A man was arrested Friday after he allegedly tried to get through a security checkpoint at MacDill Air Force Base with a loaded handgun and a knife as he asked to see Gen. Tommy Franks.

Todd Christian Wiegler, 31, of Brandon, pulled up in his car to a gate at the base around 8:40 a.m., Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said.

He apparently told MacDill security guards that he wanted to see Franks, who oversaw the war in Iraq as head of MacDill-based U.S. Central Command.

The guards asked Wiegler to get out of his car and quickly found a loaded Glock handgun on the dashboard, Durkin said. Wiegler also allegedly carried a concealed knife in a sheath.

Tampa police came to the gate and arrested him on charges of carrying a concealed firearm, a felony, and carrying a concealed knife, a misdemeanor, Durkin said. He was taken to Hillsborough County Jail pending a court appearance Saturday.

Wiegler did not have a listed phone number. Durkin and jail officials did not know if Wiegler had a lawyer.

Central Command officials would not say whether Franks was at the base Friday. Franks is scheduled to hand over control of Central Command to Lt. Gen. John Abizaid on Monday.

Maybe it was under something? doesnt really matter anyway cause having a loaded gun in the car is illegal in FL anyway unless you have a concealed weapons permit and then it HAS to be concealed

I've got a novel Idea, i'll go down to one of the most heavily armed areas i can think of with the intention of killing an armed general.

Then just to make matters easier on myself, i'll carry my "concealed" weapon right on the dashboard of my car... the armed guards won't notice....

what the fuck?!?!?!?

yes, let's walk into the headquarters of CENTCOMM and JSOC and think we're just going to be able to:

a) gain admittance without valid military ID, appointment, or escort

b) going to sneak a loaded handgun in ON THE FUCKING DASH of the car

c) get in without being searched for contraband, concealed weapons, or small children

d) walk away from the incident without being arrested or killed.
