Tilted Debate league.

I've been thinking about this all morning so I figured I might as well type it out before I forget it.

What do you do you guys/gals think about having 2 teams of 3 people debate different topics? One team debates the "for" and the other team debates the "against" No matter what their personal opinions may be.

I've thought of a few possible rules.

The debate will be 12posts total / 6 posts per team or 3 days depending which comes first. The Team leader can make all posts, or each member can speak his mind, I'll leave this decision up to the individual teams to sort that out.

None of the posts should be over 500 words, We don't want someone making every point there is to make on the first post do we?

I was thinking that as the debate ends, a poll could be added to determine the winner but I'm not a big fan of anonymous polls on the internet. So, I think we need 3 people to be judges. They will vote on who made the better arguement, They will need to be as unbias about the topic and judge only on presentation. A poll could also be used

We don't need a dominate team and we need a fresh rotation of new people playing so after a team has won 3 matches, they have to replace 1 member and if they continue to be dominate the team is retired so they cannot be teamed together anymore.

There are alot more rules I'd need to cover but I just want to see if there is enough support for this to make it work before I put more thought into it.

So?

Wow, I for one really like the idea, and I would definetly be up for trying this myself.

I'm opposed.

It wouldn't work. It would end up in flames left and right. It is a good idea though.

Rdr4evr, if you read the politics and philosophy forums you'll see that even though some discussions can get heated there are minimal flames. All posts would have to obey the rules of tfp, so flaming in a structured debate is the same as a flame anywhere else on the forum.

I can already tell that this isn't gathering much interest, I guess you were right about it not working, although I think your reasoning is wrong.

I think we need to have a debate, if we should have a TFP Debate thread.

I am in.....having abandoned (temporarily) the politics forum, I am going through serious withdrawals.

Let me know.

Sounds like a solid plan.

I've thrown this idea around with halx and cyn and a few others a little bit..we were just kinda trying to figure out all the details....I'm hoping hal hasn't forgot about it *hint* :D anyways I've been wanting a debate forum for a while.. so count me in

I think it would be fun. I love to debate!

And, since 99% of the members are very respectable to other users, I don't think we would have too much of a problem with flaming.

Sounds like a good plan, i can put into practice all the stuff i bothered to learn at school...
