Party Monster
I don't know if anyone saw the Barbara Walters interview with Macaulay Culkin the other day, but he's returned to acting in the movie Party Monster.
For those who aren't aware, he took a break from acting after the whole deal with his dad - made him very jaded as far as the industry is concerned. But he's sure not wasting his time getting back into it. Party Monster is a movie about something I, frankly, know nothing about, but it seems fairly interesting. Macaulay plays a guy named Michael Alig who was really big in the underground New York rave scene in the early 90's and ended up murdering one of his friends. The movie is absolutely over the top (as was the reality so I understand) and it should be interesting seeing Macaulay play a homosexual, drug using, murderer. Anyone know anything about this movie or plan on seeing it? Right now it is out in LA, NY, and Chicago, and will have its world release at the Sundance Film Festival in January. well, i just watched the preview and i'm interested. i don't think i'll be storming the theatre to see it, but i'll definitely wanna catch it while it's on it's run. i think i actually heard about the real story behind the movie, so it'll be interesting to see how it is all portrayed.

Yeah I'm curious to see if Macaulay Culkin can do anything other than foil bungling burglars from robbing his house. Oh wait I just remembered... he did play Ritchie Rich.

There's a great documentary on the "Party Monster" story. If I remember, I saw that Wolfe Video is releasing the DVD in October. If you are at all interested in the story behind it all, it's a great documentary. Bizarre, but really interesting.

Being a X-drug addict/raver/dancer/space-hippie...
This story was very well known among the kids in the scene. It's been a legend for many years as to why you should never trust anyone that does drugs... which we all did. I am looking forward to seeing the movie in hopes that they give the story some realism instead of making it all Hollywood. I'm sure the theaters will be filled with cats like me wondering how much they got right and how much they made up for the sake of plot points.

I saw a documentary about this on A&E at one point. Don't remember whether it was a Biography or not, but it was very informative and very intriguing. I've been itching to see the movie ever since I heard it was being made; I hope it gets at least some sort of minor release here in Houston.

The movie is somewhat of an underground hit around here... most everyone I know has seen it and enjoyed it.
It's totally over the top, just like the lives of James St James and Michael Alig.. the acting isn't the best (though it grows on you)... the whole movie is filmed in such a way that you more or less feel like you're on this rocket ship to FaBuLouSnEss with them, shooting into a drug laden oblivion.. it's not a documentary, but it's alot of fun, and you walk away from it feeling like Macauley and Seth really are Michael and James, and like you were a part of it.. or could of been... (even though you were probably sitting at home masturbating) for me, being a party promoter and dj, I found the movie inspiring in one sense. any crazy kid with enough motivation can be king of the world... and the movie was a bit of a reality check. on a related note.. James St James and Michael Alig threw a party way back in the day called BLOODFEAST, and, in tribute to the wonders of the original NY club kids, my friends and I are throwing a party based off of it, called, Disco BLOODFEST 3000 the original bloodfeast flyer and party pics are here: **http://members.tripod.com/LATINPHUNK.../disco2000.htm the site for our party is: http://www.bloodfeast.org (I'm rather proud of my recreation of their design, don't you think?) everyone's invited, of course! and remember... I wasnt expecting much going into the film, and coming out I did actually end up enjoying it. There isnt really anything special technically about the movie, but the story is just so engaging that you dont mind. The acting is a bit rough, but that too can be overcome. I wouldnt really watch it more than once or twice, as I cant stand the pure annoyance factor of the characters, but it was a fun diversion.

I haven't seen the movie, but my initial reaction when I saw it on the shelf at Blockbuster was, "Wow, how low has Macaulay Culkin sunk." I have read a few reviews of it since then, so its not as hopeless for Mr. Culkin as I originally thought. I have a lot of movies to catch-up on (rent), so it will probably not be seen for another while.

Party Monster was an incredible movie. I think we all knew Macauley had a dark side in him after The Good Son, and he was actually quite brilliant as club-kid/murderer Michael Alig. Throw in some great performances by Seth Green and Dylan McDermott, and a cameo by Marylin Manson (playing a drag-queen) and you've got a damn fine movie.
Now all Macauley can hope to do is catch up to his little brother Kieran's acting prowess. |
