Gee, I guess I don't have to watch it now. Since they tape delay to the West Coast, I have no idea what happened.

But if a California Girl wins, I may watch just to see if she shoulda.

She's pretty. One a them short hair chicks but she's one of the finalists that I believe was not as pretty as virginia. Woman really was beautiful. Had a sparkle in her eye n everything...beautiful smile. Sassy too. Even better.

I've always been fascinated with beauty pageants. Part of it is the obvious appeal of having 50 (51?) beautiful women all arrayed there - it's like having a matched set or something. Honestly, after a while they become indistinguishable.

But it's also kind of a train-wreck fascination - seeing these women parade themselves for judgment, and ooooh the drama. I'm never sure whether I think these women are degrading themselves, or whether they're simply opportunistic and making the most of an asset - physical beauty - while they still can. Either way, that's entertainment.

$50k scholarship and a diamond tiara to the winner.

Is that enough to put you in the cattle mart?

I never can comprehend how people define beauty as something that is ascertained by a pathetically restricted, overwhelmingly visual, set of parameters. We minimize it to an absurd degree.

The idea of beauty has a long and illustrious history - it is the foundation of the branch of philosophy known as esthetics (or aesthetics if you prefer prefixing it with the useless "a"). To know who or what is beautiful requires some subtlety we don't seem to value or have any clue about.

I''d say one of the greatest injustices we've done to our humanity is to have dragged the concept of beauty not only down to skin-deep status, but restricted it to a silly subset of visual cues.

Agreed. Seems like a pointless waste to me. I mean, when I was 13 I thought it was a pretty cool show... not so much anymore.

Pops loves that shit. We had to record it for him so we were forced to watch it.

None of the finalists were that great-looking. Miss USA has prettier contestants, but Miss America has more talented ones.

Miss USA allows "physical enhancements", Miss America does not.

That being said, since Miss America actually has talent as one of the parameters, this eliminates some of the great looking but talentless girls that would otherwise enter it.
