Weak... I really don't know what to say besides that one word... "weak"
It could also be because I haven't fully woken up yet. [edit] Quote:
I liked this quote though: Quote:

It depends what the mandate of the cinema is...
If its mandate is to spread the gospel of science, regardless of the cost (i.e. they have an annual budget to screen whatever they feel is relevant) then it should screen whatever they feel like However, it it has to turn a profit (i.e. be self sustaining), they should be conscious of their audience. A small town cinema that only shows art house films (read: foreign films) isn't going to survive. They need to be aware of what will bring in the audience. This isn't the same as a the Science Centre proper not having a display about the same topic. Most Science Centre's with IMAX cinemas do not include admission to their cinema as part of admission to the Science Centre. |

Everyone knows God put those volcano fish there to test us.

I thought satan was the one responsible for that.
Anyways, it's difficult for me to grasp how someone could dismiss all that evidence across so many scientific fields as a "theory". The knowledge gained from evolutionary theory is being applied in nearly every scientific field, founded new ones (genetics), and it is as solid a theory as any other. Moreso, in fact, because it has stood up to so much scrutiny and passed. The only reason I can think of to be able to ignore something like this would be to just not read anything on evolution and parrot whatever the rest of the creationists say. I just don't see how you could read a piece of literature explaining Darwin's origin of species (or the idea behind it) and then reject it outright. |
Evolution is a theory. But so is our understand of Gravity, Relativity, etc... It doesn't change the fact that these theories have been tested and tested again and are generally accepted as solid working theories.

Robert E. Lee: "Alright, we'll give up slavery. But we still don't have to read books"
Penny for your quote identification. |
When I first heard of this "volcano censorship" I thought it was a joke. This kind of thing is going too far IMHO. Maybe if they just put a disclaimer in small writing at the end of the film that says:
"This film contains references to natural processes that may involve evolution and large time scales. The viewer is encouraged to decide for themselves whether it is the result of intelligent design or not." :) I'm just kidding and I agree with the author that by not showing it we are doing a disservice to the public—those who question evolution and those who do not. |

I can't place the episode... I'm not hardcore enough |
Weaksauce. But I can understand that they need to make money. I wish more would go so they weren't so expensive, otherwise I'd go every week. Imax is awsome, I've actually met someone who hasn't been to one before. If you havn't, you must!

It seems strange that the people visiting a science center would be offended by the idea of science films being shown there. Who are these hypothetical patrons who want to learn more about science, but care little about evolution, the age of the universe, deep sea life, and quantum physics? It seems likely
Fort Worth is a big city that is part of a huge metropolitan area; I doubt that there is a lack of audience for such films in such a large area, and I also doubt the people who would object are the kind of people much interested in coming to a science center in the first place. Why let the objections of non-patrons affect how you do business? |
