Xbox 360 Privacy Setings
My friends and I play online alot, but when we all get together we have to sit mostly silent in the muck that is the current games group chat. Usualy with every one else cussing up a storm yelling at eachother and whatnots.
Is there any way to get around this on the Xbox Live? I noticed that there are privacy settings for my profile that has three settings: Everyone, Friends Only, and Blocked. If I set this to Friends only will all those other people in the game chat be able to hear us and talk to us, or will we be in our own private channel of sorts? Is there any other way to have a group chat? We just want our own private chat room. This sounds like it would be a common issue but a search on the forum didn't come up with anything for me. Sorry if its a repost of any sort.

Unfortunately, no. The Privacy Settings control who can see your Profile, Gamerscore, Online Status, Games Played, and Friends list. It has nothing to do with private chatting. You can have up to 4 1on1 chats and switch between them, but it's a hassle.
I generally just play games that allow my friends and I to be on a team alone together against unknown opponents. That way, when the game starts (not in the lobby), I hear only their voices and only they hear mine. COD4 is that way. As for the lobbies? Mass muting, or wait the 30s until the game starts again. Most games also give the option of "Private Matches" - you'd have to only play against each other, but it's a way to guarantee the chat status is only you and your friends.

Ohh, so what exactly does the Voice and Text Option do for me? It has the Everyone, Friends Only, and Blocked... The 360 is pretty vague on it, heh.

I guess I'd never seen those settings.. hmm..
Per Microsoft: To configure your child's communications settings for Xbox LIVE: 1. Start from the System area of the Xbox Dashboard or—if you're using your Xbox 360 system for the first time—from the Initial Setup Complete screen. Select Family Settings, Xbox Live Controls and sign in using the password for your Windows Live ID. 2. Select Privacy and Friends, Voice and Text. 3. Choose one of the following settings: * Select Everyone to allow your child to communicate with anyone on Xbox LIVE using voice and text. * Select Friends Only to allow your child to communicate only with people on his or her friends list using voice and text. (Be sure to manage your child's friends list using the New Online Friends control.) * Select Blocked to prevent everyone from communicating with your child. Your child will still receive new friend requests. I'm not sure how this affects in game chat.. will keep looking.

Hmm, I'm interested in this now that I see it as well. No time to get on XBL right now though. JinnKai, I look forward to your report

I just tested this out with a friend of mine. He put on "Friends Only" I left "Everyone" on. I could hear everyone in the lobby room, he couldn't. And I was able to talk to him still. He kept asking if anyone could hear him, but no one else responded. I don't know if they were ignoring him or not, but so far it seems like that privacy setting works great for having a friends only chat!
