Shave your head and go to hell

The guy in charge of my office's parking lot got a new haircut, living his hair really short, so I joked with him about falling asleep at the barbers chair and asked him why he didn't shaved his head given that he had left so little hair. His answer blew me away, "I can't do that" he said, "church does not allow us to do so, 'cause it is a sin and you could end in hell".
My first reaction was he HAS to be joking, so I joked back at him saying that then I had a sit waiting for me next to satan as I'm going bald, but his answer was even more shocking, he said "you don't have to worry about that because that's the way God made you, you should be more worried about dancing, drinking and having homosexual friends". Then, proceeded to take out his bible and started to read what he thought were great quotes that justified what he had just said.
The conversation, if one can call that a conversation, lasted for another 5 minutes in which he declared with all certainty that Jesus had never had an ounce of alcohol - seems like they have discovered strong evidence that confirms that the wine that the bible says he made at the Canaan's wedding was only grape juice- and he never befriended with hookers and other questionable characters - all of the sudden Mary Magdalen had changed her profession to immaculate God servant-. He went on how the evolution is crap and that science books that show about it have to be burned.
I really didn't objected what he said, I've met a lot of people like him in my time, but surely non as passionate as him, and knew that trying to reason with him was futile.
That was yesterday, and now I'm sitting here in my desk realizing that this guy knows more about me than I had realized and that he has already passed judgment on me and is sure that I'm condemned to hell, all of this based only on observation: who are my friends, what I have in my car, my profession, etc. It's really sad that in our times so much ignorance and hate is thought by so called "religions", but what really pisses me off, is that there is so much people out there stupid and eager enough to believe this bullshit and act accordingly.

It's a sin to shave beards, but I've never heard anything about the head. What verses did he quote?

BTW, Mary was never referred to as a prostitute in the NT. That rumor came much later.

He cited a Corinthians's passage that applies to women only, don't recall the exact verse.
About Mary Magdalen, yes I know she wasn't a hooker, at least there's nothing in the Bible that says so, but I was just paraphrasing what he said. It was obvious that he was trained to defend himself against those questions and he did so even before I asked anything.

Obviously the guy needs to familiarize himself with the OT.

Funny thing about thew OT and NT is that they interpret it or quote it depending on what is of their interest at the moment, there are many contradictions between the both of them that they have to choose what applies best based on circumstances.

I bet you were just stunned. Often religion, always war and India's caste system, bring people down and control them. It is unspeakably awful really what we sometimes do to one another. That said the point of your OP being that people actually fall for this stuff - yeah, that is always the problem isnt it!? It pisses me off too!!

A little religious tidbit I learned just recently, shortly before the TX fiasco, was that LDS women are expected to wear particular underwear that is to be purchased through the church.

Men too, if I'm not mistaken.

I usually don't listen to people like that. I shave my head, play violent video games, watch violent movies, have homosexual friends, have premarital sex, and listen to bands like Megadeth and Slayer. I've also been told by many people that I'm one of the nicest people that they've ever met and try to be a good person towards others. So, if any of those things are enough of a reason for me to go to hell, then I wouldn't want to go anywhere else.

It's an example of people doing (or thinking) idiodic-seeming things for no reason other than their church tells them too. Doesn't seem off topic to me.

I can remember having a conversation with the manager of the burger place I worked at in High School. She was convinced that if I didn't repent and accept Jesus as my saviour I was going to Hell. Asking her to expand on this she indicated that yes, the vast majority of the population, including those who practice other religions that also follow "God's word" will go to Hell as well.

While she wasn't as extreme as your parking attendant, she was pretty out there from my perspective.

Or at least bothered about it.

Also realize that much of religion exists solely outside of sacred writings.

Seriously. The law gets laid down old-school in Leviticus, and I've found that not a single modern Christian follows all the rules presented there. The argument presented back to me as to why centers around the idea that because Jesus died on the cross for our sins, we don't need to follow the old rules.

If you're going to literally interpret the Bible, shouldn't you at least be consistent?

Leviticus, Greek for "for the levites," is historically viewed as a set of rules and rituals for priests, not the common society. There's a reason that most of Leviticus is ignored by Christians (and even Jews) - it's not really intended to apply to them. Taking any of the rules as "rules for the masses" is a dramatic misunderstanding of the history of the Bible.

I would argue that MOST of religion exists outside of sacred writings. If not, there would just be one christian group rather than the hundreds or possibly thousands out there.

No kidding? With something to back it, ironman can fulfill monokrome and my dream of him arguing back with the guy.

Just because there is a wonderful symmetry now between Obama and McCain: look at the things the Reverends Hagee and Wright have said.

Folks who base their lives on a 4th century political anthology of a 5th millenium BCE manual for better living in semi arid scrubland deserve the scorn they get. Course, there is something to the whole self programming aspect of devotion to a mystical godhead, but there has got to be a better way to do it. (Tantrism springs to mind.)
