A few new pieces, one non-tattoo

Just thought I'd throw up a few of my newer pieces I've been working on lately. As you can see, I kept the tattoo-flash feel in most of them, with the exception of the self-portrait. The two whiskey bottles and the flaming guitar were not made as actual flash, though, but were more inspired by the pictures one might find decorating the walls of a tattoo studio. Most of the color is Prismacolor pencils (with some pastels used in the guitar and flames) with the black/grey being split between pencils and charcoal (charcoal used for the backgrounds, pencil for the actual objects).

An attempt at "creepy" black/grey flash:

Be interested to hear what people think of these.

*edit* the guitar picture isn't showing up, so I've removed the link for now

I really really like the self portrait, something about it strikes me as sinisterly sexy

majik_6 06-26-2004 05:57 PM

Thanks. :) I was going for sinister/angry...I had NOT been having a good day.

ShaniFaye 06-26-2004 05:59 PM

well you definately got the sinister part....Im just one of those that happens to find "sinister" a sexy thing in most cases....do you have any more like that?

majik_6 06-26-2004 07:05 PM

I had literally hundreds of self-portraits (most sinister), but they all got trashed at the artschool (left it over night and the janitors got 'em).

ShaniFaye 06-27-2004 05:42 AM

Well then....its time to do some more dont you think!!

Spanxxx 06-28-2004 07:36 AM

great work majik. I really enjoy your style.

majik_6 06-28-2004 05:42 PM

Thanks for the kind words!

Lewis: I've been working on a new image that is both rooted in the ideas of tattooing and draws on specific tattoo imagery, but is more modern and less trite. :) I'll post it up as soon as I can get it finished.

i really like Whiskey Lullaby & the self-portrait... very nice work!

I like the detail of the paper surrounding the whiskey bottle, it's that kind of work that makes the tattoo feel that I think you're going for.

I think your work is really moving now. Nice!

Have you tried charcoal pastels. Maybe they are difficult to get hold of there, but they are a mixture of carbon and pastel, give wonderful blacks and also nice controlled smudges.

majik_6 07-01-2004 10:26 AM

Charcoal pastels? Would that be the same as compressed charcoal? I used some regular pastels (chalk, not oil) in the guitar picture for the flames and the base tone for the guitar (which didn't attach before, but can be found below) and I used regular compressed charcoal for the black backgrounds in the tattoo-style images and the self portrait, to get the even look of an inkwash without the need for an inkwash. However, if it's a different sort of product, then I'll have to give it a try, cause it sounds like something I would have a use for!

Here's the guitar image that didn't want to post before:

Sorry for the photo quality. :)

Thanks, flyman! I'll probably be posting up some more new pieces tonight or tomorrow, since i've collected quite a few works since my last post.

"Rotgut whisky" reminds me a lot of the work of Robert Williams (and that's a good thing)

majik, I am impresssed with your vision. I really like the angle from which you approach your work.

majik_6 07-18-2004 07:48 PM

clavus: Thanks! I'm humbled by the comparison to Robt. Williams. I've always greatly admired his work.

I'd like to get a better picture of that particular piece (the Rotgut whiskey), in order to better show the details, such as the lettering on the bottle, but oh well.
