labor in house of reps (though as pointed out earlier, libs would need to have a 15% swing to lose this seat)

i was in line at my local polling station this morning when Golden Showered Howard turned up (i live slap bang in the middle of his own electorate)... must be quite nervous if he's actually turning up to do his own polling because he's never shown up on election day before.

funnily enough he arrived, power-walked through the little crowd outside the church hall for 3 minutes, got heckled by the NOT HAPPY JOHN PARTY then pissed off in his convoy of 3 big white comm-cars and had the cops/security hurry after him... bet that summed up some valuable votes.

how did i vote?

well thats my secret... it is secret ballot after all...

but let me tell you, that sad little Christian Taliban Party, oh sorry, i meant the Fundamentalist Family First Party has some pretty fucking DISGRACEFUL policies, including burning witches, oh sorry, i meant lesbians, and closing down all bottle shops, brothels, bars, pubs, and mosques... but there was someone lower down on my ballot paper...

Well, I was disgusted to find the only political representation at my local polling booth to be Libs and Family First. Granted, many of my neighbors have bigger houses and better cars than I, and the polling booth was at a girls' private school, but for the ALP (the party I was planning to vote for) to have no volunteers harassing people with how to vote cards was unacceptable. It was almost as if they had resigned themselves to the fact they had no chance, based on the local demographic.

I raised the point with a polling booth lackey who pointed to a nearby rubbish bin and suggested I rummage through for an ALP how to vote card. I took him up on the offer and luckily found one. At this stage, I was very close to leaving in protest and voting where I usually do - the local public primary school where there has been no shortage of ALP volunteers in previous election.

Later, I drove my girl out to a sleep over and made a point of stopping at aforementioned primary school to express my dissatisfaction at the slackness of the ALP at my closest booth. They said they'd had problems getting volunteers. Meh. I still voted for them, anyway.

I voted Labour, but for my local area it doesnt really matter as its so Labour heavy that half the labour voters could boycott the elections and they would still win it.

That's a matter of opinion whiteox.

I think it's a shame Labor lost and Australia rewarded Howard and his party.

They reward wealth, not effort; they lie to the Australian public; they have no sense of social justice; they are lackeys to the US and their health and education policies are unjust.

But the people have spoken. I think they were duped, but I also believe most people simply didn't feel Latham was experienced enough. If Beazley was still leading Labor, he'd be getting ready to move into the Lodge.

Oh well.

Too bloody right. A lot of the people I know who _did_ vote Liberal would have voted Labour if it was Beazley running instead. Latham is nowhere near as good as the fat man was.

What is really worrying me is that it looks like the Liberals will be one seat off a majority in the Senate.

In my opinion the lack of a clear majority in the Senate in the last term has definately had a benificial moderating effect.

Yeah, im pretty sad about the senate situation too. They can pass whatever they want. The rise of that new right wing religious party has come as a shock aswell. Its always been my opinion that religion and politics shouldnt be mixed. On sunday after the election a part of me felt like 'sucked in low income australia'. Im from the seat of Lindsay, one of the lowest socio economic areas in western sydney, yet somehow labor heartland has become red neck paradise. A recent poll revealed that in the whole of Australia, its my seat that is most in fear of terrorist invaders. Its really absurd seeing as where i live. I do a bit of casual teaching at the state schools in my area, and some of them are like ghettos. Yet still the constitiuants in my area opted for the party that wants to continue gov funding to those elite private schools who already have 3 swimming pools and manicured ovals. Anyway, lets hope things go ok.

Speaking of Garrett, did anyone see The Panel last night when they showed Ray Martin crossing to their reporter at Kingsford Smith? Martin refers to Midnight Oil as Midnight Express. What a fucking moron.

Slimshaydee, there is an article on crikey.com about how the Murdoch press led a total smear campaigne upon the greens in the weeks leading up to the elsection. It talks about how we need a free and independent press if we are gonna have a vibrant democracy. Thought ya might be interested.

I voted Lib, but only because I didn't want Oz to be Labor both Federally and State.

And because Pauline wasn't running here

i was removed from the elecTroll they claim that there were no records of my voting scince turning 18 i voted every year and got pretty pissed at this especially scince most people i know dont want to vote so much for compulsary voting or could it be some conSPYrecy towards my political views they reminded me on the phone "that this conversation was being recorded" and "would be refered to a superviser" so they were also taking away my freedom of speech then i was told it is an offence to abuse a federal officer(with my limited vocaulary used a few abstract slang words common to australian speech)and my freedom was also at risk what now i was later reminded that i wasnt an australian citerzen id been here scince i was 4 some 30+ years and my right to be here was questioned i had a 4 year fight to get resident status now my only option is to get citernship but the country i came from no longer exists due to be ousted from the commonwealth and removed from the un hmmmmmmm freedom at what price on the bright side they have nowhere to deport me to lol

Maybe they'll dump you in some nameless refugee camp and record your cries of innocence for training purposes. Or let you live in an airport lounge like what happened to some guy in America. (I think it was in America)... (It HAD to be in America)!

Sorry mate.. it was America that made the cheesy Tom Hanks movie about it.

The actual guy lives in Heathrow Airport (London), I'm pretty sure.
