Now this is a BIG snake!
49-foot python captured in Indonesia
983-lb creature believed to be world's largest The Associated Press Updated: 9:27 a.m. ET Dec. 31, 2003JAKARTA, Indonesia - Indonesian villagers claim to have captured a python that is almost 49 feet long and weighs nearly 990 pounds, a local official said. If confirmed, it would be the largest snake ever kept in captivity. Hundreds of people have flocked to see the snake at a primitive zoo in Curugsewu village on the country’s main island of Java. Local government official Rachmat said the reticulated python measured 48 feet 8 inches and weighed in at 983 pounds. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the longest ever captured snake to be 32 feet. The heaviest — a Burmese Python kept in Gurnee, Ill. — weighs 402 pounds, the book said on its Web site. The Indonesian newspaper Republika said the snake, which was caught last year but only recently put on public display, eats three or four dogs a month. Reticulated pythons are the world’s longest snakes. They are capable of eating animals as large as sheep, and have been known to attack and consume humans. The species is native to the swamps and jungles of Southeast Asia. I find this just amazing! Could you imagine seeing something this big slithering along beside you? I don't mind snakes in general but this just gives me the heebie jeebies! |
What about those poor dogs? :( Anything bigger than a garder snake gives me the creeps! Then again it's doubtful I'd be in an Indonesian jungle without a very big gun at my side.
|
I'd like to see some pictures of that. But man I'd be scared of the snake too. I've been afraid of snakes since I was about 5 and almost got bitten by one.
|
Be curious to see if it's real. There's a $50,000 prize for the capture of any snake over 30 feet long. it's called the Roosevelt Prize after the person who established it in 1912: ex- U.S. president _Teddy_ Roosevelt .The prize has gone unclaimed in all that time, though not for lack of trying by people everywhere. So if people have failed to find a 30+ foot snake in 91 years, it'd be fairly suspicious for a 48-footer to pop out of nowhere.
|
Damn! There goes my summer vacation!
That is just freaky! I don't want anything slithering up beside me that can eat me! (Well, ahem, I mean, you know, that isn't my sweetie) |
yeah saw that on CNN - it fit inside my TV though, so I can't imagine it's all that big...
:) |
Nice to see the snake is dining on the same food as the people in Indonesia
|
That is one hell of a big snake! Yahoo has pictures of it in their story.
|
Damn that is huge. If I walked up on that, I don't know what I'd do.
|
Blimey, thats a big snake.
|
Crikey Thats a Big One! :D
|
Yeah apparently the snake was being worshipped by a tribe when it was found.
|
how horrible!!!
Snakes are evil. |
There's pictures of the snake here: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...t_031230151535
Creepy looking thing |
And to think people buy these things and have living in their homes? Why? What thrill could it possibly give someone to want a snake in their home that could grow to be that big and look at you as a food source?
|
I was watching a Discovery Channel special on Cobras just the other day. Did you know snakes have red penises? I wonder how big this guys is!?
|
I have a snake named Tom Riddle that is 22.....inches. It likes to curl up in my daughter's hair. Kind of creeps me out when she does that. :hmm:
I wonder how old a snake that size would be. |
ok, I'll be the first to say it: Halx, what the hell are you doing in Indonesia? :D
|
Thanks...
Now I'm never leaving my house. |

This is amazing and such, just angers me they took it out of the wild where it BELONGS. >:O
Let nature do its own thing people!!!! |
When I first read that article about that snake a few days ago they had a picture included with it. That snake was freaking HUGE. I cannot for the life of me imagine how freaked I would be if I was out in the jungle and saw something like that.
|
It would be interesting to know how they captured it. I think snakes are interesting and not the least bit creepy. I have had several for pets. Nothing that big of course ; )
|
LOL Art.. so not funny :p
I love snakes.. don't have a problem with them. I think the only time I'd have a problem with this one is when it say tries to give me a hug.. that'd be a big problem! |
They will probably eat it.
|
I now hate snakes even more!!!
|
Yup ..... Seen that fella on the news .... damn big buggar
hate to meet up with that one in a dark alley ..... ..... ..... or a well lit one for that matter Cheers |
i used to catch rattlesnakes but nothing of that magnitude
|
I am not afraid of many things, but snakes fu*king freak me out. I am sorry, I just do not like them.
|
Looking at the pics, that is a large snake, but it is nowhere near 49 feet, i have seen some 20+ footers in person and they are a sight to behold... i would have to see more pics of it streched out
EDIT.. after looking at several pics of the snake from a thread on kingsnake.com, the snake is defenatly not the lenght they stated, but may be a new record.. defenatly bigger than anythign i have seen in person. and if i am not mistaken there is still a 50K reward for any living snake over 30 feet... they might get to collect the monies |

wow, I'd love to have that as a pet, wonder how much they would sell it for? I might have a problem if it eats my dog though... Hmmm, maybe I better stick to warm blooded pets.

People on Fark are going apeshit saying that this snake is a hoax and is more like 20 feet long. The fact that most people are overlooking is that none of the pictures of the snake show the end of it. It would be different if it were all there on a single picture, but it's not. On the one picture, the body stretches out towards the bottom GETTING BIGGER! I thought snakes got smaller towards the end? I think that only half of the snake is shown in some of those pictures. Take a look at this one!

That's a huge freaking snake.
|
dark-colored male snake
I wanna see his pee-pee. |
holy hell!!!
that thing could have me for breakfast... just look at how wide it is, that looks like a pretty good sized board that its "perching" on, and it seems to be just about as wide as that! |

Hail Citizens!
Indonesia represents a sinister, sorcerous menace, a black land of nameless horror whose numerous cults of fanged serpent gods are looked upon with cold dread. The culture came into being when the nefarious ancestors of modern Indonesians drove westward and conquered the land from the snake people who built the black obelisks and the haunted catacombs beneath their dark inscrutable towers. The foolish captors of that sacred serpent will each die a slow horrible death seemingly crushed in the invisible coils of a vengeful saurian spirit. Nothing can save them. -GH |
