Land of the Dead

...uh, holy shit.

The release date has been moved from Oct. 31 to JUNE 24!!!

I couldn't believe it... I don't think the studios have pulled such a surprising move. Usually they push the stuff back, but release it way ahead of time??

Nice.

I just noticed this too while browsing into the future at IMDB. 6 months is a pretty long time to leave it on the shelf if it's fully finished, why not bump the date up?

Yeah this has pretty much come out of nowhere for me too. As long as Romero had final cut on this then I'm confident that it'll be decent. I'm worried that this was moved up suddenly because some distro had a slot to fill and gave Romero a "finish in a week or it'll never come out" ultimatum.

My two biggest fears about this film:
1. after 28 Days Later and the Dawn remake I'm worried it might feel like a regression to return to Romero's original plodding zombies
2. Romero continues on his "thinking zombie" plot begun in earnest with Day of the Dead(which wasn't all that good honestly). The beauty of zombie flicks post-Romero is the arbitrary nature the antagonist zombies. Even the "when hell is full the dead will walk the earth" legend we're left to think this is the completely naieve attempt of the surviving humans to understand the complete paradigm shift they're caught in. If zombies are given a capacity for rational thought then they're reduced to simple ghoulish vampires.

'ckin' awesome. Sure, I'm slightly worried about what Locobot shot forward, but I'm mostly just excited to see it.

By the way, the unrated trailer is awesome compared to the tv spots. Mostly the same footage, with gore thrown in. Wonderful.

Is there something incredibly special about this movie? When I saw the commercial I just thought it was another dumbass zombie movie. What makes this one so great.

The king of the zombie genre directed it after 20 years. He is the one responsible for the dead trilogy (night, dawn, day) and he had I believe a 15 million dollar budget for this film. George Romero + 15 million + Zombies = potential for greatest zombie movie ever.

Well, i saw it, and i gotta say, after 20 some years of waiting, I'm left with kind of an "eh" feeling about it. While its definitely the worst of the 4, the simple fact that its brings gore back to the horror genre puts it above 99.9% of all other horror flics in my opinion. But the stroyline and the zombie action just didnt have the right feel about it, a completely different vibe to me then the others. I don't wanna give anything away, mainly cuz Im too lazy to use the spoiler tag, so I'll just say its an above average gory zombie flic that wasnt worth the 20 year wait.

I hope it's nothing like Day of the Dead. I just rented that last week, and it sounded like someone spliced in the soundtrack from "Big."

just watched it

it was alright. not a bad sequel, not exactly disappointing. but not spectacular.

i don't want to ruin it for others, but i had some problems with some of the things that happen (i'm not gonna be specific). the end was left wide open with plenty of breathing room for a sequel.

I liked it a lot. I like the way, like Night, Dawn and Day, it isn't just about zombies, it's a sharp satire of some aspect of Western culture. Night was about racism. Dawn was about rampant consumerism. Day was about the spiraling military-industrial complex. Land is about classism.

Plus there's plenty of gore, and several very nice shots, and several good one-liners from Dennis Hopper.

Just saw this last night and I loved it. These movies are unique because after Night, it's no longer about the initial outbreak of zombies. By now, everybody knows how to deal with the zombies and they're not all freaking out all the time.

oh and mexicanonabike, it's alot of different things in different zombie movies, but in Romero's, it's a virus. Or radiation from a satillite from venus (see Night of the Dead).

Actually, I thought it wasn never really explained, and I kind of liked it that way. Romero's zombie movies have been all about the characters, not particularly the zombies, and that's why his films are so good. It doesn't matter why the zombies are here, it just matters that they are here, and how are you going to deal with it? What I remember from Night is that the Venus probe thing was just a theory spouted off on the radio.

Either way, they never really go into details about the cause of the zombies because, really, who cares?

The characters in all 3 movies continually speculate about why zombies walk the Earth. The most commonly used, and most soically critical, the way Romero likes it, is that when there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth. It all fits in with his commentary on modern America, which is what these movies are all about anyway.

Well yeah, sometimes I mix up those zombie movies.

I'd have to go with the whole not enough room in hell idea, it's more solid than any scientific evidence.

Anyone who likes good zombie stories should check out the comic Walking Dead. The first couple of story arcs are available in trade paperback. Like the best zombie movies, it isn't about the shock factor, but how the people involved are dealing with this new world. Featured characters are regularly added and killed off, and there are some truly wicked twists now and then, such as when melting snow drips off of a sign, revealing important information that was written there. Those reading the comic will know that to which I am referring.

I'm gonna have to agree there. I just recently picked up the first trade and I really liked it. The only thing stopping me from going out and buying the next two is that I know I already got them as a birthday gift next time I make the trip back home to SA. Good stories, strong characters, and great art. Oh yeah, and there are zombies in it, too.

Sadly, I compared LotD to The Walking Dead and found it lacking. Unfair of me to compare a 90 movie to three trade paperbacks, as the comics have alot more time to cultivate characters and draw you in, but there you have it. Every once in awhile in the movie I found myself wondering why a character was doing somthing. 90 minutes didn't seem like nearly enough time. Didn't Daw and Day run closer to two hours? I think I was more attached to the characters in the Dawn remake (I can't even believe I'm saying that!)

I guess what I'm really trying to say is I agree with Gilda and El Pollo, The Walking Dead rocks.
