'd have to agree with wrexify and say that Left 4 Dead is extremely fun.. but its not on PS3 or Wii so that doesnt help streak.. unless he plays PC.

You could give street fighter 4 a rent. should keep you busy for a few days.
You can easily get 100+ hours of play time out of Fallout 3 or Oblivion.

The only things i can really recommend on Wii are Zelda, Metroid (kinda), and *MAYBE* rail shooters like House of the Dead 2/3/overkill Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles W/ a Wii Perfect Shot. Everything else is just total and complete garbage. I guess you can dive back in time and hit some of the old school downloadable games off the Wii like the various Zelda games and stuff like that.

I've played Mass Effect, yes. Its good for one play-through. There are parts that i felt could have been improved such as the driving parts and too much un-needed running around. The game felt a bit lacking.. there could have been a lot more to it.

I'd definitely go with Fallout 3 over Mass Effect. I would also go with Fallout 3 over Oblivion but i would say that one is more a matter of personal taste. The two games are very similar except in one you have guns and the other you have swords/magic.

Edit: Almost forgot. F.E.A.R. 2 isn't bad. Its hard to find a FPS that the controls for aiming are so sharp and accurate. The game is pretty tough, yet not to the point of throwing the controller at the wall. I dunno if you'll find it scary at all, i certainly didn't. I felt they tried too hard to freak you out. Seeing Alma is supposed to be somewhat frightening i guess, but every time i saw her i just thought "ok.. so that happened" or "ok so i guess i'm supposed to go in that direction".

As for Resistance 2.. i dunno.. it had some ok hype around it but after it came out i didn't hear many good things about it and got quite a few copies traded-in.

IF you go with either of those games i would go and pick it up used.. play it for a few days. Then when you're done with it or if you don't like it go and return it and get your $ back. Or rent it.

Wrexify 04-17-2009 07:57 AM

I almost forgot about GTA IV- I'd say it was the last game to really draw me in and keep my attention. Maybe I'll pick up The Lost & Damned as my next single player endeavor.

As braisler mentioned above, Crackdown is also tons of fun- kind of like GTA, but in a cartoon world on steroids.

high_jinx 04-17-2009 01:54 PM

I tried oblivion and it was really good lookin', but it ended up driving me back to WoW because i missed the interaction with other people. i haven't tried the newer ones, but every metal gear solid i've ever played was worth at least a playthrough for the story. i'm a fan of stealth games in general, so i could also reccomend any splinter cell, tenchu, or hitman game too.

crazybobmarley 04-17-2009 02:01 PM

Just browse the virtual console stuff on Wii. Don't just look forward.

There's plenty of Zelda, from the NES original, to the SNES one and then Ocarina for N64 which is by far the best. Majora's Mask is coming soon but the time limit really ruined that game for me.

Can't speak for PS3, but if it's backwards compatible one there's plenty of PS2 stuff to pick from. Shadow of the Colossus is an amazing game, ya really should experience it.

Still in Calgary, so I might have to look that up, I thought about that game, and looking online it sparked some mild interest.

I played a little Oblivion when I was house sitting for my boss, thought it was alright.

CrazyBobMarley...

My PS3 isn't backwards compatible... or else I'd be all over my FF10 again, that game pretty much (for me atleast) was the pinacle of RPG games this decade.

Thanks for the suggestions, I might rent some of these games to test drive them.

Wow, I was at Wal-mart last night and they had 4 copies of this game on clearance for $12 each. Maybe I should go back and get one.

streak_56 04-25-2009 12:31 PM

Valkyria Chronicles is sold out everywhere in the City...

but I bought Resistance 2, its definately better than the first although I need to find another game to get, I've already cleared it and am almost done with all the trophies.

blktour 04-26-2009 10:02 AM

Me personally I hated Resistance, Oblivion, F.E.A.R. I got into some Street Fighter 4 and I love it. My buddy just bought Resident Evil 5 and let me tell you. OMFG! This game is bad ass and takes some skill to get use to. It is 2 player co-op. the split screen is just like COD World at war. I love the fact that these zombies are smart and think and adapt to us. It makes it that much more challenging.

Rent it and let me know what you think.

Zeraph 04-26-2009 11:21 AM

OP I'm getting the same way. I figured it was just my age, getting older, kind of thing. But maybe the genre is really just in a dry patch.

MontanaXVI 04-26-2009 04:14 PM

Someone earlier mentioned Assassin's Creed. I was thrilled when I got this game shortly after it came out, but it quickly started collecting dust.

Too much of the same thing over and over got old very quick for me. I know others who played it and thought it was great but after about 2-3 days I was finished with it and never gave it another thought.

I'm noticing the repetitive nature of many games a lot more now.

tcp 05-08-2009 02:07 PM

The Last Remnant might hold you over until FFXIII and is also made by Square-Enix.
I agree their is a lot of confusion nowadays with traditional RPG and MMORPG co-existing.

Derwood 05-09-2009 04:48 PM

I can't get enough of Little Big Planet right now

Wrexify 05-12-2009 05:45 AM

I just found out about Prototype (360, PS3, PC) and I must say I'm excited.

BloodyBandage 05-14-2009 04:09 PM

If you like RPGS I can suggest some classics for Super Nintendo. Lufia is by far one of the best ever, with the ancient cave. FF3 of course, Breath of fire, etc. I don't really play many rpgs on the next gen systems because there isn't really that many that are great..Metal Gear Solid and GTA series is rpgish and worthy trying if you haven't played them yet as well.

I thought I was the only one who preferred FFX more than the others. Brother. Can I call you that?

Oh, and I too will suggest GTA IV (one of the best games ever made in my opinion). Uncharted wasn't terrible but not a buy. Go buy a used PS1 from a flea market and find a copy of Final Fantasy Tactics. Great game. And incredibly difficult.

biznatch 05-17-2009 11:18 AM

Prototype..hmm. That gives me the same first impression as the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo gave. You're basically this guy with disproportionately huge powers, and spend your hours going killkillkill. I would think the endless superpowers, 12 of bullets caught, and repetitiveness would make this game seem bland.
Don't get me wrong, the game seems impressive, in its design, look, scope and gameplay, but the end product could become generic and boring after a few days.
After reading quite a few reviews and opinions, and without having played either myself, Saints Row 2 seems to be centered around more actual fun and freedom than GTA4. I'm not sure I wouldn't buy GTA4, though, because I usually like the GTA series and the city seems very impressive, made Liberty City a real, living city.
