Children of Men

GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!

Quick plot summary: In the near future, women become infertile, and no one knows why. England is the only country in the world that still has a stabalized government. Every other country has tore itself apart due to the infertility problem. Starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore.

One of the best movies I've ever seen. Please go see it, take your friends.

Incredible plot/story, the dialogue is terrific, the acting even better, and the action scenes leave you with a sick feeling in your stomach. It makes you so glad you aren't in their scenario.

The music/soundtrack in this movie is some of the best I've seen in years.

Anyone else see this movie?

I agree, this is one of the best science fiction in years. It reminded me of the old sci fi novels from Clark, Asimov, Bradbury, and Herbert.

I gave it a 10/10 and I'd like to see it again (even though it really is emotionally draining).

It sounds kind of like The Handmaids Tale. Is it much like that or the Outer Limits episode?

Redjake 01-16-2007 04:43 AM

The best way I can describe it is that it's similar to playing Half-Life 2 for PC, except with a different plot and less action/more drama. Very bleak, but very meaningful, with wonderful environments, wonderful soundtrack, and the best acting I've seen since Casino Royale and The Departed. Sleeper hit. It doesn't seem like any Outer Limits episode I've seen - it's a very realistic and "this could happen to us" portrayal. It barely seems like science fiction, given the realism. Great movie!

This film is nothing short of amazing.

The action sequences are intense and scary, intermixed with these moments of human emotion and generosity and hatred and love and pain... It's both epic and extremely personal. It's just outstanding. As will said, though, it takes a lot to watch it.

This took something for me to watch this, wasnt interested. Glad i did really good film, some excellent performances.

Hah, I'm not the only one who was reminded of Half Life 2. I think what did it was the color scheme: everything was muted and greyed, very little bright color. I always had problems with sci-fi movies and games where everything was bright and shiny and sleek... just seems too unbelievable to me.

Moskie 01-27-2007 11:48 PM

I loved this movie, too.

The Half-Life 2 feel is a great (and hilarious) point... I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the cinematography, though. Did you notice how the two major action sequences were all done in (mostly) one shot? Watch this video here for some info on them, it's pretty impressive. It really drew you in... and I see how that makes it feel similar to what you'd get out of a first-person shooter.

And a burning car coming down a hill, blocking your path as you get ambushed? That's a definitely a page out of HL2.

ha! ya. thats the 1st thing i told my gf after we finished the movie. the super long sequence at the end and the car were fucking awesome! i loved the fact that it was continuous. made me feel like i was REALLY there. This reminds me of the pulpfiction sequence with vince and jules in the building at the start. :)

ratbastid 01-28-2007 12:44 PM

You know, I didn't even notice all that craziness with the super-long takes and the floating camera in the car. That's the best kind of movie magic--when the magic and technology becomes invisible.

Lasereth 02-10-2007 04:47 PM

I just got back from this movie. Holy crap. Movies of this quality make you wonder how directors can even think about releasing shit like Norbit. The cinematography in this movie is outstanding. It really makes you believe that what's going on is real and not just a movie.

I think one of the overlooked but most profound aspects of this movie is how the future is portrayed. Did you see any laser rifles? No. Flying cars? No. Robots? No. The major futuristic aspects of this movie come from the LCDs all over the place, which make sense due to the recent explosion of LCD technology in our time. This is a realistic take on 20 years from now and I love it.

BTW I went into this movie knowing one thing about it: women are infertile. It really helps if you watch it not knowing much about it. The scene in the cow barn with Kee and Theo was probably the best in the entire movie.

I officially love Alfonso Cuaron and Clive Owen after watching Children of Men. Outstanding soundtrack as well.

Toaster126 02-11-2007 04:07 AM

Took a date to see this last night... I was really impressed with the story, the fine acting of Clive Owen, and the super-long scenes with no breaks. Everyone did a great job with that movie, and now I have to read the book. :)

hagatha 02-11-2007 06:36 AM

Maybe I should see it again. it didn't really grab me the first time. All I kept thinking was I've seen better post-apocolyptic films than this--- Like 12 Monkeys and Blade Runner.

Manic_Skafe 02-11-2007 07:43 AM

I'm gonna have to agree with Hagatha.

I was under the impression that that fact was supposed to be indicative of the very real possibility of such a scenario not so much in the distant future but only a few years from now and while one can certainly appreciate their attention to detail in terms of the technology - there were too many parallels that the movie could've drawn between that time and now that would've afforded the movie an extra element of realness and while the general themes of restricted movement and excessive gov't control were present it's almost as if they started out with the intention of being thought provoking and settled on shell schocking.

It was a good movie but could've been so much better.

I agree. It was good, but it just wasn't gripping or convincing to me. Maybe it was the actors or the pacing. I did like it, though, I just wasn't amazed by it.

Agreed. I love how we're 20 years in the future, and since there is NO future to look forward to, the whole world is completely stagnant, including technology. All the cars look like something that could be released next year (and look old enough to have been!).

My favorite moment was when they left the building. That was totally chilling.

Rekna 02-11-2007 02:44 PM

I liked it the people I went to with it didn't. While I agree with my friends that the plot was slow it was made up for by good acting and character development.

The uprising scenes were done amazingly well. They reminded me of footage from saving private ryan.

Wunderbar 02-16-2007 10:25 AM

Children of Men is easily a 10/10 for me. Entirely unique and an astounding soundtrack. I want to see it again already.

Was there ever any indication as to how the women became infertile?

Lasereth 02-16-2007 04:07 PM

I personally think it was due to genetic alterations and bioengineering experiments. The dog race had dogs racing unearthly fast, most likely due to bio-engineering. There was biohazard signs throughout the movie, and multiple talks and insinuations about biogenetical experiments. Much like people are saying engineered food is disrupting hormones causing girls to mature too early, I think the screenwriter is insinuating that this is the cause of the infertility. Of course I could be dead wrong because they never went out and said it. :)
