regional accents and stuff
 

When i went down the south coast of NSW recently i noticed that people were talking a bit differently than from where im from. I guess this is natural in a country as huge as ours. They used the term 'lad' a whole heep when talking about boys. I also noticed a few other little peculiarities in the whole talking communicating thing. For instance, when someone was listening to you talk they'd say 'yeah right' alot and nod. From my experience Queenslanders are a bit like bushmen from NSW, they generally talk a bit slower than most, and have a bit more of the traditional aussie drawl. What have you noticed?

Oh yeah, and you get a lot of this in Penrith.

I've noticed that people in certain cities (say sydney vs. melbourne) have different words for stuff.

The one I can think of right now (although there are others) is a mate of mine coming back from Sydney (a couple years ago) and saying "Chucks" for "chicks" and "crew" for "group of friends". Now you hear "crew" around here often.. but back then it was brand new.

Yeah, language is often dependent on region, thank god we're not in england! ;)

As far as accents go, it seems south australians seem to have more of a pseudo-posh accent, northern nsw folk seem to have a bit of a drawl, and apparently people from sydney can tell people from newcastle by their accent, but I can't. ;)

The cultural customs can be quite different from state to state too. Apparently up in Brisbane most people do bucket bongs, where as down south we are almost exclusively bottle bongs. Interesting stuff.

Gee, talk about your kick-in-the-teeth! Unfortunately also true.

People around here generally have really thick accents. Young blokes also tend to use a lot of ficticious words unique to their group/footy club. We also tend to call people 'old mate' and 'big rocks' more than most as well...

For interests sake, bucket bongs are big around here too... fuck that!

i've noticed the Queensland drawl... but with respect to Meri, i don't think its too close to NSW country blokes.
i remember when i was in California a few years back, some shop assistant couldn't believe i was Australian because he figured all Aussies spoke in that qld drawl.

I live in Synnee and the most common accent is irish (Back packers) and chinese. (well vietnamese and hong kong)...perhaps its where I live but there really inn't such a thing as an Aussie accent around here anymore

Ive been told that everyone up in NT call everyone "Bloke" instead of "mate". Bloke just doesnt have the same effect.

Yeah I live in England and far too many bloody accents around. Newcastle accent is quite hard to understand, Birmingham, Manchester & Liverpool accents are also very annoying. I have always lived in Nottingham and one of the things I still can't understand is why some people call others 'duck' As in 'a up duck' which is a greeting. I kid you not, bloody weird.

mizone bottles are the new champions... btw, that rumor about qld'ers and buckets is only partly true.

Thats because there are *alot* of aboriginals there, and they've become accustomed to saying bloke. Its quite cool really, me and my friends use bloke often, just to be stylish. Also, in Perth, accents change suburb to suburb. Head to the eastern hills, and its a lot more relaxed language than the norther suburbs.
