What do you do with 300lbs of potatoes?

The company my uncle works for got called today to clear out a bunch of stuff from a train that was overloaded. It was over the weight limit I guess, so they had to clear out enough stuff (mostly logs and potatoes) so it made the weight requirement.

My uncles company just gets to keep the stuff, since its too expensive for the company hauling it to ship the extras back so he brought home about 1000lbs of potatoes, and a bunch of the logs.

So, he just dropped off 300lbs of them for us:

I guess we'll just store most of them in the basement, but I dont look forward to moving the 100lbs bags. lol

Minx 07-18-2003 02:23 PM

Get out those potato salad recipes!

The_Dude 07-18-2003 02:26 PM

hhhaa, have fun w/ 'em.

Donkeypuncher 07-18-2003 02:30 PM

potato salad, my ass! Let go invade Rhode Island!!

P.A.C.

ohhh yeah, yeah, yeah... you're in Canada, eh. Any provinces you don't like much? I hear those guys in Quebec are real bastards. They've got it coming.

Gortexfogg 07-18-2003 02:31 PM

Make 150 lbs of mashed potatoes (with a whole lot of gravy) and 150 lbs of home made french fries. Then invite everyone you know over and hope they eat it all.

MrFlux 07-18-2003 02:31 PM

DonkeyPuncher has the only possible correct answer here:
Make a potato cannon. They are the best thing ever.

GoldenOuroboros 07-18-2003 02:56 PM

WOW! I love those PAC's! :D My brother has one.. nothing so hi-tech tho... just some poly-cemented pvc pipe, fill it up with some aerosol, press the igniter switch and watch the potato fly jimmy!
:D

LaughingCow 07-18-2003 03:05 PM

Hehe, I might just end up making a potato cannon. I've never made one but a friend of mine has. Good idea, :)

Donkeypuncher 07-18-2003 03:11 PM

I know this doesn't apply to our friend with the flapping head and beady eyes, but to anyone eyeing the kick-ass PACs...

DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms
Washington, DC 20226
Sep 12 1995 3311.4

Dear Mr. XXXXXXXXX

This refers to your letter of August 18, 1995, in which you ask about the legality of a device known as the "Spud Gun." These subject devices are generally constructed from PVC tubing and fittings and are designed to launch a muzzle loaded potato using aerosol hair spray or other type of propellant.

Ignition is by means of some type of "spark" igniter.

The Bureau has previously examined devices known as "Spud Guns, Potato Guns, or Spudzookas" and have determined that such devices, in and of themselves, are not firearms as defined in Title 18 United States Code (U.S.C.), Chapter 44, S 921(a)(3) or 26 U.S.C., Chapter 53, S 5845.

However, any similar devices which can be determined to be weapons by reason of their design construction, intended use, actual use, ammunition or other factors may meet the definition of a firearm under Title 18 or 26 U.S.C.

We suggest that you contact your State and local law enforcement authorities concerning possession of such devices.

We trust that the foregoing has been responsive to your inquiry. If we may be of further assistance please contact us.

Sincerely yours,
Edward M. Owen, Jr.
Chief, Firearms Technology Branch

tater cannon gets my vote

Kaos 07-18-2003 03:18 PM

Potato Cannon was the first thought that came to my mind :D

Peetster 07-18-2003 03:23 PM

Peel, quarter and can them.

clavus 07-18-2003 03:27 PM

I hate to be a buzzkill, but is there a food bank in your area? You could feed 300 pounds of spuds to hungry people.

Shit, keep 100 pounds for yourself to play with if you want. It just seems like you have an opportunity to make your world a slightly better place at zero cost to you.

Donkeypuncher 07-18-2003 03:44 PM

Well, duh. Isn't "visit the local shelter" the obvious answer?

You know, after invading Quebec. Which was a totally plausible offering...
(grin)

Screw that - is he Russian? I bet he could make a fair amount of vodka with that many potatoes. A little Chopin, anyone?

bermuDa 07-18-2003 03:55 PM

spud guns are tons of fun :)

but be sure to shoot it off in a remote location, law enforcement types aren't too fond of them ;)

Rodney 07-18-2003 05:20 PM

The foodbank thing's a great idea. Also, chowder. Lots of chowder. Requires nothing but potatoes, milk, and butter; I could eat it three times a day.

But whatever you do with those potatoes, get rid of them before they go bad. Nothing smells worse than a bad of rotten potatoes. Bad as an overripe portajohn.

Sorry dude, Food banks wont take produce...just canned goods, and packaged food.

Not to mention it's unsafe to shoot them off in populated areas.

WhoaitsZ 07-18-2003 06:35 PM

dude. seriously:

get some dark to put them under. we own the first house built in Oak Grove, a house off the ground built in 1879, and we put the potatoes we plant under it. the darkness and semi-controlled heat keeps them good for months.

seems like one year we were using some for right at a year.

oh and potato guns. nuff said

um i lied

how about soup kitches?

This CAN'T be! A reasonable response from the BATF??

BlueBongo 07-18-2003 07:24 PM

Pull out (or make) a potato gun... those rule :)

LaughingCow 07-18-2003 07:27 PM

Yeah, I'd definatly have to go somewhere remote. Just shooting a cap gun off near my place would probably get the cops called. lol

I'm pretty sure the foodbank wouldn't take them like krwlz said, and my area doesn't have many places like that anyway or my uncle atleast would give some away.

Our house is pretty old too, so the basement is really cool (completely cement) so I think they'll stay good for awhile, plus they're really fresh to start with. Was a bitch trying to get them down the rickety stairs though, almost broke my back. ;)

Thanks for all the good ideas though, wouldn't have thought of most. :)

nothingx 07-18-2003 10:47 PM

Reguardless of what you decide to do, I'd say do it pretty soon. Man, I had to remove a sack of rotten potatoes from my kitchen the other day and thought I was gonna hurl the whole way to the dumpster. That was only three or four, I can't imagine what a few thousand would smell like.

You know, its kinda sad when something like this happens. I'm sure some farmer worked his ass off to grow those things so they could be sold in stores... now they're just sitting around. I bet crap like that happens all the time that most people aren't aware of. Imagine how much less expensive things would be if everything wasn't so ass backward.

Jonsgirl 07-19-2003 10:39 AM

I read a book once where this chick carved a potato into a dildo. maybe if you get bored with the cannon....

Mad_Gecko 07-19-2003 10:47 AM

All u need is 150lb of fish and open up a Big Fry.... :)

Spudguns are fine 'til someone loses an eye... (Groan)

MacGnG 07-19-2003 03:19 PM

BIG ASS CURLY FRIES!

edit: hey i just thought you could take some to a homeless shelter or a food bank. i'm sure they would really appreciate it.

Really? Crap!

It just seems like there are a lot of hungry people out there. There are 300 lbs of spuds. Somehow the two should connect.

It does suck! My grandmother once had so many melons, and squash to get rid of, like a completely heaping a flat bed hay wagon, and they wouldnt take em. It was pre packaged so...its just to bad

merkerguitars 07-19-2003 09:38 PM

Make a bunch of hashbrowns!

cheerios 07-19-2003 09:56 PM

baked potatos, twice backed potatos, mashed potatos, potato soup, potatos au gratin, french fries, potato salad, fried potatos and eggs, hash browns, 'taters and grits, etc etc etc. c'mon, be creative! maybe take a jaunt over to the cooking forum and see what people suggest? as for the guns, well... check w/ your local enforcement, and see how far on the sunny side of legality they are... you saw the ATF's letter above...

jkesaughnue 07-20-2003 09:29 AM

300#s of taters....potato gun....look at this

sadistikdreams 07-20-2003 11:59 AM

sell them back to Idaho

vermin 07-20-2003 12:16 PM

Red Russets, goooood eatin'.

Sometimes homemade guns can be more dangerous to the shooter than to the target. Personnally I'd trust steel pipe more than pvc.

stinkynutz 07-20-2003 02:10 PM

if i had 300lbs of potatoes...i'd do two chicks at the same time.
