ASCII Stereogram
Code:

Easy. As I was discussing with my wife the other day. I taught myself the ability to dissociate my visual fields when reading structural chemistry manuscripts in grad school. They often have three dimensional structures depicted as stereo-diagrams.
But I already have a life. Thanks. ;) |
You waited until grad school? I figured it out in elementary school, superimposing ceiling tiles over each other to see if the dots lined up. Unfortunately, I learned to do it by crossing my eyes, not relaxing my eyes, so I still have trouble with stereograms (unless I want to see them inside-out).
|
I can see them, I just have trouble seeing what they are...
|
It's a schooner!!!!
|
I've never been able to see stuff like this. It drives me nuts. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
|
The way I do it is to try and look beyond the screen - through it, and you'll notice that the images from each of your eyes kind of float towards one another - out of focus at first. Your eyes will want to return back to to normal focus, but just try and relax them. Then, once you've got the two R's lined up (probably still out of focus) try blinking a couple of times, and your eyes will try to sharpen things up. I don't know, that's kind of how I do it anyway.

I loved that whole scene. |
It kind of looks like guys walking??
|
Damn....that was downright devious...
|
Yeah, it's too small, it get's too googly around the edges for me too see what it is...
|
i hafta do these online just like the printed ones that used to be in the sundays comics page of the newspaper.
instructions as per how i learned to see these things: put your face real close to your monitor. stare for 20-30 seconds. don't move your eyes (don't change your focus) at all & slowly pull back away from the screen. you should gradually see the 3D aspect pop out. hope that works for those of you who haven't been able to see this stuff. works for me! ps. this one is very subtle compared to others i've seen. we need to round of some picture ones! |
Freaky...
There's a face right? |
lindseylatch and stonegrody, when you see those shapes that you are not able to make out, read the words on them.

ARGHH!!!! I got nuthin!!!
I tried Bern and Sticky's methods and I still can't see shit. Why do I feel like the butt of a cruel joke :hmm: |

Hint: Two groups of words will stand out in 3-D when you have it. |
This is weird; sometimes the block of text has a scrollbar, other times it doesn't. And, when the scrollbar is gone, it is much easier to 'solve' the text. (I run the experimental nightly Firefox builds, plus some random extensions, so it is probably on my end that something goes strange.)
|
Ouch! Very clever, I've never seen anything quite like that.
|
That's amazing. I don't understand how those words can pop out like that and the other words do not. Post more of them if you have them.
|
There we go, finally got it. I found I was able to see it if I focused on my own reflection in my monitor.
|
You guys are bastards
|
Wonderful effect. I was hoping for boobies, though. ;)
Is it made with a program, do you think? |
stonegrody, don't think of yourself as less of a person, just consider yourself very um "special!"
dude, TRY HARDER! for pete's sakes. you can do it. just have some patience. almost go crossed-eyed with your nose almost against your monitor. then slowly slowly slowly back away, NOT adjusting your focus whatsoever. go on do it now. quit being so silly. :D |
wait, they pop out? I always see them as pushed in...maybe that's why I have so much trouble with them...
Although I was able to read the message just fine...bastard...:p |

I used to be obsessed with these things when I was in high school. I'd save up my pocket money to go and buy the posters and I was really surprised when I went to university and people thought I was wierd for having them on my wall instead of cars, girls and bands.
Why didn't somebody show me this all those years ago? Why? |
thats pretty cool

Verdict: Cruel joke. :hmm: |
It's there stonegrody, but it's not very nice :) keep going, you'll get it!
|
AHA!! I've figured out the problem, since I've been playing with which view style to use. You need to view the ASCII in a fixed-width font. The Sandstorm style will allow that.
|
Don't know about that lemon, I'm using Sandstorm and I get fixed width - I posted it within [code] tags too in order to try and get it to display in fixed-width.
[Edit] Just re-read your post lemon - and yes, that explains it. |
OK, here's the list:
TFP v4.0: yes Hardwired: no GrassyKnoll: yes (but, the text box gets cut off horizontally for me) DarkCloud: yes Sandstorm: yes So, if you are using Hardwired, please switch to another theme in order to solve this stereogram. |
I can superimpose the image of one eye over the other with good accuracy anywhere I want, but despite my honest best efforts, nothing has ever emerged. Sadly, I cannot see stereograms :(
|
I miss these things, and I don't. See, after I view one for a while, my vision is slow to recover, and therefore I can't see crap on my monitor for quite a while. Guess I'll go outside now.
|
Anyone have any idea why those words pop out? what makes them so speical.. I would really like to know more about the theory behind it...
