Watches!

I love watches. I've always liked watches, but never had the funds to get as many as I wanted to. I currently alternate between two reasonably inexpensive chronographs (about £100 each), a titanium Citizen and a Guess G3 Steel - they're not expensive watches but I chose them very carefully and like them both very much.

Recently I decided I wanted to get something classy but quite different that would really make a statement... I stumbled onto 24-hour watches when someone mentioned them (on this forum actually) and I've been intrigued since. I even put a bid down on a Raketa (Russian-made, hand-wound 24-hour watch) but changed my mind soon after and decided to get something more reliable with 12 on top.

Long story short - I ordered a Utinam Orbis 24H a few minutes ago. I have just bought the coolest watch ever!

This one has the 12 at the top, and also has a little hour hand displaying standard 12 hour time (I might have that removed by my watchmaker). I can't wait to get my hands on it!

So what cool watch(es) do you own / wear? Pics please!

That would confuse the hell out of me...

I buy cheap watches and wear them til the batteries die. So far, I have about 6 like that, so I use my cellphone for time telling.

Haven't worn a watch in 20 years.

Don't miss them either.

Timex Expedition. I don't wear it too often, but its a very durable watch. Served me well while backpacking, thats for sure.

I wear a Vestal Motorhead in stainless steel. This thing is a solid beast...took me a while to get used to, now that my proprioception has adjusted, I don't even feel it, and feel naked and unbalanced without it.

I'm not sure I understand the point of the 24 hour watch. are you in the military, allaboutmusic?

BadNick 10-25-2007 05:06 PM

Even as I get older and older, I just can't throw away some of my favorite old toys. So I still have one like this:

Otherwise, while I can appreciate the art and craftsmanship in some watches, I am not attracted to owning an expensive or fine watch, so I use my cellphone or whatever clock happens to be close, or usually I don't care what time it is.

I don't wear em either, I always seemed to scratch the crystals at work. No jewelry either....

I do have 2 vintage watches I inherited from my grandfather, a 5 star Longines Admiral, solid gold case of course, & an AquaStar Geneve divewatch. They're probably worth a fair bit, but I'd never sell em.....:)

I'm not in the military, I just thought it would be a something a little different to the norm and a cool little conversation piece. :) I'd rather make a statement by having an interesting watch than one that's blinged out.

Bond wears Seamaster.

Glory's Sun 10-25-2007 07:07 PM

I just got into watches a year or so ago. I have several different ones including gucci etc. My favorite that I own right now is my Tag Carrera:

The one I really want is the Monaco, but at a $2,500 price tag.. I just like my money too much to spend that on a watch.

Willravel 10-25-2007 07:12 PM

Edit: Ever get distracted when editing and forget about it?

Ambassador isn't a type of watch. It's the campaign that Omega has for the celebs that wear their watches. I think mine is worn by a swimmer, but I can't really remember. James Bonds normally wear the Seamaster (Seamaster Professional 300 M for Casino Royale). Mine is also a Seamaster (according to the gift giver), but when I look on the website, it looks like it's closer to the model called "Apnea", only with a black leather bracelet, as opposed to the Professional 300 M.

LoganSnake 10-25-2007 07:14 PM

Oh, wait. You were serious.

I'm currently looking at some skeleton watches. The more I look, the more I like them.

EDIT: will, your reply disappeared. :orly:

i have a festina, cause i cycle and they are the official time keepers of the tour de france, i have two pocket watches, cause i like the chain and the pocket watch "thing" but i usually wear my $20 casio.

and have my darth maul watch from burger king.

inBOIL 10-26-2007 11:08 AM

I've never been a fan of jewelry or flashy clothing, so when I buy a watch my considerations are simplicity (no winding), durability, and reasonable accuracy. It's nice if it has a timer/alarm function. I usually get a cheap timex or casio, but since my last watch broke I've been using my cell phone.

Skagen Designs makes incredibly durable, yet elegant women's watches. I've had my Skagen for a year and have put it through HELL. It's the ultimate in a basic watch that can handle a beating. It also happens to fit on my wrist, which is somehow incredibly difficult to find. It's been through dives, snorkeling, insane hikes, washing machines & dryers. It has been covered in salt water, stream water, rain, sweat, DEET, sunscreen... Not a hint of rust or wear.

I've never been so happy with a watch.

little more pricey then I would normally buy but it's an eco-drive watch meaning no battery - charges up when I wear it under any form of lighting.

Quote:

It starts with a simple, yet revolutionary concept: a watch that never needs a battery. Citizen Eco-Drive technology harnesses the power of light - from any natural or artificial light source - and converts it into energy which is stored in an Eco-Drive Energy Cell. It recharges continuously in any kind of light to run foreever.

How it works... Sunlight and any artifical light are absorbed through the crystal and dial. Citizen uses special filters which allow a wide range of dial colours and styles.

A solar cell beneath the dial converts any form of light into electrical energy to power the watch. With regular exposure to light, Eco-Drive continuously recharges itself for a lifetime of use.

Eco-Drive's revolutionary Eco-Drive Energy Cell stores enough energy to power the watch up to an astonishing 5-years (depending on model) even in the dark.

true, but since most people have no idea how to tell time that way, you'd have to explain it, which defeats your purpose.

desal75 11-05-2007 12:59 PM

For my 30th birthday last February my wife bought me a Rolex Oyster Perpetual DateJust.

I love it, it is very understated and classy with a dark blue face and the rest in brushed steel.

MexicanOnABike 11-05-2007 12:59 PM

really? in canada, it's EXTEMELY popular. anyone who's french knows how to tell time this way. it's how they say it on tv. next show is at 22hr. news at 23. etc.. if i had seen one watch like this, i'd definitely buy one but now i have 2 working and 1 with no batteries so i'll wait till it's a necessity.

plus, anyone who can't figure out IF # > 12 then # - 12 + PM is not too bright.

bobby 11-06-2007 07:11 AM

..........paid $5.00.....lists at $1,695.00 !!!....had it authenticated,what a deal!

wow bobby, that's a bargain!

here's mine. I really like some of the brand name watches I see, but there's something about the character of a handmade watch...

newtx 11-07-2007 01:09 PM

For durability and long life you can't beat a Casio G shock. Even the batteries in them last longer than expected. Try one. They are almost industructable.
