Sketching

So, I've slacked off a bit on my "Photo a Day" goal in lieu of doing some sketches. I've been working like a mad woman on these. I just thought I would share them. I'm not an artist by any means, but I do quite enjoy it.

I apologize for the crappiness of the pictures. I don't own a scanner, so I had to take a picture of them. ):

I think I'm digging on the last one the most.

I could be the way you photographed the last one (which can be an art in itself) that gives it a really unique look. Not thtat the other are bad, but I like the last one the best becasue of the lighting whether intentiona; or not. Can you post any more? Very nice pieces.

These are nice! I think I like the first one the most because of the way the facial features are defined with just shadows, very few hard lines.

Very nice. I really like the way the third one is done.

Very nice! I like the second and last ones the most. The last one seems to be a little more refined yet still in the style of the others. My opinion at least.

the eyes are the best facial feature in each.

i also like the last one -
maybe because it doesn't have a background?

for what it's worth,
i think the background in the 2nd one
(and the 3rd to a lesser degree)
takes away from the actual portrait.

The first one reminds me of the "Take On Me" music video.

Fun, fun sketches! So much personality. I like the second one the best.

Have you ever tried a graphite stick, RangerJoe? I ask because you have spent so much time emphasizing the borders and background that they almost overwhelm your nicely proportioned and sensitive linework in the portraits. Perhaps a graphite stick held so that you used it's entire length to make broad sweeps of cover would be an interesting addition to your work. Actually, the stick broken into manageble lengths could work nicely with your shading techniques in the features themselves.
Thanks for sharing

You are too an artist! Try doing some in charcoal or pastel.

I get upset with charcoal. It's so messy and I get it EVERYWHERE.
