Double Dip and dipping etiquette
Sorry for the inane thread, but is double dippin' really that bad?
Basically a small fraction of your mouth touches the dipping item, if you put it in again. You're hardly slobbering all over the place. Sometimes people get a bit too uptight about these health things :( What doesn't kill you makes you stronger :p :D edit: that said, i always turn the dipping item around, if i do dip again (so it's on the other edge) and i always get called for the double dip. I think Seinfeld made it too infamous :( |
It's flu season here in the U.S.
Even if only a small portion of your mouth touches the chip/carrot/whatever, I still don't want your germs. Maybe I'm uptight about it, but I HATE getting sick. |
icky
|
if you're sick, please don't do this, but otherwise, it's just uptightness really.
You don't go disinfecting and industrially cleaning your fork at a restaurant either, do you? Imagine how many more possible mouths that has touched |
I dislike double dipping. I'm not so much worried about germs, but I consider it rude.
I'm not the type of person to flame anyone for doing it, but I would certainly not do it myself. I didn't vote in the poll as neither choices suit my p.o.v. |
Obviously if you're sick it's not a good idea. But just people with normal health?
I know it's probably a little rude, but hey, what can i say? i like my dip  Quote:
sorry again :) |
Just wait till you have kids and they start sickin up on ya.
This thread will mean bugger all then buddy. |
I suppose that I'll step over into the "it's rude" camp. I'm not concerned so much with the germ factor unless, of course, you are hacking and sneezing all over the place. But the plain, simple and pointed truth of it is that double dipping is just plain out and out rude. So...yeah...don't do it.
|
1. you don't always know that you're sick, but you can still be carrying germs
2. Nisses, I would hope that the restaurant WASHED the fork before they gave it to me; there's a difference between using a fork that's been washed, and sticking something that's been in your mouth into a communal pot of dip. 3. I'm not going to have kids, so NYAH :) |

"rude" would've been my choice though, as you may have guessed :) let the discussion continue in 4..3..2..1.. |
I only double dip if at home, with my family. At other people's houses, no double dip. I would most certainly expect other's do not double dip either, but when you get children involved, they just don't know better (if the parent doesn't make it clear, or depending on the age), so you don't always know about that. But, if you're all friends/family, you are sharing germs anyway without even knowing.
|
I double dip, and feel no embarassment about it. I don't do it when I'm sick though (in that rare event, I'm about as sociable as a feral wolve anyway).
|
yes, we all hope it's been properly washed while at the restaurant, but it's not always the case, and we hope they use enough of the strong cleaning agent and disinfectant, but that's not always the case. :)
Oh, by the way, I still don't see what the big deal is, unless I misunderstand the double-dipping concept... You take a dorito for instance, dip it, bite off the dip and put the part that has barely touched your lips back in? Or you just lick it off and put the whole thing back in the dip? (cuz the latter is alot more gross :) ) |
I had a former girlfriend go postal with me about this. I had never really considered it a problem. However, since that time, I take care to break a chip into small enough segments where I just dip it one time.
|
I don't really have any big issues with double dipping. I know that I do it, but I at least make a point to turn whatever item of food that I happen to be eating around before I dip it again.
The episode of Seinfeld about it was hilarious! I suppose that since I don't have any problems with it I really don't consider it to be rude. I don't think that I've ever been called on it before. I remember a while back when I was at a family get-together I got a new scornful glaces for it. And I made a point to stop for the remainder of the day... Plus, I suppose that its a good point that you can pass many ocky germs onto others by double dipping. But I think that if a person isn't really sick enough to say anything about it or show any symptoms, then I really don't think that there is anything to worry about. |
just be happy i ain't double dippin' my dick in the dip.
and ya' that's gross.:) |
I don't do it, but I don't really care if someone else does. I mean, the worst that could happen is that I get sick and die right?
I just thought of an idea: maybe you can hold the chip so that you can dip once on each end before you even start eating! Ingenious! |
If you are having or are at a public gathering/party, it is definitey against the rules of ettiquite to double dip. The person in charge of the eats should make sure there are sufficient small plates for the guests to use for the dips and chip's. And plenty of napkins as well. What you do at home is your own business, but in public, please have a few manners.
|
As long as you don't flat out spit in the dip I don't care.
|
I try not to do it around people whose opinions I don't know. Why offend a friend over food?
That said, the only case that bothers me is when someone does it who has really terrible oral hygiene. If someone's mouth smells like a sewer all the time, I sometimes think of it as one. But I'm cool with most people. :) |

"If I knew it was go-in to be that kind-a party I would of stuck my dick in da mashed potatoes" ~Beastie Boys Like some have said, it all depends on the gathering. when children are involved, you might as well be eating the chips off the floor. their little germ factory's. As for every thing else, IMO, if your going to be anal about germs eat the chips in the beginning, cuz they all start off with proper dipping etiquette, then you get that guy with a whiskey in one hand while licking the dip off his fingers with the other. I personally don't care unless someone who is obviously sick starts to dip. Germs are everywhere....suck up as many as you can......you need the antibodies |
Why bother ?
Even a little dip tastes good, I don't get the double dipping thing. |
I don't double dip, I find it quite disgusting.
|
Just to refresh your memory:
TIMMY: What are you doing? GEORGE: What? TIMMY: Did...did you just double-dip that chip? GEORGE: Excuse me? TIMMY: You double-dipped the chip! GEORGE: "Double-dipped"? What are you talking about? TIMMY: You dipped the chip. You took a bite. And you dipped again. GEORGE: So...? TIMMY: That's like putting your whole mouth right in the dip! From now on, when you take a chip - just take one dip and end it! Personally, I've got to side with Timmy on this one. |
I'll double dip around my family, friends and boyfriend- that's about it. I guess I don't really care if others do it around me- with the exception of the sick.

A bit of spit on a chip is something I wouldn't worry about... now if you shoved a chip up you nose and then dipped, I might be concerned. |
I only doubly dip if I know the people I'm with. If not, then I will not double dip because they don't know that I'm that gross yet.
If I do double dip, I rotate to the 'clean' side. |
no big deal as long as they aren't just licking something off and re-using the same chip, or whatever
|
I'm of the "don't dip the side you bit off" camp. I don't mind it if other people double dip, but I turn the chip around to keep others happy.
|
I really don't mind if other people double-dip as long as they're not sick or have cold sores! :\ Other than that, go crazy if you're with me!
I don't double-dip though. I load the chip or tortilla with as much as I can at the start. This although can lead to dirty shirts and pants :( |
I hate it. Maybe that's just me. Unless you're with family, then who cares? If I do double dip, I will turn the item around.
|
Shaking someone's hand, touching a doorknob, sitting in a chair, etc. probably transfer far more germs to your body than a double-dipper.
I think it's going a bit overboard to get all uptight about someone dipping a chip after it touched part of their lips, and this is coming from someone who uses a paper towel to open a public restroom door. I flip the chip around in mixed company though, just because some people get so offended for whatever reason. |
i love me some double dippin
|
I have a novel solution. I load the chip up with dip, give it a few seconds to let the excess drip back into the bowl, then put the whole damn thing into my mouth. I'm big enough so that it doesn't loook bad, and it solves the problem.
With breadsticks, break off, then dip. |

We got some germaphobes here (also covered in Seinfeld).
Someone previously mentioned, touching a doorknob, especially in a bathroom (where a small percentage of people wash hands) is far worse than a double dip. Personally, I'm a rotator (dip, bite, rotate, dip, bite) |
Double dipping amongst strangers is a no-no.
