dawn of the dead

Came out today on dvd...anyone getting it?

Rdr4evr 10-26-2004 01:36 PM

I'm definately going to get it, first I have to get the ultimate edition 4 disc original Dawn of the Dead.

sadistikdreams 10-26-2004 02:17 PM

It's rad.
But still.
Dawn of the Dead 04 < Dawn of the Dead 78

joeyaz 10-26-2004 04:40 PM

Just picked up the widescreen version recently. I have not had a chance to get the older Dawn of the Dead on DvD it is one of my favorites I first seen it when I was like 10 and it made an impression.

Fremen 10-26-2004 07:42 PM

I'm gonna rent it first.

m0rpheus 10-26-2004 10:02 PM

Maybe eventually but what I'm really waiting for is SHAUN of the Dead.

Reese 10-27-2004 12:38 AM

I thought it was a great remake. It was a little slow but if I remember correctly so was the original. It would probably be a better movie than the original if it had been made 20 years ago. :)

m0rpheus, I just saw that Shaun of the Dead is going to be out before Xmas. :)

Ecto 10-27-2004 05:00 AM

I liked the new one. But it wasn't nearly as good as the original.

grendel 10-27-2004 05:38 AM

i loved the new one, but the original is a classic. that said, i'm gonna be getting the new one in the next couple of days (didn't get a chance to go yesterday). as for shaun, i STILL haven't managed to drag myself out to the only theater in my city that's showing it. i guess if i end up missing the run, i can always pick up the DVD...

inharmony 10-27-2004 05:42 AM

Dawn was good, liked original better (just love the oldies)...Shaun was great!

Kostya 10-27-2004 06:05 AM

I'm sorry, but the Original will always be better than the remake.

1. George Romero, the Godfather of the zombie film.
2. Tom Savini, the Godfather of Gore.
3. The seventies

KinkyKiwi 10-27-2004 07:44 AM

ugh..dawn of teh dead was okay but i went to see shawn of teh dead and it was so boring i almost fell asleep...i mean they attack the zombies with records...and i dunno..i know it wasnt meant to be a horror movie and was supposed to be funny..but only 3 parts were funny..at least to me..the theatre was empty and teh humor was trying too hard

crossova 10-27-2004 11:15 AM

i only seen parts of the original...didnt really do anything for me. i liked this one b/c the zombies were so much better in here and i liked the setting

Kostya 10-27-2004 05:03 PM

Bah never!

The new one was far too preoccupied with making the zombies 'realistic', the original was more about character, wit and self parody, that's what made it so damn good. I mean in the remake, the zombies are these like really fast, terrifying creatures, in the original they were essentially a giant satire of the American public, slow, plodding, vacant, at the mall just because. (I'm not saying that all Americans are like this or anything, niether is Romero really, I mean he's simply paying out that particular archetype) who are treated somewhat contemptuously by the major characters, who punch and shoot them etc with glee. It was far more enjoyable since it wasn't perfect realism and never tried to be. Plus, the undertones of rampant misanthropy are delightfully dark and funny.

CSflim 10-28-2004 03:44 AM

If "Dawn of the Dead 04" wasn't called "Dawn of the Dead" but rather "Zombies Attack the Shopping Mall", would it have have encountered so much contempt?

I am a big fan of the original Dawn; it's a classic, but I also enjoyed the "remake". It doesn't come close to the original, but it doesn't really try to...it is really an entirely different movie, just with the same name; the characters are different, the plot is different, the tone is different...the zombies are different. It just took the basic concept: small group of survivers seek refuge in a shopping mall from an outbreak of zombieism and makes a completely different movie.

I have heard rumours that the original screenplay was not a remake of the Dawn, and took place is some generic warehouse or something, but due to marketing reasons, the title was changed to Dawn of the Dead and was relocated to a shopping mall. I would not be surprised if this was true; all of the events in the movie would work equally well in a location other than a mall (contrast this to the original where the mall was an intergral part of the film).

i really agree with this (and have said it myself several times, although not in this forum). i have a hard time calling it a remake, because for the most part it is different. this flick and 28 Days Later have been among my favorites of the last couple of years.

still don't have my copy of DotD04, but i'm planning to pick it up tonight so i can watch it this weekend.

Seen both old and new, own them both, love them both. My only prroblem is with the marketing of this new DVD release. As far as I can tell, nothing has been changed during the actual feature film part of the DVD to warrant it as a Director's Cut. All the "added footage" that was advertised was the post production , home movie type films and deleted scenes that are completely serperate from the feature. Now, I was completely happy with the version in the theatres, and this doesn't really change that, but I am a little upset that I was duped into thinking there was anything actually added to the film, and not just bonus features that have been on plenty of other DVD releases that didn't claim to be a brand new Director's Cut.

Are you sure that you got the Director's Cut? You sure you weren't ripped off? The directors cut is genuinely a new cut of the film and not just a DVD with bonus features.

A thread on imdb.com discusses the changes:

crossova 10-28-2004 11:36 AM

I see i am the only 1 who favors the action packed remix to the original version.

Nikilidstrom 10-28-2004 12:22 PM

I don't mean to sound insane, but is there any chance that I saw at least a partial director's cut in the theatres? Many of those changes that he speaks of in that link you provided I swear were in the theatrical version I watched. There are a few scenes that he mentioned had changed that I didn't pick up on while watching the DVD though, mostly extended conversational pieces.

Or maybe I just have a very over active imagination, who knows. Either way, I still love the flick.

That's really weird! I guess it's possible...or maybe you just are insane! :D

grendel 10-28-2004 02:45 PM

finally picked up my copy! :D

Bionic Monkey 10-28-2004 08:48 PM

I hadn't seen the original Dawn of the Dead until shortly prior to the release of the remake, so maybe I just didn't have the nostalgia factor amping up the quality for me. I found it to be plodding and poorly acted. I understand the subtext of what Romero was attempting, and applaud him for it, but I just did not enjoy his film.

This wouldn't be the first time I have been accused of that. However, I did talk to my buddy whom I had seen Dawn with in the theatre, and after he watched the DVD, he had the same reaction and memories as I did. So if I am insane, at least I'm not alone :)

Rdr4evr 10-29-2004 09:14 PM

I just picked up the directors cut tonight, gonna go watch now.

almostaugust 11-03-2004 10:05 AM

Cant wait to get my hands on this fucker. Im sure romero would have been happy with this one despite its failings. It was still heeps scary. Cant wait.
