Masters of Doom Book Review

I started reading Masters of Doom and couldn't put it down. Finished it at about 5am. The story is well put together and talks about everything from ID to trashtalking. I always loved Doom but at that time I never got gaming magizines so I never really knew about the Carmack and Romero side of things. But it is really a interesting side of things. The book does a good job of not making them godlike while not destroying their image.

After I got down reading the story I installed Wolfenstien-3D, Doom1, and Commander Keen. =)

This book covers Romero's Daikatana escapades right? Think that could make for some interesting reading.

freedomdowntime 06-17-2003 07:29 AM

Yeah it goes through the making of that game and the leaving of the "Ion Eight."

where did you get the book from?
is it availble at local stores or did you get it online?

i read some transcripts at gamespy and sounded very interesting. You've intrigued me even more about it :)

Seriously, thanks for the review. I think I'll pick this up now as well.

It's on my wishlist!

I got it from A Barnes and Noble but it was hard to find because they stuck it in a hard to find location (it was next to word puzzle books and comic books so I ended up looking right over it at least ten times) So, you can order it online from either barnes and noble or amazon.

I really enjoyed it as well, though I do think the author was caught up in Romero's charm. If you compare the writing style he uses when discussing Romero to the ones he uses discussing Carmack, they're much more glowing for JR. Still, an interesting read on a pair of trendsetters.

I was looking for a review I could trust on that before I got it, and well, if a pair of TFPers are saying it's good, I'll take your word for it and pick it up.

I think what stopped him from being completely objective of Romono is that he didn't want to do what every gaming magazine had done. People arn't just good or evil. Also, a question to those who have read it, why does ID's site suck so much? I mean you have to search to find any info on doom 3. Where is the .PLAN FILE?!

read the "review" on pc gamer. so far, it seems the reviews are pretty good. prolly getting it soon

This is fucking awesome. Anyone remotely interested in games or game development should read it; the story on the development of a new popular culture in general is fascinating.

good stuff

i picked it up in a Dymocks bookstore ( i think it's an australian chain) in Melbourne.
:D

I've read a few chapters of it. I agree, it really is a good book. Reading the childhood that Romero's had almost made me want to forgive him for Daikatana....almost.

pocon1 05-02-2004 06:13 PM

I read the book last summer at the beach; borrowed it from the local library. It was pretty good, and interesting to read about the game developments of a couple of games I loved.

Bonesaw 05-02-2004 07:29 PM

Yeah I read it about 2 months ago....fucking great read for all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on in game development.

Plus it made want to go back and play Doom and Quake. some how though I mananged to skip Daikatana when it came out and I still don't see any reason to go back to it!

bemick 05-02-2004 08:52 PM

Read it when it came out and liked it. Wish there were more books like this covering game companies and people in that industry

NeverBorn 05-02-2004 09:58 PM

I want to read it
