Just saw this latest piece from Bill Murray,

what an amazing film featuring black humour and humanity, how come this film didn't get any press. It was so good

This film didn't get any press because the press is ignorant to quality. Life Aquatic is what other comedies should strive to be. I've never laughed so hard in my life. William Defoe is funnier then I ever hoped.

yeah, i haven't heard much about this movie anywhere.

jeff goldblum, fresh off of a "dirty old man" stint on crank yankers, was also good for a few laughs. and knockout ned is apparently a guitarist.

i thought it was a great piece of work, too, but certainly not of The Royal Tenenbaums' caliber. Still, should get some kind of award -- it's probably the most unique movie of the year!

I was bored and disappointed. Since I didn't like Tenenbaum's either, then I guess that genre is not my cup of tea.

I didn't like this one as much as Rushmore or The Royal Tennebaums but it was still an excellent film...

It received a fair amount of press up here in Canada... just not the kind you get from a big budget piece of crap.

I absolutely loved this movie. I just love Bill Murray's sense of humour. I only saw a few previews and knew I wanted to see it! I agree it needed more press, not sure why it didn't. Go see it.

I liked this movie very much, and am happy to see the roles Bill Murray has been taking on these past few years. He's showing that comedy can be real, not contrived.
I also agree with willravel on Defoe's performance. Just his appearance onscreen in this movie was hilarious. He's good at comedy and I'd like to see him do more.

On a side note, when my wife and I were leaving the theater, we were walking behind 2 guys who had just seen it also. Their conversation went a bit like this:

Spoiler: guy1: That movie sucked.
guy2: Yeah it did. The whole movie was about getting that shark, and he didn't even kill it.
guy1: Yeah, that was stupid. Bill Murray used to be funny. Now he's making suck-ass movies.
guy2: Yeah, why can't he go back to making good movies like "Stripes" or something like that?

My wife and I just looked at each other. They just didn't get it.

Has anyone seen Wes Anderson's first film Bottle Rocket?
I have never heard of it unitl recently reading an article about him. Is it worth checking out?

My roomate saw it and said it rocked, and I respect his opinion. But really, its Bill Muray, how can it go wrong?

Back on topic: I really enjoyed the movie. More than Bottle Rocket, but less than Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums.

I was a bit disappointed in "Life Aquatic." I really love Wes Andersons movies (Bottle Rocket being my favorite) but this one seemed a tad off. Almost as if he was trying too hard to make a quirky movie and it settle just off kilter. I'm not saying its a bad flick, but my least favorite of Wes Andersons movies.

I think the movie would have been funnier too if the freaking trailers hadn't given away just about every good joke.

glad i didn't see any trailers. yes, bottle rocket is a good movie, provided you enjoy wes anderson. it was the first of his films that i saw. introduces a few wes anderson conventions, and owen wilson does a good job in one of his first major roles.


and, uh, i'm not quite sure what to make of this, but i can't say i noticed it the first time around. another lowkey joke?

I loved it. Rushmore is probably still my favourite, but I thought Life Aquatic was great.

Bottle Rocket is very good. Funny movie. I wouldn't rate it as high as Rushmore or TRT, just because it doesn't quite have the personality the other two have. But, very funny. Better than alot of other movies out there. I'm surprised that harldly anyone seems to have seen it. I haven't seen The Life Aquatic yet, because I'm in a small town and it isn't playing around here.

We watched Bottle Rocket in my English Literature class my freshmen year at college. We had to write a character analysis on one of the characters in the movie. Good movie.

I just saw it this week, and it left me with mixed feelings. It seems to me a conscious effort on Wes' part to get quirkier with each film, and I think it is taking away a bit from the movie. A fine line between clever and gimicky imo. Wes needs to develop a theme outside of the emotional addendum of a father figure for his characters. He has gone 4 for 4 in his movies with this theme - I think we get it!

I enjoyed Murry's performance very much and William DeFoe was great, but I didn't think Goldblume did as well as I had hoped for.

I rate it a B.

I havn't seen "Life Aquatic" but am looking forward to it. I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Lost In Translation". Yes, Murray was in "Rushmore" and "TRT" first but he really established himself with "Translation". I have 7 maternal aunts and uncles and phrases from "Caddyshack" were commonplace when I was growing up, therefore, I always equated Murray with Karl and dumb comedy (not to mention "Stripes" and the "Ghostbusters" movies and, oh,yeah, "What About Bob?").

Although in "Translation" there was definately comedy (Murray thinking an arm movement couldn't possibly be what the Japanese director wanted for all the language spoken), there was quite alot of serious acting happening on Murray's part.

While not near on the same level, Murray's transitioning into more dramatic roles reminds me of Tom Hanks going from "Busom Buddies" and "Splash" to "Castaway", "Saving Private Ryan" or "Forrest Gump".

I can only hope that Murray is coming into his second wind as an actor because his talent is one that shouldn't be wasted. Not to mention, he's a pretty good and goofy amature golfer!

I thought Life Aquatic was the best anderson film thus far. The first time I saw it, i was definately anticipating gimicky (I loved TRT and rushmore, but was basically expecting more of the same), and left the theatre rather ambivelant. However, I sometimes have to think about a movie for a while before making my final judgement. I saw it again, and it was beautiful (the scene where they are showing the boat construction, and its kind of like a giant dollhouse with a lot of siamese cats was awesome) AND contained a successful, cohesive plot. My only complaint is that ALL movies can do without three legged dogs, because they just make me feel sad.

And in my opinion, bottle rocket just isn't as good as everyone told me it would be.

I appologize if this post contained any spoilers. But I concider the three legged dog thing more of a warning than a spoiler.

This just came out in Australia and i thought it was very entertaining Spoiler: i also loved the end when he finally found the shark, played over with sigur ros :)

Anyway, i was wondernig if anyone knows the quirky electronic music they played a few times. it came on when Bill Murray (steve zissou) was talking about how they adjusted their diving helemts to allow music to be played through? and then when he was doing some editing for a sequenece of his movie later on.

also it was suprising to see that the guitarist was playing all kinds of David Bowie songs in different languages - brazillian/portuguese i think?

I loved the music and the graphics (those were a surprise!), but I was a little disappointed when I left. I guess I expected it to have dark humor, but not such a dark plot. Maybe if I had read up on Jacques Cousteau before seeing it, I wouldn't have been so surprised by some of the events. In any case, Bill Murray, Willem Defoe and Owen Wilson were gold.
