StarCraft

Anyone still play it? I know I do, but I use a couple different tags, wanted to know if anyone else played? I'm strictly a UMS player, not enough time to get good at melee ;p. Anyone else up for some Helms at times?

I used to play ladder with my friends back in junior high. We took it up again a couple months ago in honour of SC2. But we stopped.

The game itself is fun, but the lack of community outside of asia means that it's not particularly worth playing without some friends.

Yeah, SC is one of my favorite games of all time. My favorite setup is Big Game Hunters Free For All. I cant wait for SC2. Too bad they will probably keep pushing back the release date like Blizzard always does.

would you rather them release a game that isn't ready for release than have them push it back? I would much rather wait until it's ready to play. I hate when I buy games that I pretty much have to beta test.

I bought the Battle Chest whenever Starcraft 2 was announced because I had never played the game before. I got over the aged graphics really quick and started having some serious fun. The game is damn awesome for being as old as it is.

The main problem is that it's also hard as a motherfuck if you don't have a lot of RTS experience. I'm a pretty avid gamer, but I've pretty much quit playing about 2/3 through the Terrans section (first part of the game) because of the difficulty. I know that sounds pathetic, but I simply don't have time to spend 5+ hours on ONE mission in the game. It's quite annoying when you have to start a level over from scratch because you unforeseenly fucked up in the beginning.

It's "old-school" challenging, but that's not necessarily a good thing in some situations. I can only imagine how hard the game is towards the end.

FYI: I've never played RTS before.

I've always enjoyed the zero clutter, tvb maps.

NR20, but they always rush.

I pioneered the scout rush and the superbase. No one can scout rush like me.

Ya I think Starcraft was the first RTS I ever played as well way back when. It was difficult the first time through, but it never stopped being fun to me.

It certainly seems like its going to a lot more fast paced than starcraft 1. There's so many ways to instantly deploy units right onto the enemy, and terrain isnt as much of an issue anymore as it was in starcraft 1.

The game itself is fun, but the lack of community outside of asia means that it's not particularly worth playing without some friends.

There's a lot of community in SC - it's just decentralized. I have probably 20 friends on there that I hang out with almost daily, we're all part of the same community - the Helms one. There's dozens of communities, clans, etc. out there. You just gotta find one that's fun for you and has people that interest you.

SofaKing - do you ever play UMS? And my guess is 2 years until release. Usually it's 3-4 after announcement, but they are being more ambitious this time, they said.

Redjake - it really is based on experience. I had problems with the campaigns when I was 8. I beat both games in one day when I picked em up again last year. Granted, I knew the particular strats for each map, only a couple gave me any trouble. Also - try reading online a tiny bit to see if there's anything else you can pick up and play melee games against the computer. Once you can beat the computer in a melee game, you're on your way. Try taking on two at once then (if you're in BW, be ready for some early rushes ;p). If you're feeling ambitious, make it a 3v2 with one computer ally, then 4v2, then 5v2, then 3v1, etc.
Eventually, you can make your way onto online - don't worry if you get trounced even after all that prep - you learn much faster online (cause you see what everyone else has strats for).

Obiex - ever play UMS?

Btw my tag on Bnet is Burning_Sky_4H.

These days all i really ever play in Starcraft are maps that i have made myself :)

There are a few different scenario maps i played back in the day but i dont remember any of them. its been a long time.

The old maps i really enjoyed were the starship trooper maps. You would basically just defend your fort against wave after wave of zerg attacks, each one harder than the last. they took a lot of teamwork because usually each player would defend a section of the fortress wall with their units/structures.

Orchrist 09-08-2007 08:33 PM

I recall playing ALOT of Bloodbath 2v2's with a friend of mine. As far as UMS goes, I played alot of those, and most of them were 500 different versions of Smash TV. Man can't wait for 2 to come out.

Check out the SC2 forums, they're pretty lively.
