I've been in enough large US cities to expect the baggage that comes with them: rude behaviour, litter, uncaring public, just to name a few. I saw none of that in Tokyo. I was stunned. For a mammoth city, 12 million in the city, 30 million in greater Tokyo, I never once saw anyone being disrespectful or rude. Everyone was so polite and helpful. Neatly dressed and orderly, no litter anywhere, it was so refreshing. I never imagined that such a place existed in today's world. As much as I love the US, our society has nothing over Japan's. I really can't wait to get back.

The only distressing thing was the amount of American culture that has wormed its way into Japan. Nearly every chain restaurant you can think of, Century 21, Sports Authority, Goodyear, even a Prime Outlets outlet mall!

Thanks Tokyo for being so decent.

I've known a few Japanese out here in Oz, and been impressed by ALL of them. All polite, all pleasant to be around.

One of my strongest impressions is from a quiet Japanese girl I knew when I was at university. The college I was living in would close down for a couple of months over the Christmas break. That summer I moved across the road to stay with my then girlfriend. When I was moving back in at the end of the break, I spent several hours carrying huge boxes of books and stuff across to my college room. On the way, a few people said hi, how's it going, that sort of thing. Only one offered to help, and as far as I am aware, her offer was serious. This quiet, petite girl, probably not a snowflake's chance in Hell of even being able to lift one of these boxes - and she was the only person who asked if I needed a hand.

The world can do with a few more souls that shine that brightly.
