Mulholland Drive [Spoilers]

I just watched this movie last night and by the end of it all I could think was "What, wtf just happened? Does this even make any sense?! Am I supposed to be this confused?" "Yes. I think.. cause I am."

So. I noticed a bunch of people on here think this is a fantastic movie which leads me to believe that some of you "get it", where as I don't.

Somebody, anybody, please help me understand!

Spoilers:

There are two main sections of the film. The first two thirds or so are a fantasy, and the last is what really happens.

Betty is an innocent Canadian girl who wins a dance contest and comes to LA as an aspiring actress. She meets Camilla and falls in love with her and the two of them were girlfriends for awhile. They were up for the same part, which Camilla got. Camilla subsequently left Betty for the director and was preparing to marry him, so Betty, bitter and jealous about losing her girlfriend and losing the part, hires someone to kill her. Overcome by guilt, she fantasizes about a better life in which things are as she would want them to be--she's the confident one, the skilled actress, Camilla is helpless and dependant on her, she loses the part due to a conspiracy instead of acting skill, and so forth. All of the elements from the first two thirds are this fantasy, with elements from her real life transposed into the fever dream she's having, I suspect as she's masturbating on her couch.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, so the details may be off a bit, but that's the main idea: The first two thirds are a fantasy/fever dream Betty has just before killing herself in guilt over having had her ex-girlfriend killed. The last bit is real life showing us what was actually happening that led her to that state.

Yep, that's the going theory.

The stuff with the guys in the diner and the scary wino behind the dumpster and the nice but creepy old couple... that's just pure David Lynch-brand weird.

Oh, and.... Silencio!

Actually, I think that's a little thematic retelling of the basic story: One guy talks about a dream he had, and when confronted with the reality behind the dream he can't handle it. It's a clue as to what's happening in the main body of the film.

I've seen it, I bothered to ruminate on it enough to decipher pretty much what Gilda has said.

But I think it was a total pile of self indulgent crap.
