Zombies!
Nothing scares me more than a good zombie flick. If you are a serious watcher of zombie films, you'll know that there are even different kinds of zombies.
For example, George Romero zombies (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead) are slow, stupid, strong and can't talk. They also seem to enjoy chomping down on the whole person. Arm, leg, head, doesn't matter to them. Dan O'Bannon zombies (Return of the Living Dead, et al) are fast, smart (they can actually ambush people) and can talk. Also, they only want to eat the brain. "More brains!" they yell. Alot. While I think "Return" is a damn funny and inventive movie, I have to stick with Romero and his slow-walking, slow-witted, zombies. They're the one's who brought me to this dance, so I feel like I gotta waltz with 'em. There's definetely a soft spot in my heart for those flesh eating guys and gals. So, which do you prefer? Romero? O'Bannon? Is there some other zombie flick that's claimed a place in your heart?

I don't know if you would consider <I>...28 Days Later</I> to be a zombie flick, but I do and those zombies were awesome. What with all the blood spurting puking action. That and the way they would howl as they ran attacking the humans.
Top notch baby. "Dad you killed Zombie Flanders. Flanders is a what now?"

Dammit! One of the few movies I really wanted to see this summer and I haven't gotten to! I've heard much debate on if it's a zombie movie or not. From what I've heard, it sounds like one to me.
It's long gone from the theatres around here, so I'm hoping it'll be on DVD before Christmas.

Romero is the best of the best. I am a huge zombie movie/book fan, and I noticed your avatar earlier (the star zombie from Day of the Dead ). The slow moving zombies are a lot more scary to me.
Troublebot, did you hear the news that they are already filming the remake of Dawn of the Dead? I'm not sure if I like that they are remaking that film, being that it was already perfect. Hopefully I wont be dissapointed. Another rumor is that Romero already has the 4th dead movie ready to go, but is finding it hard to get the funds to make it. They even said the movie will most likely be called Twighlight of the Dead. The story is supposed to take place way in the future of the dead series, where the zombies wander the streets sorta like street bums and the people have gotten used to their presence. That is pretty much all I heard about it. *Edit: Return of the Living Dead is a classic film too, but it is definately in a class far below the Romero Trilogy (Night, Dawn, Day). Having said that though, I thought Savini's remake of "Night" was pretty great. Tony Todd kicks alot of ass. Quote:

Ya, not only did I love the remake of Night of the Living Dead, but I even liked the new ending that they went with.
As far as the remake of DOTD, the only big name star in it is Ving Rhames, the rest are all unfamiliar names (which made me breath a sigh of relief). Shooting began in June 2003 in Toronto, Canada. The mall scenes will be using Thornhill Square Mall through June and July. Cast: Ving Rhames - Kenneth (police officer) Sarah Polley - young nurse Hannah Lochner - Vivian Kevin Zegers - TBA Mekhi Phifer - TBA Tom Savini (cameo) - Sheriff Ken Foree (cameo) - TBA Scott Reiniger (cameo) - TBA |

I'm a Romero man, myself- even though his zombies can't run up and tackle you (they can hit you with a rock, though ) their tendency to gang up and overwhelm people seems more frightening. Not that the O'Bannon zombies don't do this, but with the slow-moving Romero ones it feels like a big moaning wave, and just kind of makes you feel hopeless all over. Terror is easy to achieve in film, but sheer despair is not.
I totally agree, there's nothing better than a zombie movie for scares. Dawn of the Dead's my favorite, but second runner-up's Dead Alive (or Brain Dead, depending on what video store you go to). I beg and implore all zombie fans to see it, if you haven't already- you won't be disappointed! Just don't eat while watching it.

Hey P9, is this "Dawn" remake happening with Romero's blessing? Is he involved at all? I's swear I've heard of Sarah Polley before, just can't remember where.
And RCC, I think that's what I love about Romero's zombies too. Check out the elevator scene in "Day" for what I concider one of the scariest moments on film. All those zombies on the elevator coming down. Brrrrrr.

Also, I looked up Sarah Polley. She was the blond girl in the movie "Go", which was a pretty cool flick as well. http://www.cinema-stars.com/polley/ Last edited by Plan9Senior; 08-23-2003 at 12:46 PM.. |

My personal favorite was Day of the Dead. I know I'm in the minority, but i was unimpressed with Dawn. Day had some of the most memorable death scenes I can recall from any movie, like the lead soldier having his legs ripped from his body while taunting the zombies with "choke on 'em!!!".
As for the remake of Dawn, Rhames, Polley, and Pfifer have all done quite a few movies. And just by looking at those names, it looks like they are trying to "hip it up", and i would imagine your hip-hop/metal fears will probably come true. |

Hey where is the love for the Italian Zombie? Has no one here heard of Lucio Fulci?
http://www.terrortrap.com/zombia.htm http://www.imdb.com/Title?0081318 The Italians are masters of the zombie flick. Dario Argento was uncredited on the script of Dawn of the Dead. What about Michele Soavi? http://us.imdb.com/Title?0109592 Italian zombie movies always have plenty of gore, good fx, and hot Italian chicks.

Holy Crap, Ive seen Zombie and didnt even know it. I was like 7 or 8 and went with my family to the drive in to see a double feature. They would always show 1 new movie and 1 older movie. I don't remember the first movie, but the second was definitely Zombie, because I clearly remember the opening boat scene. My parents made me sleep in the back seat because they didnt want me seeing the flick, but of course as a curious kid I found ways to see the majority of it. Now I'm gonna have to find that sucker and watch it again. Thanks for this bit of nostlagia.

Blue Underground just released an amazing new DVD transfer of Dead and Buried. If you've never seen this, treat yourself! One of my favorite Dan O'Bannon films for sure, and Blue Underground does their usual great job of restoring everything in the film that has been cut out over the years.

I'm with you Hrothgar, Lucio Fulci & Dario Argento are masters of the genre. With Romero, there are the 3 best Zombie movie maker ever. Return of the living dead are comedy for me, not horror movies. And I've been waiting ages for the 4th movie of zombie from Romero. Many fans believed that Resident Evil was gonna be it before he got kicked from the project at the begining. (can you believe it)
Italian Horror along with Romero's work were the prime of horror back in the 70's but I think now that the horror industry is more leaning toward the work and flick coming out of Asia. (Ringu, New Blood, Uzumaki, etc.) |

he collaborated on dawn ..., and makes great giallo movies, some of them my all time favourites, but without zombies. Lucio Fulci made excellent zombie movies : my favourites are the beyond , zombi & the house near the cemetary. these movies are low on coherent story but great on atmosphere. I also like the low budget ripp off zombie movies by less talented directors. i remember one with a s.w.a.t. team travelling trough a country/island intercut with stockfootage that is cleary from another era. in the same way they made the weismuller tarzan movies. it's campy, yes , but it's also great fun. my all time favourite zombi movie would be (the original) Dawn of the Dead. i still want to live in a deserted shopping mall. Also in asian cinema there are many examples of zombie movies but i haven't had the chance to see many of them yet. I saw Bio-zombie but this was a mediocre comedy featuring light amounts of gore and zombies. Versus : it's more of a martial arts/gun-play movie, but it features a lot of zombies and is great fun. junk is reported to be an interested zombie movie but i haven't been able to get the dvd yet.

I think I've seen that one with the island and the SWAT team. The zombies weren't very zombie-like (they could run fast and shoot guns, and only had some breadcrumbs or something glued to their faces for makeup) but still an entertaining movie.
And that reminds me... I've been dying to see Wild Zero. Supposed to be about a Japanese Rockabilly group who whack zombies with the power of Rock & Roll- and heavy ordnance, of course. Anybody seen it yet?

Speaking of Asian zombies I did see Versus and Junk and I must admit the interaction of yakuza and zombies is fun. I was downloading Bio-Zombie but I got tired of waiting 2 weeks so I just deleted it. Wild Zero sounds really funky like David Lynch meets Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town.

Wild Zero that is the name been looking for that one. Versus is good also.
Going back Romero and Fulci are the best at what they do or did. Also a movie i took to heart a few years back, and a few others seemed to copy off, running zombies shooting guns etc was Nightmare City 1980 by Umberto Lenzi there is a decent dvd out of it very reasonable here in Britian. Movie is a bit cheap looking and corny but good fun.

In honor of this thread, Im hosting a Zombie-thon at my house on Thursday. Surprisingly enough, alot of my friends are nostalgic about Zombie movies too. Im not sure whether or not to be worried about that fact. Anywho, we are gonna eat, drink, and then puke after seeing all the great flesh-rending, blood gushing special effects. Zombie 2, Versus, Day of the Dead are scheduled currently in the line-up, whith more possibly if i can find them.

Also, I loved how the female lead looked out at the slowly shuffling zombies and said what every one in the audience had been thinking for the last three movies, "We can just walk right past them!"

Well, I'm trying to go for Zombie flics I either havent seen, or havent seen for a while. I see Dead Alive and NOTLD all the time, both the original (with and without added scenes) and the updated version. And I was just never very impressed with Dawn like everyone else was. Day of the Dead was always my favorite. Sorry to offend.

The added footage was absolutely worthless, poorly written and even more poorly acted, and it really had no effect on the original picture, other than to give them a way to justify putting out a "special" 25th anninversary edition. The complete remake was much better than this edition, although the original is still the king.

I love the Romero flicks, and the first Return of the Living Dead is a hoot. The only problem I have with them is that things should be falling off of them, like arms, legs, eyes, you know, the good stuff. I loved when the zombie's mandible came off while he was trying to bite the girl in Return of the Living Dead II. That was pretty funny.

Nothing worse than the "Shovel Zombie" towards the end of "Day". In defending himself, one of the characters sticks a shovel in a zombies mouth and pops the top of his head clean off. As the characters run away, you can see the top part of the zombies head laying upside down, it's eyes still moving around.
Man, an existance of just laying upsidedown in a dark cave till your brain rots. I felt sorry for that zombie.
