Futurama! A new season!

It was rumoured for a while but it looks like Comdey Central is going to order a new season of Futurama.

I am totally looking forward to this. I love the series and hope it keeps going and going.

Futurama has a future on Comedy Central

A new series of cult US toon Futurama is to be broadcast by cable channel Comedy Central, the first new episodes of the futuristic comedy since the Fox network dropped the series back in 2003.

The cable channel has greenlit at least 13 new episodes of the animated series, soon to be produced by Matt Groening (The Simpsons) with David X Cohen. The voices of original stars Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio will feature.

An option to make new episodes of the show was included in Comedy Central's 2005 deal with Twentieth Century Fox, from which it acquired the first 72 episodes that aired on the Fox network. The new and old episodes will start to air on Comedy Central from January 2008.

A Twentieth Century Fox representative said that the Fox network also has the option to air the new episodes, but added that the new series "may not fit into the channel's scheduling plans." Maybe Groening is hoping the show will follow in the footsteps of Family Guy, another toon axed by Fox but later resurrected after a cable rerun spiked DVD sales.

David Bernath, senior programming VP at Comedy Central, said his channel will be the first to air the new series. "There is a deep and passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show," he said. "It matches perfectly with out audience and it is great that we can offer them not just the existing library, but something they've never seen as well."

Gret news! Since Family Guy returned i was sure this was only a matter of time. I know i'll get flamed but Futurama is way better than the Simpsons, specially the last 5 or so Simpsons seasons that have been nothing but bullcrap.

Dilbert1234567 06-26-2006 08:33 AM

Good News everybody!

Willravel 06-26-2006 08:42 AM

All praise to Comedy Central!!!! I really hope that we can be privy to the same amazing writing that Futurama enjoyed on Fox.

ratbastid 06-26-2006 09:10 AM

I say to Fox: Kiss my shiny metal ass!

fresnelly 06-26-2006 09:18 AM

I wonder how they're going to play the Fry/Leela relationship?

cyrnel 06-26-2006 09:58 AM

Saw a brief mention of this on boingboing but we've seen false starts before.

This looks reliable.

Oh yea. Do the bender!

//Trying not to regress too much at the good news.

bermuDa 06-26-2006 10:04 AM

Thank goodness, I am so sick of reruns!

guthmund 06-26-2006 11:25 AM

this is AWESOME!!!! I am happy that they get to make new episodes. I feel they put alot of hard work into that series and they didn't get to play the story out, until now...or 2008.

i think most ppl who saw the show can agree that it's way better than the simpsons. i havent watched the last season or so. it's so boring!

longbough 06-26-2006 03:11 PM

I was more of a Futurama fan (c.f. my avatar) until I discovered Family Guy which is probably 20 times more clever, funny, vulgar and creative.

... but I'll still watch both, I'm sure.

theguyondacouch 06-26-2006 06:24 PM

Awesome! Futurama is my favorite cartoon, if not my favorite show all together. I can't wait for the return!

Devoid 06-26-2006 06:35 PM

I enjoy Futurama, but only after giving it a second chance. When I originally saw it on Fox, I couldn't sit through an episode, but once it got on Adult Swim, I was hooked with a quickness. It's a much smarter show than either Simpsons or Family Guy. I love the science nerd jokes, and am really looking forward to some new greatness from these new episodes. :)

Frosstbyte 06-26-2006 07:12 PM

It was probably the best news I'd heard in a very long time. I'm thrilled that futurama is coming back. It is by far my favorite cartoon ever. I'm just disappointed that it's going to comedy central. It's been such an integral part of my Adult Swim experience for so many years, I will miss it dearly. Ah well, I'll take more futurama whereever I can get it.

stevie667 06-27-2006 03:02 AM

Wait, somethings coming...yes...no...ye...no...yes, yes...no...yes! Wooo!

A Terrifying Message from Al Gore

This is great.

Val_1 07-01-2006 03:29 PM

I am stoked about this! Futurama was a great show. Now they've got to bring back Firefly.

Nope I can watch re-runs all day ! - Anyway it is about bloody time I was going to get Morbo to kill humans at Fox as they are puny and inferior !

Kadath 07-02-2006 05:00 AM

2008, though. That's so far away! 18 damn months...I don't know if I can wait.

heywatsup 07-02-2006 08:34 PM

best.news.ever!!
personally i cannot wait D:

guy44 06-09-2009 07:48 PM

Good news, everyone!

Futurama just got brought back to life - not as DVDs, like the last couple of years, but as a fully-fledged TV show on Comedy Central! The order is for 26 episodes! Huzzah!

One of the coolest things about this, besides the obvious, is that I think the cast must be extremely pumped. Whenever I've read interviews with the voice cast (especially Billy West), they always talk about how much they genuinely loved Futurama.

Now all we need to do is get Firefly back on the air somehow...

Charlatan 06-10-2009 01:05 AM

Just confirming the news as well:

Quote:

Comedy Central is breathing new life into the animated series Futurama, ordering 26 new episodes from 20th Century Fox TV. Comedy Central will re-launch the series the middle of next year, confirming the three lead actors have all signed on to return: Billy West as Philip Fry; Katey Sagal as Leela; and John DiMaggio as Bender. FOX originally aired the series created by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen from 1999 to 2003.

I guess I missed the first reuppal; I shall not miss the second! And I suppose I'll echo the sentiments uttered before, but Futurama is still perhaps one of the best animated cartoons/sitcoms created, possibly besting the first decade of The Simpsons run.

New Futurama Teaser Trailer! | Comedy Central Insider Blog

I can't seem to get the new trailer to work, but the basic gist of it explains to you, the awaiting audience, is that new episodes begin this June.

(also, each and every time this announcement happens, I'm actually expecting for a new season of Futurama to start back up, not just receive a package of 3-4 episodes that are intertwined to make a made-for-TV movie revolving around this universe. I'm not complaining, but it does get to be weird to hold your breath for something that has yet to happen in 3+ years; a brand new season and series upstart.)

Xerxys 03-18-2010 02:19 PM

Sweet! Futurama!

Then I looked at the date of the posts and I was all

SONOFABITCH!!!!

But then I scrolled down and was all

Really awesome to hear I loved this show and could never figure out why it never had a big enough audience to come back like family guy did. Anyway after a horrible night its pretty good to hear.

A+ for clever referencing. I loved the teaser trailer, too - "it's some sort of comedy central channel and now we're on it" indeed.

Jetée 06-15-2010 09:15 AM

I would've created a new thread for this, but I don't like to create them for nothing, and it ties in, so here is the scoop:

Recap-O-Rama: Five seasons of "Futurama" condensed into nine minutes, narrated by Zapp Brannigan:

guy44 06-27-2010 10:18 AM

Well, now that the new season premiered, what do you think? Personally, I really enjoyed Rebirth and thought the second ep was just ok. But man oh man it is good to have Futurama back. I can't wait for the rest of the season!

Zeraph 06-27-2010 01:48 PM

I missed the new episode. Does anyone know where I can see it? I've been keeping an eye out for reruns and looked online but haven't found anything :(

edit: yay finally caught a rerun of it. I liked it.

Jetée 06-27-2010 02:12 PM

There's some sort of mini-marathon of it to be run tonight on Comedy Central, at midnight (Est) ; perhaps the two newest episodes will lead off this showing.
