Mahler Is A Little Slow - LOTR

I just saw the DVD today (ROTK) and I have always disliked the fact the parting shot is on a door or a closing door if you like. I finally hit me that the entire story begins with Gandalf (or even the dwarves) knocking on Bilbo's door. A smarter, more intelligent man would have picked up on this sooner.......like the first time they saw the movie. Oh well, I guess I am a little slow on the uptake.

P.S. To reiterate my protest: The LOTR did not receive a single acting award. Granted I think many of the performance were extremely inconsistent and varied (Frodo in TT, Aragorn in ROTK, etc.) but there was one performance that was phenomenal throughout and was rarely noticed: Sean Austin as Samwise. The fact that he did not receive any type of award or notice is absolutely criminal. Here endth the bitching and moaning except to say one more thing. (Sorry). I am really quite put out that the series is now over with. There is nothing to look forward to, at least on this scale and magnitude, anymore. Seeing it every Christmas vacation was a family/friend tradition. I will miss the anticipatition and the conversations over casting, storylines, etc. Now I am really done. Honest.

I'm really looking forward to picking up this DVD the next chance I get (of course I'll be buying the EE for Xmas too, but I need my fix NOW!). I really agree with your observation about Astin not winning any awards, he had solid preformances throughout all 3 films (although I felt that it got a little cheesy during certain parts of TT and ROTK). I also think that although the screenplay writers butchered the role, the actor playing Denethor did an outstanding job. I hope we get to see more of him in the EE.

Dude I know exactly how you feel... It's over, and it makes me sad... but at least we still have the extended ROTK to look forward to... and then there will always be the memories

I completely agree that Sean Astin was robbed for a nomination for ROTK. His performance in that movie was phenominal.

See, the thing is with movies like this is that, people often fail to see beyond the grand story and great graphical achievements to find the great, great actors who make the story happen. I feel that most of the cast not getting any kind of nod for acting achievement was complete crap, but it happened anyways.

The cast did get the acting ensemble award from SAG.

I could have sworn that Sir Ian McKellan got an award.

Guess not.

For those of you jonesing for more - isn't Peter Jackson negotiating for the rights to The Hobbit?

I believe so, but I don't think Christopher Tolkien (JRR's son) is going to sell the movie rights to it.

He got a Best Supporting Actor nomination after the Fellowship.

I really think he did a great job- filling the shoes left open by Tolkien wasn't an easy task, and he did the best job that could have been done, imo.

Sean Astin also did an outstanding job, as did the actors playing Merry and Pippin. I was also very impressed with the casting for Galadriel. I don't think anyone could have looked more elfin than she.

The other actors in the ensemble also did great jobs, but those really stuck out in my mind.

Regarding the Hobbit... it looks like negotiations are back on again... I heard that New Line is in the process of trying to sort it all out so Jackson can make the Hobbit once he's finished with King Kong.

Fingers crossed.

I disagree. If anything, Astin ruined the series by injecting far too much homosexual tension towards Frodo. Even when he was standing beside his new wife in ROTK he couldn't let up on the "Take me now, Frodo!" looks. Surely I am not the only one to see this.

Well, you ARE gay, so maybe you're just projecting.

Seriously, I concur. It was distracting.

Well, if you read the books carefully... there IS a lot of homosexual tension that sam projects... I picked up on it the first time I read the books... at the end I was like "Wow, Sam got married? I thought he was gay!"

Christopher Tolkien isn't all that bad, really. He got the Silmarillion together and published, which I am very thanful for. Even though I liked Jackson's films, CT has a point -- the world his father created is often best left to the imagination alone.

I agree, the books were basically written for him, and he has been submersed in his father's papers for many years, so it must be difficult to let go, and allow films which are notexactly the vision of his father be made. That said, I enjoyed the movies as well, and would like to see Jackson and Co have a run at The Hobbit .
